The fact that this and Stand For Myself (which are at opposite end of the spectrum in every way) bookend the playlist is not entirely intentional, and given a comment above that proves speak-sing songs are poalrizing, I don't think this was too much of a surprise as the most divisive song of the rankdown. gonecountry becomes the first participant to lose his #1. ccarter1023 almost joined him by losing #2, while 🌺CountryLineDancer and tim both almost lose a top 5. On the contrary, a bottom 5 for 4 participants ran like a horse. Personally, it may be better to listen this song with the intended instrumental intro (El Comienzo del Viaje, The Beginning of the Journey), but I accept there are people that will never like Aaron Watson's singing voice, which sounds too much like talking at points. Completely agree with everything you said. I do think the instrumental intro makes a strong song even better. Aaron is clearly not everyone's taste.

I felt like "Dark Horse" was a pretty catchy song, but Aaron Watson's vocals just didn't sound very natural to me? His delivery of the chorus struck me as sounding really mechanical or something. Not in an auto-tune sense, just in the sense that the melody didn't really have a natural flow to the delivery. Kinda like riding a mechanical bull only gives you an approximation of the real thing. I felt like this was a song with a lot of potential though!

I saw some outlets like SCM and Spectrum Pulse promoted Calico Jim by Pony Bradshaw last year and thought there are some remarkable songs. For the album, it's interesting in the sense that it's set in North Georgia rather than usual rural places in country music, and for Guru, the belting at the end is shocking and powerful. It’s a well pay-off of a psychedelic trip (I think?) described in the song. It depends on whether you like the slightly long-winded melody to that climax though. Surprised .indulgecountry ranked this higher than me as both lose a top 10. 🌺CountryLineDancer and tim lose a bottom 5.

Sierra Ferrell is from West Virginia who first went viral with videos on GemsOnVHS and Western AF Youtube channels before having a breakthrough (reviewed by Pitchfork) after releasing the album Long Time Coming last year. It's a mostly traditional album but drawn from many influences. I picked Far Away Across The Sea because I enjoyed the wesern spaghetti and a hint of flamenco rhythm. It's a fresher take than some strictly revivalist albums. And I see some of you enjoyed it as fearlessarrow and 🌺CountryLineDancer lose a top 10, although ccarter1023 loses a bottom 5. The movement of this song fluctuates and in the end the song has to settle in the middle of the movements.

I don't think the quality of Pain Pills and Mama I Tried from Volume 1 differed so much, so I'm a bit sad that this song from her first album American Middle Class ended up so much lower than the other one in respective rankdowns. I enjoy her observations on the cruelty from pain killers abuse in rural area, particularly the second verse where a man would go to his uncle's home to steal pain pills instead of grieving. Perhaps the rough production and obvious Chris Stapleton background vocals don't help? 🌺CountryLineDancer surprisingly ranked this in his top 10. fearlessarrow diverged from him and loses a bottom 5 instead.

Front Porch is yet another album that is in Rolling Stone's year-end country list. I'm definitely not familiar with the works by The Civil Wars (I think I have only listened to Safe and Sound before and I don't even listen to that song much). I suppose the woman from the duo would perform better here than the man (John Paul White) if I put one of his songs her as well? Anyway I like this album opener, and ICYMI it's co-written by Caitlyn Smith (which should sound obvious after knowing the fact). One of gonecountry's favorite discoveries is gone as he loses a top 3, while bboat11 just loses a top 10.

The pipes of Tami Neilson are something else. She lets them all out in You Were Mine, a howl of a lost love. I never see these kinds of songs perform well in rankdowns. The supporters ( Sambalada, .indulgecountry and ccarter1023 who lose a top 5) did their best to help the song to escape bottom 10, but the majorly middle to lower ranks don't help the song to go far. 🌺CountryLineDancer got a perfect ranking.

There was some weird effect on Angaleena Presley's vocals that prevented me from enjoying the song more. It almost sounds tinny.
Now the Sierra Ferrell song I enjoyed a lot, loved the flamenco influences.

Joshua Ray Walker has been a Rolling Stone's favorite for a while now since his well-perceived album Trilogy, with Voices being the opener of the second album Glad You Made It and is viewed by many one of the best country songs in 2020. It's about questioning one's faith and contemplates suicide. The hold of the high notes in 2:56~3:05 is strong and complements the question "How long are you going to make me wait?" in the lyrics. However I am not surprised it made the song divisive. It was around top 10 until fearlessarrow's last place came in and the low ranks that follow. The high ranks from bboat11 and Sambalada brought it closer to top half.

The close harmony female duo is out next with their song Cabin, from the Brandi Carlile-produced album Saturn Return. This isn't even the only song about sexual harassment in the rankdown. Obviously I enjoy what they excel at--the vocal harmonies. I feel like Brandi Carlile is ghosting in every song of this album though. That small range of the ranks (with no bottom 10 ranks included) aside from bboat11's top 5 though. Truly an abnormality in this chaotic rankdown.

Luke Bell made a decent noise when he released his self-titled traditional country album in 2016. The sound is gradually coming back in mainstream but I still think richer sounding traditional country instruments (fiddle and steel guitar) come from indie side. It unfortunately got the same weak spot as similar releases in terms of simplistic lyrics, and considering he didn't release original music afterwards, the title takes on a whole new meaning. 🌺CountryLineDancer lose a top 2 while gonecountry and bboat11 lose a top 10.

An acoustic country ballad, William and Wanda tells a story of the wife fussing at her husband for being late to heaven, which is inspired by the death of Cody Jinks' grandfather. It's a touching story even though some of the elements feel familiar (It's essentially a reverse of Waitin' On A Woman, and the line "I've been running late since 1953" reminds me of the opening lyric of Slow Burn.) 🌺CountryLineDancer and gonecountry lose a top 5. fearlessarrow got a perfect ranking. It was close to top 10 at several points but finally missed top half.

In a first glance Dust in a Baggie is a good but not great bluegrass song. Things change when the focus is shifted to the lyrics about meth use and the punishment for getting caught by the authorities. With that it's even closer to a traditional bluegrass song. Relevant viral video ICYMI. tim and bboat11 lose a top 10 while ccarter1023 got a perfect ranking.

Where Ya Been? has a great delivery. I really enjoyed the production.
William and Wanda is one of the best things that I liked from Cody Jinks. I couldn't really get into him due to his unique delivery, almost sounding too dark for me, but this one was pretty pleasant to listen to + I liked the lyrics.
