Better than Cry Pretty (that's not saying a whole bunch), but would have been one of the more forgettable album tracks buried somewhere at the end of Blown Away.
If this is her big ace card to try and re-establish her dominance on radio at a critical time for her, I'm not quite sure what her people are thinking.

The song is kinda just there for me. I like the production and her voice however the song doesn't go anywhere. And it ended rather abruptly for my tastes.

I like it well enough, even though it does feel a little bit rushed. But I agree with the general sentiment that it's a nice album track, not single material.

This will probably sound fine on the radio, but there just isn't anything special about it. Carrie should be at a place in her career where she can take more risks. Maybe this is just a way to get her back on radio with a solo song, and the second single will be special.

Although I prefer Cry Pretty, I think this is more accessible for Country radio and won't be as polarizing to listeners. We'll see what happens.

The clip sounded more promising than the actual song is, I didnāt expect the verses to be so slow. This isnāt really that great, or lead worthy. It sounds like a Christian radio song to me.

I'm not feeling it much after one listen. The song just isn't interesting enough. Strange they didn't go with something more immediate or... adventurous for a lead single.

I would say thatās an accurate statement but then again I donāt really listen to country radio. I love this one. Itās a total ear worm.

I adore this song. I canāt get the chorus out of my head no matter how hard I try. While this doesnāt reinvent the wheel or anything, and is certainly an underwhelming choice, at least technically, as the lead single off her first regular country album in four years, I think the fact that the chorus is stuck in my head (even taking the stan glasses off lol) is a rather good sign. Not to mention her massive rebound in momentum after IIDLY, and the fact that the production honestly sounds like itās suited for the summer months (it was 70 degrees here and sunny yesterday and this song HIT in my car as I was driving around). I honestly foresee this being another #1 for her considering all those factors, and Iāll bet this is just to get her solo song back on the radio with force anyways. Iāll bet itās the next single that has the sharper teeth.

I actually really enjoy this but not so much as a lead single. I just feel like the quality of her singles continues to decline.
Iām sure it will grow on me quite a bit over time though.

Not great. Inoffensive and melodic enough but I thought I read this was written or produced by the people who did "Blown Away" and this is not that. Also her voice sounds so weird on that one prechorus (catchiest part tho) when she gets to the low notes: "down the steeehs...no one even theeeh"; seems very affected for some emotional resonance that doesn't happen. She should have just used her full voice because her lower register at the end of the bridge is so powerful, and the best part of the song.
Production sounds like a Piece By Piece reject and there were already some rejects that made that album.

I just hope this will smash at country radio, or at least make top 10. I miss the Carrie pre-Cry Pretty tbh. Iām not totally sure that the move to Capitol was in her best interest. I will say that the chorus is super catchy, as it has been in my head all morning.

I like the lyrics and her vocal, but her production is so tired. I donāt understand why theyāre sticking with this style when Cry Pretty fell flat.

I like this song, both melodically and lyrically. Sure, not her best work or any, but I think it is a solid lead single, and makes me feel even more excited for her new era.

Iām very underwhelmed by this initially. It sounds like album filler, not lead single material. Iām sure it will grow on me with time though.

This sounds very CCM to me and now thinking about it, several of her tracks/singles have has this strong Christian feel to them. This isnāt bad but I hope she doesnāt stay in this direction or Iāll start to think sheās hoping to transition to CCM after her country radio career is over (ala Gary Levox and Racal Flatts lol). Iām definitely over reaching tho but confused as to why they chose this as a comeback single unless Country is allowing more CCM sounding singles (I feel the same CCM vibe from that Restless Road song)

Chorus was in my head after a single listen. Good to hear her on a pop country song again. Looking forward to the full album!

Didn't want to finish the song. That shrill voice she does doesn't sound that good to me.

Iām happy with this foray back into country pop. Her collars and passion projects were very fun to watch ā and how lucky of her that she saw so much success out of a more traditional-leaning Christmas record and another of roots/gospel hymns ā but itās nice to have her back in her wheelhouse as a solo artist.
I donāt think itās her strongest lead single, but I donāt place it at the bottom of the pack for me. Itās got a great chorus, and I personally enjoy the production on it. She just set the bar too high for herself on lead singles when she gifted us with āCowboy Casanovaā š„²

After one listen, I agree with most others that this doesn't feel like a lead single. In fact her vocals were really grating for me. I became a really big fan during the Blown Away era and sadly, nothing since has clicked for me.

This is ear candy with a catchy hook (to me) and I especially love her lower register on the bridge. I never play Cry Pretty (the song) but Iāll be keeping this one in rotation. I also donāt listen to country radio so Iām glad I can enjoy the music purely for what it is and without all these expectations. š„“

But for me I feel similar to how I feel with Marens lead. Itās ok on the album but when you return from such a long layoff I want THAT SONG.

I do wonder if she had better choices on the album itself, but I think it's a better pick as a lead single than "Cry Pretty". I do wonder if it's strong enough of a song (as in people would like it) to carry her back to the top and not falter on the charts like "Love Wins" or "Drinking Alone" did. This kind of does remind me of "Love Wins" at points though... I'm feeling a little lukewarm towards it at the moment but maybe it'll be a grower.

I would say I feel the same as a lot of the others here. Better than āCry Prettyā imo, but not up to par with what I would expect from her. Cry Pretty (the album) was my least favorite Carrie album, and I think a lot of it had to do with Davidās production. They did a stellar job on the gospel record and there are a few gems on Cry Pretty but, itās been hit and miss.
āGhost Storyā didnāt hit me in the same way I had hoped, but based on the preview I was expecting something similar to BA.

Why do I feel like this is a gospel song that has the words "bar" and "whiskey?" Carrie, let's call this a promo single and release the REAL first single in April.

Don't love it. I think the biggest problem for me is the production on the chorus--it just feels very basic and kind of CCM as others have said. I actually quite like the verses and bridge on first listen; I think she made some interesting (in a good way) choices vocally. The chorus seems catchy enough, but there's something off. The production is the biggest offender, but even aside from that, I'm not sure the chorus is on the same level as the verses/bridge for me.

I think it's a great choice as a lead. I'm not to keen on the song just yet but i think it's perfect for the general public and country radio. She's not doing too much with the vocals, it's not too dramatic as "Cry Pretty", it's soft, enjoyable and i think people will appreciate that.

As someone who really didn't care much for hardly anything on "Cry Pretty" the album, I'm liking this much more than almost everything on there (save the masterpiece that is "Low"). Lyrically it's a more interesting way to discuss a breakup, which I love, Carrie does sound great. My biggest gripe with this, like many have said, is the production. There easily could at least be some fiddle or steel guitar added in here to make it sound more country. I'll co-sign dropping Garcia as a producer. I feel like that's why I didn't love most of CP. Production wise, Storyteller was great (despite song-wise it not being one of my favorites of hers) so I hope we hear more production like that on the album. I feel like she's really given up on any of her music sounding very country, which is disappointing. But song-wise, this is miles better than "Cry Pretty" "Love Wins" and "Southbound", and I may even like it more than "Drinking Alone".
