Both Spotify and kWorb radio are at record lows. Spotify #1 below 900k and kWorb #1 below 90M aud. I don't think that's a record low. Randomly clicked a day and 12/30/21 had 884k. 1/2/22 had 839k. Probably lots more too. 895k is higher than that. And whether it's 900k or 850k is completely irrelevant in the big picture. HW had "worse" day last week too (875,909)

What song do you guys think will go top 10 first, Woman or Big Energy? (God both these songs feel so old 😭) at least "Big Energy" is actually only now becoming a hit, despite being released in September. it has just under 60 million streams on Spotify. "Woman" has been a massive hit without radio support, having accumulated 678 million streams already. 🤯 it's surging nicely on radio right now, which is finally helping it break into the Top 20/15/possibly 10 on the charts. very excited for both of these songs, though I haven't really listened to "Big Energy" since like November—it burned on me pretty fast. "Woman" has been in my heavy rotation since June though 🥴

I think Big Energy is very close to peaking, while Woman has already surpassed it on radio and has a lot of room to grow. I think Big Energy peaks in the 11-13 range, while Woman peaks in the Top 5.

Latto will release the album next week, so that might push the song into the top 10. We'll see

Holy shit the Hot 100 is boring lately. Just realized that I’ve barely been checking back here lol
It’s definitely got to be a combination of no one listening to radio anymore and streaming being extremely diverse. Nobody listens to the same music anymore, and I think it’s actually really healthy for the music industry, just sucks for us chart watchers.

woman doesn't feel big; currently under 500k on us spotify, slightly more than good 4 u. but radio does have a good history with her by now.

I guarantee you that any song in the top 10 this week will be #1 for the week of 05/14/2022.

Nobody listens to the same music anymore, and I think it’s actually really healthy for the music industry, just sucks for us chart watchers. Also no Breakout Star or hit this year. Very true. This article from 2018 is starting become even more true recently with all the major artists single releases underperforming lately www.vanityfair.com/style/2018/06/2018-year-the-pop-star-diedmeh. that article complains that Ariana Grande, "one of the most successful new gen pop starlets" has "yet to score a number-one hit" as a reason why pop stars are "dying." later that year, mere months after that article, Ariana Grande earned her first of 5 (so far) number-one hits, "thank u, next," and everyone was talking about it. a few months later, she became the first solo artist in history to hold the top three (all by herself!) on the Hot 100. last year, Olivia Rodrigo became the first artist ever to have two singles from a debut album start at number-one on the Hot 100. she also became the first artist to have her first four official singles debut in the Top 10. Lil Nas X and Doja Cat very much have been dominating the pop radio and streaming space. "That's What I Want" just returned to #1 on pop radio, while "Need To Know" and "Woman" are both in the Top 6. the three songs also boast an impressive 1.75 billion streams on Spotify combined. I think there are two things happening: "Pop stars" don't look like what they used to (sort of).
I think there's an argument to be made for Drake being the biggest pop star, then we have the likes of Doja Cat, The Weeknd, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X... artists from various ethnic backgrounds and sonic influences. Even the white pop girl of the moment Dua Lipa comes from an Albanian and Muslim background. we need to give up the idea that you need to be a Britney/Xtina/Madonna/Gaga/Katy/Taylor to be a pop star. This is not to say there weren't any non-white pop stars before, but I think a lot of people nowadays like to erase current stars just because there isn't a Madonna-inspired pop girl on the come up. People do not care about celebrities as much as they used to (and there is way too many of them--so the attention is divided further).
I think this is both a result of social media bringing celebrities closer to their audiences (which means they don't have to be EVERYWHERE to be popular and connect with people), and the barrier to entry for being a "celebrity" reaching new lows. People also have access to so much more music—they don't have to rely on what mass retail stores carry in physical copies to listen to music, or commit to buying music on iTunes to listen (which limited people to buying what they already knew). This is anecdotal, but I sure as hell don't care about celebrity gossip, seek out paparazzi photos, or really care about what my favorite musical artists do anymore. I follow a good chunk of them on social media, and that mostly covers it for me. Then I go see them live in concert if I can. I don't care if Olivia Rodrigo gets lip fillers or Lil Nas X uses poppers or Dua Lipa folds her toilet paper. But those are the types of stories that would keep "pop stars" in the headlines back in the day. Edit: sorry for the essay lmao it's nothing personal, I just had thoughts and kept writing.

Imagine if Woman becomes the next Heat Waves that would be tragic because there’s no line that’s both iconic and an irony like ‘late nights in the middle of june’ despite it hitting #1 in March.

THIS IS GOING AGAINST THE PLAN

WHATEVER. We will come back STRONGER. YOU'LL SEE
WE WON'T GIVE UPABCDEF pop radio, it's all their fault~ Got three weeks at #1 there at least, but its callout isn't great so pop is dropping it pretty quick. #1 at Hot AC is still on the table but that can't make up the difference in audience lost at pop. So here we are.

Because I promise you there are still millions of 14 year olds that do still care about what their favorite artists are doing, what they're wearing, where they're eating, who they're dating. You are able to curate that out of your social media experience because you don't care about it. But it definitely still exists

Maybe, but I do wonder if it might be because today’s pop stars put more out there for fans via social media to appease that need of knowing more about them. Back in the 2000s, pop stars attempted to be more private (deservingly so) and ‘normal’ in a lot of ways. One of the things I noticed after Gaga’s emergence was how she embraced the whole “pop star ideal” by basically always being “on” and outrageous. Paparazzi and other vultures never caught her in an embarrassing moment because she never let it happen. If she was in public, she was doing her thing and it seemed to have caught on to some degree. Of course there have been incidences like donutgate and whatnot (plus people’s ability to dig into a star’s past through social media - Camila) but I’d say pop stars probably having to make their personal lives public has become more of a necessity to feed the beast so they can have some ounce of privacy and normalcy beyond. People are still obsessed.

For people that lived through the 2000s, pop stars were huge. Britney, Christina and then Beyoncé, Gaga... Before that we had Michael, Madonna, Janet... they were HUGE. I don't think we can even compare Dua Lipa or Olivia Rodrigo or any current artist to how big the acts were, and it's not a matter of ethnicity. People nowaday complain that award shows are boring, but I think it's actually a reflection of how aloof the audience is to today's "stars." Would you be counting down the days to watch a Billie Eilish or Olivia Rodrigo performance the way people did for a Gaga/Beyoncé/Britney performance? Some people might say we're just old and nostalgic, but if you take a look around, not even teenagers care as much about these current "pop stars" as they do for the likes of Kylie Jenner or Charli D'Amelio.

But then I wonder, barring any sort of illegal or immoral activity, I’m not sure what could be dug up about Gaga that would be particularly interesting since she’s already put anything and everything out there before. Maybe “normal” Gaga isn’t interesting enough for ‘reporters’ to stalk her for. I’m not sure. Maybe people truly don’t care about celebrities personal lives as much as they used to. One can hope I suppose.

One can hope I suppose. She's also not exactly at peak celebrity anymore, at least compared to her cultural dominance in in 2009/10. If people didn't care about celebrity's personal lives, they wouldn't have millions of followers on instagram/twitter. The difference is that celebrities now manage the image of their personal lives much more tightly than in the past. Also, laws have changed in California that prevent the type of paparazzi mobbing that we had with the girls in the early 2000s.

Hey, phieaglesfan712. Guess what song Marvel used as the theme for their new superhero show's trailer? Might be the boost needed to get Blinding Lights the one final week needed on the UWC to become the #1 song ever on that chart as well.

Sweetest Pie's Spotify streams are up today (660k vs 600k yesterday). Maybe stabilizing a bit? I could see it sticking around the Spotify top 10 for a few weeks.
It probably needs to stay at this level through the week to get top 10 on the Hot 100, unless it's pulling some crazy Sales numbers.
