but Katy isn't being targeted here. I completely disagree. I’ve seen multiple people wish physical and mental harm on Katy for this whole Dr. Luke saga. Wishing she’d have a breakdown. And don’t even get me started with ATRL. Some people want her to kill herself as if that would validate them. It’s sick. In no way, shape or form is this just about Woman’s World.

I would understand the complaints of Katy being "mistreated" or being unjustly "hated on" if she did nothing wrong and just released a subpar album, but that's not what happened. She is largely responsible for spearheading her own public backlash by her tone-deaf actions, choices, and decisions. I don't even feel as if the general reaction has been so horrible to warrant all the defensiveness I've seen on her behalf. I've only seen Katy Kats defend her and not hold her accountable for anything (not referencing anyone on this forum or this forum itself in particular btw). It's not as if she's being crucified all across social media for her exsistence as the likes of Jennifer Lopez has been or as many other celebrities even unjustly have been in the past. At least the main criticism I've seen of her is of her music and her actions not on Katy herself as a person. With that said, she's doing fine. She's been enjoying her time in Brazil with a crowd who all sang loudly and proudly back to her and for the most part (exception of the VMAS) appears fairly unbothered, so hopefully she takes it all in stride and just chooses better for herself going forward. This time will pass and the public will move on and she's gonna return with hopefully a much better album and if anything she'll be stronger from all this. I think Smile was a good album. Most just wrote it off before giving it a chance, because of that crappy clown vibe she tried. This this this. Smile is a good album that was unfortunately overlooked and for one of the reasons you listed: that cringy aesthetic. I wish she would have continued that 70s/hippy aesthetic vibe she had in the "Never Really Over" video. I'll never forgive her label for not launching a campaign once they saw the success brewing for that perfect pop song. It was SUCH a missed opportunity. Instead they pussyfooted around and we got "droplets" here and there. :/ Imagine if they had followed "NRO" directly with "Harleys In Hawaii" and "Cry About It Later"? We would be in an entirely different space rn.

But nobody pretending it's bad cause of hate trainz it's just kinda not good? I think two things can be true. People generally don't like the album, but they also are being harsher to it than they would another album they thought was boring and a snooze. As said, plenty of late-career veterans have released mediocre, bland albums like this littered with just so much boring/unremarkable songs. Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Madonna, Shania Twain, Ciara, Alicia, etc last albums no?.. They didn't get as much outward panning from critics/reviews and casual listeners though. It's kind of understood with them you're not getting a prime album anymore and to not have similar expectations as you would in 2004, the current output is for the die-hard fans + its generally nice to see they even still continue to make music.

Listening to the new Jamie XX album and imagining Katy making dance pop that sounded THIS good. My guess is that she will pivot to a different sound entirely after this album. It kinda sounded like something she needed to get out of her system, like after having her daughter, she wanted to blast a few Skinnygirl Cosmos and dance on tables and shake her tits and toss her hair around. She even kinda hinted at that in the Zane Lowe interview. Kind of a shame though because even Calvin Harris is a good fit and they made a great song together, even though all she did was play hook ho.

Kind of a shame though because even Calvin Harris is a good fit and they made a great song together, even though all she did was play hook ho. She did say she has always wanted to make a dance and acoustic album in her career so it likely was a check off her list! I am intrigued by the idea of an acoustic album and if anything this all takes the pressure off of her having to commercially "perform" which opens the door to having the freedom to be more creative and hopefully she'll go that route in a really cool way and surprise everyone. I think vocally she'd sound fantastic on an acoustic album as I remember really liking her performances on Unplugged back in the day. Random but I LOVE stuff like this lol: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DAOkAE6OymA

why are we doing the "katy deserves some hate for working with dr luke" debate again? Almost nobody in this thread disagrees that she screwed up massively by working with him & by doubling down on that fact.
Either way, it's not relevant to my point: most people already made their minds up on the album & this era before listening to it. I fully acknowledge *why* that is.

I forgot to check which song was co-written by Lu Kala until now and the answer is Artificial.
That is not what I would personally pick from this album as "one of [Katy's] biggest songs ever."

"Artificial" is the song Katy infamously said would be "one of the biggest hit songs that hasn't been released"? lol What is she hearing in "Artificial" that we're not? lol I was always curious about what song she was referring to!

I see the potential, and JID is good juju. But they need to ACTUALLY send something for starters lol. It reminds me of a ET/Dark Horse mix. (I think sis was just hyping Lu Kala up, which she should.)

^ I don't hear the biggest hit of her career necessarily, but "Artificial" along with "All The Love" has joined "I'm His, He's Mine" and "Gorgeous" as the best of the album for me! I bet "All The Love" would be absolutely gorgeous stripped down into an acoustic setting. I hope she does a performance like it this era.

I’ve got to admit - I’m actually quite enjoying this.
CRUSH, NIRVANA, IHHM, LIFETIMES, ALL THE LOVE are all on repeat for me. The album is not nearly as bad as everyone is saying, it’s just meh.

I wonder if the touring plans are also being redone considering the commercial decline of the record, maybe they are targeting arenas only. Usually artists announce tour alongside an album’s release week to maximize the sales, but this one didn’t.

I was lied to by Bing CoPilot late at night and posted right before going to bed. It looks like the Lu Kala co-write isn't on the album, so either it was scrapped or will be on the deluxe.

They'll promote it as a greatest hits something similar to what JLO did.

I wouldn’t be surprised if her Rock In Rio performance is a preview of her tour. That setlist was really good and I’d only swap out a few songs for something else.

You keep listing Kelly in this group as if she didn’t just release her most personal album with more songwriting credits than anything she’s released in over 15 years. You can find it boring of course but Kelly’s last three albums have been a full genre departure from what she’s known for, a divorce Christmas album, and a deeply personal record that defies genre beyond simply “pop.” Since joining Atlantic, just mindlessly releasing albums stuck on one’s sonic past is sort of the antithesis of what Kelly has actually done. And this board at least has pointed out how boring Pink has become with her last, like, three albums at this point. None of those have been as aggressively uninspired as this one.

That would be the most logical and redeeming thing. I think this album along with Prism, Witness, and Smile show how weak Katy is with albums. She’s more of a singles artist and when she doesn’t release the right singles it shows.

There are people who like this album. It’s a feel good upbeat collection of songs. I don’t need a personal album that’s boring af. I don’t need a song to be a hit in order to like it. 😉

🤷♂️
I raised a similar point a while ago in the WW thread and got called out for being a terrible person. It is impossible to say "I genuinely don't know" what went down between the 3 of them in the fans' world.
I will say Katy is responsible for keep entertaining this type of conversations by working with Luke, which has derailed her own album launch. Whatever her intention was, it proved to be an unwise move in 2024.

I feel bad for Katy. She broke down crying at her concert this weekend over the poor commercial performance of her new album "143"

it's not a bad album....it's just...10 years too late. If she had released this instead of Witness, things would be very different for her. She's still obviously a huge name, but her days of being the biggest pop star on the planet are behind her.
And that's fine. That's how these things go. You don't stay on top forever.
But she needs to decide what direction to take her career in now. If she wants to keep releasing music and touring, she needs to go the All The Love, Wonder, HAC mom-pop route. An album of gay club tracks isn't going to work for her anymore.

There's no way that this is the worst female album of all time. Music critics are absolute clowns. This is not "Fetch the Bolt Cutters," but it deserved to be in the 60s.

eh, i still think the direction she should go is in the Crush/365/E.T./mysterious alien-like route.
