Actually, the original What's Poppin' peaked at 8 before the remix came out. 

No. It vaulted from #18 to #8 because the remix had a day and a half of tracking, or something like that. It was still credited to the original that week, but it definitely would not have jumped that high without the remix.

both of these top 10s were really interesting.

2012 - the entire top 8 of #1s (we are young only later), Whitney's classic, 3 Adele songs, #1 debut (which was rare) and 2 other top 10s (maybe I'm wrong, but that week was the first time that 3 songs debuted in the top 10?). Plus, 50% of the top 10 managed to be on the 2010s decade-end list.

2017 - 4 songs by A-listers entered the top 10 at the same time.

A chaotic & iconic week for the charts

That was an epic week.

Given the Katy conversation recently — it’s pretty amazing that during a week where the biggest news in music was the death of Whitney Houston and Adele sweeping the Grammys, Katy was such a surefire hitmaker that a new song from her could still overpower both of those events on the charts.

(IMHO “Part of Me” will always be her least memorable #1 — I feel like the follow up “Wide Awake” ended up as a more notable hit despite “only” hitting #2.)

2012 was way better for R&B/Hip-Hop than it was for Pop in my memory, so it's a shame nearly all of the songs in that genre were having rather bad peaks at the time.

I feel like if it was the other way around and Gangnam Style was #1 for 9 weeks (or even more) due to streaming being more accounted, i think it’s rep wouldn’t be the way it is today. People would call it overrated and be sick of it. It would’ve also probably sticked around way longer than it did at maybe the 60-80 week range. The fact that its run was based off of radio and sales alone compared to its record breaking YouTube views at the time, is the more impressive feat.

It was both, much more so than OMN, although the latter also had respectable sales and YouTube views and of course had far more airplay, so it's likely GS would have been #1 for some, but not all of the weeks OMN was #1. For me, I actually disliked both songs, so I don't really care much either.

Charts or no charts, 2004 was a better year in music than 2012. The hip hop/R&B classics of 04 definitely aged better than the pop dance hits of 12.

There are studies that show that peoples "better year for music" lies around the year it was when they were around say ages 13-15 or the early teen years
