its mindboggling to think it was a mere 613 weeks ago (roughly) that 21 came out. 714 to be precise, it's craaazy.

A week later, I find myself replaying "Crush" and "Lifetimes" the most.

I’m not surprised Katy has been focusing her promo these past two weeks in Brazil and Australia. It’s obvious that she is still huge in both of those countries. I’m looking forward to her announcing more tour dates soon.

I agree with this tweet in a general sense. Most pop stars who can get beyond one-hit wonder or one-album wonder get about ten years of radio good graces. It takes reinvention, work, and better A&R sensibilities than Katy has shown to keep going beyond that. NRO is an example of making the correct single choice and then messing things up after that. If only she'd released HIH instead of ST...

also, two months until 400 weeks on the Billboard 200, fifth female album to reach 400: 1.Adele - 21 (613 weeks) |#188 this week| 2.Lana Del Rey - Born To Die (555 weeks) |#82 this week| 3.Taylor Swift - 1989 (510 weeks) |#185 this week| 4.Rihanna - ANTI (439 weeks) |#93 this week| 5.Katy Perry - Teenage Dream (392 weeks) |#95 this week| Sadly 1989 is about to die to the Taylor Version... it has already skipped a week on the chart IIRC. ANTI is so impressive but the real GOAT is Born to Die which had zero major hits aside from a remix not included on the album and is outcharting the rest of the list. The rest are kinda expected since the hits are so huge and they all had many so streaming will keep them alive. I still think Teenage Dream being called a low seller compared to the hits back in the day was an over-reaction. It was the very early start of the transition towards this SPS era and it has more than made that up with the legs of the singles. I'm really not gonna be shocked if it already outcharts 143 this week.

If only she'd released HIH instead of ST... I agree with everything you said. I feel like even if the correct choices were made in Katy’s career in the 2017-2020 timespan, she would’ve seen the inevitable diminishing returns in the late-2010s. But I believe it would’ve been more gradual instead of the steep drop off in 2017. The 10 year average lifespan in pop music/pop radio is pretty normal. I’ve always seen Gaga and Katy’s careers as parallels for many years but around that 10 year mark, their careers went in different directions. While Gaga was making more correct choices in the 2017-2020 timespan, Katy was making more wrong choices. Granted, Gaga has seen diminished returns compared to her heyday, but she still gets respectable peaks on radio and streaming (and currently has a big hit charting). If Katy made better decisions during the Witness and Smile eras, I feel like she’d be in a better position than she is now. CTTR and NRO were both great choices but both were followed up by momentum killers which resulted in album release weeks with no big or moderate hit charting at that moment. Also, the album aesthetics didn’t help either.

I think at some point most pop stars fade out of the A-List upper echelons and need to pivot to critically acclaimed work that sustains a fanbase even without the general pop culture viral hits. I think Witness was just a regurgitation of bad songs, but Smile had some moments there where she could have built something like Carly Rae or even what Charli had pre-BRAT: pop gems that keep you in the conversation even without the charts. I think CTTR, NRO and HIH are gems, and there were sparks on several Smile tracks like CAIL. It's why 143 had so much hype initially: it could have been a career pivot if it had been good, even if it ultimately pulled similar numbers.
Also Katy didn't move on from the old pre-streaming model and took a huge ass break between each and every album. The end of her mainstream A-List days can be traced back to several singles from PRISM straight up not connecting in spite of getting boosted by two Diamond #1 hits, but the real deal-breaker was that huge ass break between it and "Rise"/CTTR. People have shorter attention spans these days. Like, even Adele tried to do business as usual for 30 and it still was a significant decrease from 25 (which was probably unavoidable anyways).

Do we know if there are any Katy songs / hits where she was the only writer? I’ve always attributed her to being a writer but I’m curious how significant her pen is . I always felt her ability to write books balances not having top tier vocals

But it’s always hard to know how much these artists write when there’s a bazillion contributors. Writing is a hard thing to fall back on for your continued mainstream success, unless you have the musical knack for writing hit melodies and hooks.

Even with the reception, it's so odd she is so mum on US dates and the entirety of the tour here. It's like she dropped 143 and vanished. lol

I know she wrote Thinking of You, that's probably the biggest song she solo wrote.

Ugh. Is everyone already back to supporting Belenciaga after their literal pedo/satanic spreads? That company is bad news.

Here's a list of songs where she was the sole writer or only has one co-writer. Co-writer is in parenthesis
Use Your Love (John Spinks) One of the Boys Thinking of You Mannequin Ur So Gay (Greg Wells) Lost (Ted Bruner) I'm Still Breathing (Dave Stewart of Eurythmics) Fingerprints (Greg Wells) Not Like The Movies (Greg Wells) By The Grace of God (Greg Wells) I Woke Up (Gamal Lewis)

I don't think 'Use Your Love' should count? If I understand correctly from Googling, she may have a writing credit on her version for some gender-swapping tweaks to the lyrics but overall since it's a cover she didn't write it.

By The Grace Of God is my favorite Katy ballad by far. This is probably the most vulnerable Katy has ever been in her songwriting.
