The numbers are honestly as good as she could have hoped for at this point, could definitely be worse. The real question now is does it totally fall off a cliff after debut week, since I kinda can’t imagine anyone who wants this album wouldnt get it right away… Granted, I wouldn’t say I want this album, but I’ll absolutely pick up the vinyl when it’s under $10. The pressings are gorgeous!

Katy needs to scrap the deluxe, IMO. Surely it's only going to consist of more songs that were already in the can with Puke at the helm. More of the same isn't gonna salvage this album. To forge ahead would be the definition of insanity.
But then again she's just gonna barge on ahead because this whole era has shown she's lost her fucking mind lmao.

This is boring and a little embarrassing even? 'All The Love' and 'I'm His, He's Mine' are the only keepers
For her albums I would say 1. Prism 2. Teenage Dream 3. Smile 4. Witness 5. One Of The Boys 6. 143

I have never seen a pop record by a female popstar, this hated. I heard it. I don't see the nuclear disaster, its just soulless and bland. So many fanbases against her, it truly feels over for her. During the Rock in Rio performance at one point it looked like she was going to breakdown crying 😢
Anyhoo, my vinyl came and the artworks and images inside are really really pretty

I blasted this album in my car on a trip yesterday. Even the songs I don’t care for I was bopping to. These type of songs are my thing anyway, but even taking that into consideration, this album is not THAT bad imo.

Is it predicted to debut top 10 in the UK or do we know yet and what are her previous album stats there if anyone has them? we don't know yet, in the next few hours maybe. One of the Boys #11, currently 2x platinum, it has 720k overall Teenage Dream #1 54.2k, 6x platinum (1.8M sales) - 19th biggest album of the decade Prism #1 (can't find the first week sales, but it had 12k more than the #2) around 500k overall, Platinum Witness #6 16.2k, 80-90k overall, certified Silver Smile #5 8.6k, still no Silver certification

Did anything from Madame X show up on Spotify Top 200? Or even Rebel Heart? Wasn’t the end of the world for Madonna. I know apples and oranges, but still. Maddie was 60 yo and 35 years into her career. And even that Maddam X debuted at 1. You know yourself that that was a lame comparison so why bother posting something like that

Merely pointing out that it wasn’t the be-all-end-all if Medellin didn’t chart on Spotify. The album isn’t anywhere close to being bad, it’s a terrific gym playlist. The hate, imo, is for Katy herself and people are still butt hurt over her domination a decade ago.

The outragous amount of hate for this album is why people dont take these critic websites seriously... a "generic" and "faceless" album can still be good, neither of those adjectives instantly mean a song or album is terrible. Would it be better if there was more personality on this album? Yeah, definitely, but I'm having a really hard time envisioning anyone genuinely rating this lower than a 4/10.

Well, it's different for Maddie because her main markets are physical sales and touring, which she is still doing fine during Maddam X era. Katy's peak was during the beginning of streaming era, so artists like Katy couldn't have a song that debut on Top 200 looks way worse than Maddie. Plus she doesn't have sales to back her up either. The album is predicted to sell around 40K. And it's panned by critics. Things obviously don't look good for her unless her tour does well. Sorry, i didn't mean to say bad things about Katy but since you brought up Maddam X here, i just want to make it clear that it's a completely different situation.

In perspective, those numbers for the album are ok. I don't think her label is celebrating at all-they started this era with Katy declaring the biggest song of her career was coming and echoing back to Mariah Carey and Madonna as biggest pop comebacks in history. They invested a lot into the video and radio deals. I don't think the intention was an album that opens lower than Smile. HOWEVER, adjusted expectations when it became clear Women's World was not going to take off and these numbers could be a lot worse for the cd. Like, there was a point where I thought it may not break much past 20K lol. So, she does have a consistent fanbase.

Geez, I am definitely the minority here because I really like the album! Lol I think it’s a fun collection of bops which is exactly what I am hoping for. I’m excited for a deluxe version.

I don't think you're in the minority on Pulse. It seems like there's an emerging consensus around this album being an enjoyable listen overall, with some obvious flaws (songwriting, production, single choices).

^ After compiling a list of her 30 most-streamed songs yesterday and learning this today, I am really surprised to see just how much love "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)" has received! Personally, it was one of my favorite Teenage Dream singles but I am surprised it leads all her other songs (aside from "Dark Horse") by a large margin. People are really nostalgic for that song in particular, when I thought it would be moreso "Teenage Dream" or "Firework" leading. Was particularly surprised to not see "E.T." near the top.

Ellie Goulding’s last album was pretty faceless and that one was pretty good. This is not that. The sucky thing is that this album could have been good. All the tracks have the starting points of good to great songs. I wish I liked it more but nothing is finished. “Lifelines” is a bop but it’s unfinished. I guess it works for the younger generation because many already skip a song at two minutes anyway. Maybe the problem is with me and not being the intended audience.

My problem is not at all with people who don't like EDM or this style of pop, or even with people who don't like this album in general. My problem is moreso with people trying to justify their hatred in a really weak and unconvincing way, and holding katy to standards they wouldn't be applying to other artists.

Yeah this is bland, but I mean…. Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Celine,Avril Lavigne, Alicia Keys, etc are also late career veterans releasing bland faceless stuff these days that will never compare to their prime efforts.
This isn’t some remarkable first time an artist past their prime released a bland album lmao.
Obviously it goes without saying there’s a hate train and wanting to pounce on her for viral interaction for her to attract this much outward panning. -
Also, I remember feeling this indifferent when I heard Smile for the most part too. I think the last time she really gave great songs was the 2019 droplet era with NRO/Harleys/Small Talk… I liked all of those and I think they were a way higher tier of Pop catchy than the remaining Smile album afterwards. I wonder what changed after the 2019 droplet era whether it be her, the songwriters/producers, the budget, etc that made the quality very basic since.

Avril has had so many 143 level bombs of embarrassing trend chasing or lazy remakes of old stuff that no one cares anymore. But at the start of her downward spiral she got just as much shade as Katy. Anyone remember Hello Kitty?
If that's where Katy is headed then... oof.
As for the people saying this is a 4/10 album... that's only slightly off from what the 34/100 on Metacritic averages to, so I think that's the overall consensus.

My December had a hate train, glitter had hate , Britney Jean had hate, Janet post SB and even yesterday and today has hate. Sometimes it's warranted, sometimes it's out of the blue and not warranted like JLo but Katy isn't being targeted here. Its two steps to this a) she us rightfully under attack for Woman's World and Luke and her nonchalant reaction to it and B) the material just isn't that good for anyone standards including her standards.
Look at Miss Homewrecker she got hate for stealing that dwarf with the ears but barely had success because her material wasn't great but it wasn't as bad. It happens I just wish Katy fans would stop feeling sorry for themselves, address she is in wrong and if you like album then like it. But nobody pretending it's bad cause of hate trainz it's just kinda not good?

My problem is moreso with people trying to justify their hatred in a really weak and unconvincing way, and holding katy to standards they wouldn't be applying to other artists. I think people are holding Katy to a standard she set herself, which is unfortunately the very high bar of her peak. Teenage Dream is one of the most perfect pop albums of all time. One of the Boys, while less well-regarded, is a solid pop rock record (at least imo) and Prism is a great pop album (and I have a soft spot for it personally because it came out around the time I had a my very first break up in my late teens). Now, is it fair to compare every new album an artist releases to their absolute best work? Probably not. Teenage Dream is a once-in-a-career album. But Katy has demonstrated she’s capable of better with her other albums too (I see a lot of people even ranking Smile above 143). I definitely agree the hate is overblown (even for an album I don’t like at all—it’s bad, but it’s not “worst-rated-female-album-ever” bad), but sadly the higher you climb, the harder you fall. We’ve seen it time and time again with the pop girlies, and already with Katy herself a few times.

I think Smile was a good album. Most just wrote it off before giving it a chance, because of that crappy clown vibe she tried.
