He did just answer the question - it helped EDM drops go mainstream and defined that early 2010s era of music When it inevitably becomes throwback sounds to the 10s in the 2030s we’ll be listing PRA as one of the most influential songs of that sound But even he said that there were others who did it at the time: David Guetta and Calvin Harris who blew up at around the same time not only had more credibility than LMFAO they've had more longevity and respect in actually shaping pop and EDM in the 2010s. Just because you go to number one does not mean you are at the forefront of a music revolution. No one says Desiigner is someone who influenced trap music in the 2010s despite the fact Panda was one of the first trap rap songs to go to number one or that ZAYN is important because PILLOWTALK was the first desaturated moody pop songs to go #1. Music that's influential is rarely reflected by chart success - be it music, movies, or TV - and there's 30 other electronic acts who've been more important to shaping music of the 2010s than LMFAO I'm not saying LMFAO was influential to EDM more than David Guetta or Calvin Harris (who I think would be the most influential with We Found Love), I'm just saying that Party Rock Anthem is one of the most influential songs in that sound and will be remembered. Similarly, Panda will have some legacy and influence even if Desiigner doesn't. I mean, the best example and the only one we can historically look back at is Ice Ice Baby which was an influential song even if we don't remember Vanilla Ice for anything more Vanilla Ice might be the best example — he's not influential in Rap nor is LMFAO influential in EDM, but Ice Ice Baby was similarly influential to Party Rock Anthem as the song that broke into the mainstream and some people think of as the "first" mainstream song of that genre or the mainstreaming of that genre

I wasn't trying to say Party Rock Anthem isn't remembered. Again the discussion is about being an influential acts: acts who've shaped future music, and not just acts who've had a big hit in the genre. Having one big song and then disappearing both commercially and critically means you didn't have influence. As Rose said being remembered doesn't mean you're influential, you can have a big hit but not be influential, and you can be massively influential without having a big hit because being influential is more than just breaking through on the charts. Like it's funny that you used Vanilla Ice because that actually goes against your point. Ice Baby Baby yes was the first rap song to go number one (although you are absolutely wrong in saying it's considered one of the first mainstream rap hits, there are rap hits in the 80s before Vanilla Ice that are remembered). But people don't regard as Ice Baby Baby or Vanilla Ice as being influential just because he was big. There's a reason there is and was a negative connotation towards Vanilla Ice because he was the type of rapper the hip-hop community DID NOT want being big. There were similar sentiments towards MC Hammer. And if you still don't get it, let me give an example from the 80s: prior to this year, Kate Bush's biggest hit peaked at #30 and she'd never had any of her albums hit the Top 10 or go to number one. In contrast, Mr. Mister had two of the biggest number one hits of 1986 and their album Welcome to the Real World, went platinum. Guess which one was actually influential

So basically, Queen is influential to bringing rap to mainstream, since Ice Ice Baby comes from Under Pressure.

To be influential, you have to have inspired others to either follow in those steps or change/adjust how people do things — in this case, how artists worked after that particular song or artist. Influential artists and songs can be those that started a trend or sound, like the Beatles, but not always. Joni Mitchell, who’s had maybe two? top 40 hits on the Hot 100, is very often cited as being an influence by many, many singer/songwriters that came after her. To be influential, you have to be considered a pioneer of an idea, or introduce something new or different to new audiences and future artists who are then often the ones who make use of that idea and make it big. There’s nothing about “Stay” that’s new or different. It was built to be a big hit and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But influential it is not, unless we say it influenced record labels to see value in putting more push behind singles to keep them charting longer - and even then, “Blinding Lights” did it first.

Stay is not influential, it may be huge but that doesn't mean it's influential. If you a good example of a big hit that was influential, look at Despacito. While Latin music was already popular before but it became even more popular when Despacito became a hit, it opened the door for other Latin hits to crossover to the US. The video also helped Puerto Rico's economy by giving it another tourist attraction. This is a good example of an influential hit, Stay has done none of this or anything close to this. I admit that i sounded a little too crazy saying that Stay was influential but i swear it sounded better in my head lol. It’s just really huge but it still had a huge audience behind it which was one of the main factors of it doing so well.

I don't think we've had many influential songs this decade, and it's also hard to see their influence this early, but if I had to name one it would be Blinding Lights. It started this trend of 80's sounding songs (Stay, As It Was and many others). Good 4 u could be considered influential for the small pop punk revival.

If we were to consider albums as well, one could make the argument for Tickets To My Downfall being very influential on the pop/rock scene of today, as it kickstarted Travis Barker’s prominence as a mainstream superproducer and gave multiple artists in hip-hop a shot at branching out into that sound. Plus, I don’t think Good 4 U would have been as big if that album hadn’t become such a success story. Yes, Hollywood’s Bleeding planted the seeds for this, but the rock-leaning cuts on that album were within Post Malone’s usual moody sound. TTMD was much closer to the rap-rock sound as we know it today.

some people here just can't admit being wrong 🙄
The most influential song of the decade so far is without a doubt, Circles. That's what really got the whole rock revival, distorted guitar sound going

The 80s comeback into the mainstream was majorly influenced by Dua Lipa and The Weekend. But, the sound has definitely lost it's place now seeing as Dawn FM performed poorly. Same thing could have to Dua if she doesn't switch it up enough for her next project.

"Circles" bringing back distorted guitar?? PLZZZZZZ aren't the guitar tones in "Circles" all cleans? And how many Hot 100 hit songs with real and notable guitar distortion can you name since the start of 2020? "Good 4 U", "My Ex's Best Friend" kind of...the solo in "Kings & Queens" I guess? I'm pretty sure even the one no-frills rock song of last year, "Beggin", used all cleans. That's no wave, man.

Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ Is Already a 2022 Sales and Streaming Smash — Will It Take Over Radio Too? After becoming one of June's biggest global hits thanks to its 'Stranger Things' usage, radio programmers are beginning to add "Hill" to their playlists.

06/16/2022
After the latest installment of Stranger Things’ became one of the most-streamed Netflix seasons ever, a new generation of listeners are being exposed to the sounds of the 1980s, most notably Kate Bush‘s alt-pop gem, “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God).”
Bush’s track jumped to No. 4 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, 37 years after its initial release. The single, off of Bush’s 1985 classic Hounds of Love, previously peaked at No. 30 on Nov. 30, 1985. The track’s chart explosion was mostly due to a surge in sales and streams – the song topped both Billboard’s Digital Song Sales and Streaming Songs chart this week, dated June 18 – but it has also started to gain momentum with a notable surge in radio airplay, a platform that even the most viral retro internet hits often have a difficult time crossing into.
The song posted 5.3 million in all-format radio airplay audience among reporters to Billboard‘s Radio Songs chart for June 9-15 — up 162% over the prior seven days, according to Luminate. On Billboard‘s Alternative Airplay chart — where Bush has had most of her career radio success, including a No. 1 with “Love and Anger” in 1989, and where Meg Myers’ version of “Running Up That Hill” was a 2020 No. 1 — Bush’s “Hill” debuts at No. 26 this week, marking her first hit on the listing since 1994. (When “Hill” originally hit in 1985, the chart was still three years away from its debut.) But the song is also getting increasing airplay on adult and even mainstream top 40 stations, trending to break onto Billboard‘s Adult Pop Songs listing, and perhaps Pop Songs, too, next week.
Melissa Chase, brand manager at Houston’s adult pop station KHMX, says that while the song’s recent surge in popularity is surprising, it’s not unwelcome. “One of our jobs as a pop music station is to be on the pulse of what is resonating with our audience,” Chase says. “When a song from the ‘80s comes back as a major point plot in a massive show [and] jumps back on the charts and tops the downloads and streaming charts, you have to pay attention and realize there is an appetite for this song.”
With the appetite comes the TikToks, viral tweets, and various Kate Bush memes from a younger generation who are devouring the song, some for the first time. “When I sing along to Jerry Garcia, I don’t think of the music only belonging to my parent’s generation,” Chase continues. “In the case of ‘Running Up That Hill,’ an artist’s magical power to connect across generations is a beautiful thing.”
As “Running Up That Hill” connects with a younger audience, it also causes older listeners to re-discover the track. David Corey, director of FM programming for Detroit adult pop station WDVD station says the station has been playing the track for the last two weeks, averaging about five times a day. “It sounds like it fits, even after all these years,” Corey says of the track, which is often sandwiched on the station in between the likes of Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes. “I have actually loved this song since the day came it out, and can’t believe it’s turning into a hit again.”
Not only does it sonically match some of the most popular music of the last few years’ ‘80s pop revival, but it’s a lyrically relevant song as the themes of the track could reflect the current social climate. Chase believes that the introspective lyrics about viewing a situation from another perspective is something that listeners “could all use a little more of right now.” She adds that “comfort music” has been a big trend in a post-pandemic world, where songs that might sound familiar are more popular than newer tracks. “Our research has shown an increase in ‘comfort food music’ [which are] typically older songs that are [the listener’s] favorite. On many Hot AC stations now, you’ll find more hits from Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Nelly, Usher, Kesha.”
Chase says that a track going viral in a video can make it seem familiar, even if it’s relatively unknown among its audience. “Now that’s expanded further to music that has had a nostalgic resurgence, [like songs from] viral videos, like Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams.’” (“Dreams,” one of the other major “bringback” hits of recent years, returned to the Hot 100 in 2020 for the first time since 1977, reaching No. 12, thanks to a very pure viral TikTok of user Doggface208 listening to the track while longboarding.)
Still, no matter how viral or thematically resonant the song is, radio programers could still be forgiven for being skeptical about a 37-year-old song working on the airwaves as a current in 2022. Taking the chance to give it airtime is something that Mike Kaplan, SVP of programming at New York’s WNYL ALT 92.3, said was a no-brainer as soon as it resurfaced in the public consciousness.
“We added ‘Running Up That Hill’ immediately into heavy rotation based on the Stranger Things phenomenon,” Kaplan explains, highlighting that the data spoke for itself. “The track’s No. 1 in streaming and the most Shazamed. This strong empirical evidence made the decision easy to support.”
Kaplan also thinks that nostalgia is a huge factor in why the song stuck with older audiences who might have grown up listening to the song, while the exhilarating Stranger Things scene kept new listeners on board. “Between Kate’s alternative music roots and how en vogue nostalgia is, it’s the perfect track to reflect in the moment.” (Though 92.3 would occasionally play Kate Bush on their weekly alternative segments, he says this is the first time it has been played in such a heavy rotation.)
KLLC San Francisco Music Supervisor Jayn says that this moment goes beyond chart success, and puts the power back with the listeners. “We’re singularly focused on reflecting our audience rather than just a chart, and a moment like this is a perfect chance to do precisely that,” she explains. “We’ve been playing ‘Running Up That Hill’ an average of 3 to 4 times a day, and it fits perfectly into our mix. Much the same as we played Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ when that was the zeitgeist. This is a moment we want to be part of.”
As for the future of the song, Chase explains that this could be the beginning of a Kate Bush renaissance, something that has happened to the likes of Fleetwood Mac and alternative acts that have begun to gain a wider audience in the 2020s.
“Even though Kate is a well-established musician with multiple Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations, she isn’t an artist you can buy on a t-shirt at Hot Topic or a tote bag with her picture on it at Target – but Fleetwood Mac is,” Chase says, noting that Bush might be heading to a similarly legendary status among younger generations as they begin to devour her discography. “There is a surge of excitement that so many people feel when they are among the first to discover ‘the next big thing,’ and those unfamiliar with Kate Bush’s history may be attempting to claim that.”

Seals & Crofts’ ‘Summer Breeze’ Returns to Billboard Charts After Jim Seals’ Death The duo's "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)" also makes the LyricFind Global list.
By Kevin Rutherford
06/16/2022
Following the death of Jim Seals on June 6, Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” returns to the Billboard charts, appearing at No. 10 on the LyricFind U.S. and LyricFind Global tallies dated June 18.
The LyricFind Global and LyricFind U.S. charts rank the fastest momentum-gaining tracks in lyric-search queries and usages globally and in the U.S., respectively, provided by LyricFind. The Global chart includes queries from all countries, including the U.S. The company is the world’s leader in licensed lyrics, with data provided by more than 5,000 publishers and utilized by more than 100 services, including Amazon, Pandora, Deezer, Microsoft, SoundHound and iHeartRadio.
According to LyricFind, “Summer Breeze” saw a 643% boost of lyric searches and usages in the U.S., while the song increased 647% globally, both in the tracking week of June 6-12.
Additionally, Seals & Crofts’ “We May Never Pass This Way (Again)” reached the LyricFind Global list with a 1,517% bump in global lyric searches and usages.
“Breeze” was Seals & Crofts’ first Billboard Hot 100 appearance, peaking at No. 6 on the Hot 100 dated Nov. 25, 1972. “Pass,” meanwhile, peaked at No. 21 in November 1973.
“Breeze” saw a significant boost in U.S. sales in the June 3-9 tracking period, leaping 548% to 1,800 downloads from a negligible sum the prior week, according to Luminate. As a result, the song debuted on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart dated June 18 at No. 43.
In all, the band’s catalog garnered 2.2 million official U.S. streams from June 3-9, up 25% from 1.7 million over May 27-June 2. It also moved 4,800 downloads, an 822% jump from 500.
The duo of James Seals and Darrell Crofts released full-length albums between 1969 and 2004, last reaching the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 in 1978. Seals died June 6 in Nashville after a long illness.

Kate Bush Has Oldest Song to Reach No. 1 on Streaming Songs Chart "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" is one of just two songs released before the 2010s to hit No. 1.
BY KEVIN RUTHERFORD
KKate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” reaches No. 1 on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart, leaping 6-1 on the ranking dated June 18.
In the June 3-9 tracking week, “Hill” earned 29 million official U.S. streams, according to Luminate.
It’s Bush’s first Streaming Songs No. 1, coming in her first appearance on the list, which began in 2013. The song debuted at No. 6 on the June 11 chart (17.5 million streams) following its sync in the fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, which premiered June 3.
“Hill” becomes the first song aided by scripted media such as TV or film to reach No. 1 on Streaming Songs since the 13-week reign of Encanto’s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” earlier this year. Before then, Post Malone and Swae Lee’s “Sunflower,” from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, spent three nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1, two in January 2019, and again for a week in April 2019.
But unlike the above, “Hill” wasn’t explicitly written for the media in which it was featured, instead originating in 1985 as part of Bush’s album from the same year, Hounds of Love. Its closest companion, then, might be Soko’s “We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow,” a 2014 No. 1 that surged after being used in the three-minute viral film First Kiss on YouTube; “Tomorrow” was initially released in 2012. And no song from the 1980s and before had ever reached No. 1 (one did so from the ‘90s: Mariah Carey’s perennial holiday favorite “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” a 15-week No. 1 spread out between 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022), making “Hill” the oldest song to hit No. 1 since its inception.
“Hill” isn’t the only song released in the ‘80s to reach Streaming Songs’ top 10, though. Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” peaked at No. 5 in late 2013, the four-week Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 (1987) boosted by a viral video on YouTube. Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” appeared at No. 2 for a week in June 2014, also due to attention from a viral clip online.
“Hill” is the first song to rise to its first week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs rather than debut there since “Bruno,” which also climbed to the top in its second week (Jan. 15), in its case after debuting at No. 35 Jan. 8. Each of the No. 1s between then – Harry Styles’ “As It Was,” Jack Harlow’s “First Class,” Future’s “Wait for U,” featuring Drake and Tems, and Kendrick Lamar’s “N95,” all started their runs at No. 1, many also returning to the top in subsequent weeks.
As previously reported, “Hill” concurrently reaches No. 1 on the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts, and it jumps 8-4 on the all-format Hot 100.

Kate Bush Returns to Alternative Airplay Chart After Record 28-Year Break "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" sends the artist back onto the chart for the first time since 1994.
BY KEVIN RUTHERFORD
BBy returning to Billboard‘s Alternative Airplay chart with her revitalized 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” Kate Bush sets a new record for the longest stretch for an artist between appearances in the tally’s 33-year history.
“Hill,” which debuts at No. 26 on the list dated June 18, marks Bush’s first Alternative Airplay appearance in over 28 years, dating to the Jan. 29, 1994, survey, when “Rubberband Girl” spent its 11th and final week on the chart after peaking at No. 7 a month before.
That span between entries is by far the longest in the chart’s history, exceeding the nearly 19 years between Debbie Harry‘s “Kiss It Better,” which wrapped its run in January 1990, and her featured turn on Just Loud‘s “Soul Train,” which debuted in December 2018.
As for artists, like Bush, in a lead role, the distinction until this week went to Chris Cornell, who went 16 years between the final week of “Can’t Change Me” (December 1999) and “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart” (October 2015). However, Cornell made the list multiple times in between as a member of the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave.
Similarly, just under 14 years passed between the final appearance of Eddie Vedder‘s “Hard Sun” (March 2008) and “Brother the Cloud” earlier this year, although Vedder’s solo dry spell accompanied multiple Alternative Airplay appearances with Pearl Jam.
Then there’s Sublime, for whom 13 years went by between “Doin’ Time” (December 1997) and the band’s May 2011 return with “Panic.” By then, the group was billed as Sublime With Rome, with Rome Ramirez taking over vocal and guitar duties following the death of frontman Bradley Nowell in May 1996.
Back to Bush: “Hill” is her sixth Alternative Airplay appearance dating to the chart’s September 1988 inception (after “Hill” was originally released in 1985, and nearly a decade after Bush first hit Billboard‘s charts in 1979). She boasts one No. 1, the three-week ruler “Love and Anger” in late 1989, among four top 10s.
Concurrently, “Hill” starts at No. 21 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 1.8 million audience impressions, up 294%, according to Luminate. It’s Bush’s first song to chart on the survey, which began in 2009.
The song is also bubbling under the Pop Airplay, Adult Pop Airplay, Adult Contemporary and Adult Alternative Airplay rankings, where Bush has yet to appear.
As previously reported, “Hill” leaps to No. 1 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts and rises to No. 4 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, sparked by its sync in the newly released fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things.
