Is it me or that snippet of “I Woke Up” sounds like “Yes, And?”; I say that in a positive way.

“I woke up… yet another day” chorus is similar to “Yes… and?”.

That song sounds cute but I’m not really a fan to justify buying the album. Hopefully she adds the deluxe to streaming eventually.

I’m sad it’s not on streaming so I can add it to my Spotify playlist but I went ahead and got the deluxe so I can have “No Tears For New Years” on my phone and the price was very cheap.

“I Woke Up” is a cute lil bop with disco vibes and fun campy lyrics. “No Tears For New Years” is still one of my favorites from this project. It’s a little less dance-y than the rest of the album (think TOTGA) and the lyrics even sorta remind me of that song and CAIL. The solo version of “Gimme Gimme” has a second verse from Katy and I have no idea why they cut it out of the original version. It would’ve helped the song sound a little more complete with the extra verse.

I checked out the deluxe tracks and thought they were decent, even though they don't really enhance the album in any significant way. "I Woke Up" is definitely very campy, but it's not bad and I'd say it's on par with the rest of the album. I found "No Tears for New Years" to be pretty cute! The chorus is an earworm and it's a lot of fun for what it is. It isn't better than anything on the album, but I'd put it towards the top of my album ranking.

The Pitchfork review is pretty harsh but fair. I appreciate the fact that they once again showed some integrity by not completely panning this album for clicks like other critics. I would still give this album somewhere around 5.5, but the Pitchfork score is not that bad considering that some haters were expecting something like 1.5-2.

That Pitchfork review has several lines that just...really nail it. Honestly based on their review, their number seems almost artificially, pityingly high.

While Perry does make implicit sense as a pop singer, describing why she was as big as she was is a challenge. As a key feature, she sometimes cites her own weirdness, as she did in the acceptance speech for her Video Vanguard Award. But Katy Perry is weird like Olive Garden is exotic: not really at all, and everything is suffocated in cheese.

But Perry could only be essentially hollow for so long—you get about three albums to say precisely nothing as a top-tier artist whose craft isn’t defined by technical virtuosity.

How little Perry has to say is stunning. Four decades of female experience (and six writers) yield generic girl-power sentiment like: “Sexy, confident/So intelligent/She is heaven-sent/So soft, so strong.” Perry sings “Woman’s World” with the deliberateness English speakers use when trying to convey something to someone who doesn’t speak the language. When she does weave evocative imagery, the vibes are off. “Say the right thing, maybe you can be/Crawlin’ on mе like a centipedе,” is supposed to be a come-on in the horny “Gimme Gimme” but yuck, who wants bugs in their bed?

Like Witness, 143 is a spectacular flop, but it’s a strange one—like one of those restaurants that looks nice and has an expensive menu but serves food so mid as to be insulting. It’s worse than awful. At least awful is something you can direct your rage at, deriving catharsis in the process. Aside from some fleeting hellacious decisions, like the jump scare of a warbling child’s voice that opens the cloying final track “Wonder,” 143 is mostly just…there.

40k units isn't too bad all things considered. I mean the press has been atrocious, yet it experienced just a small dip from her last (much better) effort which shows she still has a noteable dedicated fanbase! Pitchfork's analogy of 143 to an expensive restaurant with mediocre food is super on point as the imagery of the era is very good, Katy herself looks better than ever, just the material leaves a lot to be desired (though I am spinning 4 of the tracks!).
