love Love LOVE this article. A brilliant perspective on this amazing track. Billboard Beyonce’s ‘Break My Soul’ Whips Up a Timely Resilience Anthem With House Beats and Self-Reflection www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/beyonce-break-my-soul-review-1235103269/“The arrival of “Break My Soul” in the midst of Pride and Juneteenth celebrations taps into the ethos that has shaped dance music spaces for decades, one that channels the deepest yearning for release for the Black and queer communities that have historically escaped to the clubs to untangle themselves from the burdens of a world in crisis. In 2022, though, something as simple as gathering to dance and hear music now comes with its own pandemic-related risks. Mmmm this song here cries for being a commercial hit as it is definitely not something for critics, but unfortunately it will not be an hit for pop and surprisingly Urban as well. I think Beyonce would love to release something fresh and exciting, somehow this song here is not that, which means she might be losing the touch...

Billed first, sure, but let's not forget Savage which hit #6 in July 2020.

This is very fitting and ready for Pop Radio.

She also had an uncredited feature in Coldplay’s Hymn for the Weekend (#15 in 2016), and her remix contributed to the pop airplay of J Balvin & Willy William’s Mi Gente (#16 in 2017)

It's cute and fun. With some production and vocal tweeks I feel like it could have been more. I was really wanting her to take it there vocally, but she never does. And I feel like the choir is majorly underutilized. Right off the bat, this sounds like a song I'll enjoy more in context of the album. Also, the single cover is fantastic. Agree on the vocals. There’s a moment towards the end where she goes for it with an EVERYBAAADDAAAYY and this would benefit from more of that. The ‘Show Me Love’ sample is a bit tired at this point, but enjoying this well enough. Not sure Beyoncé is an artist to be judged on a single song anymore, we need that album!

Serviced to Pop. There's not any indication that it will be sent to Rhythmic and/or Urban yet.

I’m curious how radio is gonna catch on to this. It’s her 3rd decade as a solo artist, turned 40 last year. We know it’s gonna be an uphill battle.

I can see a top 20 peak at most. It doesn't tap into current trends, the song length works against it and I can't imagine callouts being good for this either.
I'm more interested in the streaming performance. I imagine that being a struggle as well, with her ditching her base and going full-on dance.
But Beyoncé is gonna do what Beyoncé wants to do and I respect her for that.

Agree on the vocals. There’s a moment towards the end where she goes for it with an EVERYBAAADDAAAYY and this would benefit from more of that. I'm really curious as to her vocal state tbh. Her voice has obviously deepened over the years and she seems to live in her lower register these days. Like when was the last time we really heard her belting out? I wonder if she's just not comfortable in that part of her range anymore.

I feel like her vocals have gotten unpleasant or something, I can’t explain it. I don’t necessarily know if it’s really her voice or the way she chooses to sing. She pronounces words in such a harsh, bizarre way. Throws me off.
I don’t hate song, but I don’t love it either.

It seems like her voice changed after she had the twins.

This song is so damn gay lmao, I was not expecting this from her
It’s ok and I admire the risk taking (and yes this is a risk for her considering her base) but the hook isn’t as strong as it should be. Still, while she has nothing to prove I would like for her to score a global hit again and in her 40s so hope it happens.

LOL you mean the (hopefully) paid background singers? Anyway, the song is pretty mid. I would say it's her weakest lead. I'm so over the Show Me Love sample or interpolation or inspiration or whatever and the melody is lacking. I actually liked Big Freedia's sample, though. LOL @ Billboard simping like that.

I have it on repeat. The production and beat is perfect for my brisk walking work commute. Beyoncé really giving they gays what they want for Pride month. The remixes are going to be amazing and I bet it's going to sound so good in the clubs.
If this is the direction the album is going in, I cannot WAIT.

Can’t please everyone. If she did another formation style track, people would be crying for something more pop friendly like this.

I think Top 20 on Pop is within reach. Then maybe Top 20 on Rhythmic and Top 40 on Urban. She's adored there but this will probably be a lot for them to swallow.

I like the direction she went, but the production is pretty basic and her vocal isn't anything distinctive. I wish there was a killer bridge or something. It's pleasant enough, but nothing that stands out from general house music either.
To people who love it; what on this stands out from truly great hits like Show Me Love, One More Time, Where Love Lives, Pump up the Jam, or even the recent One Kiss?

While a part of me commends her for doing something different (for her), another part of me finds it all kinda generic and meh - and a "Show Me Love" sample?

I’d say it’s more that it recalls those other songs from an era long gone. I admit I tend to go more for songs that remind me of some of my favourite periods of music from years or decades ago. She doesn’t do anything really new with this but it’s a new song for the present moment pulling in old styles with a modern twist. I’d say I like this for similar reasons why I like Swish Swish and Sour Candy. At some point I might pull together a bunch of similar sounding songs from the last few years to make an epic pick-me-up playlist so all I have to say is, I hope there’s more to come!

This is the best pop girl lead single since Work. Phenomenal song, wow. She really eviscerated with this. No idea what it will do on radio though any Dua Lipa song from the past 3 years is better than this. It's got a good beat, but Beyonce sounds so lifeless in this. Literally anyone else would sound better. The direction is good tho. That's the best part. That is a take but not a good one. Dua Lipa’s music is safe and takes few risks. It’s nice to listen to but in no way doing something new or bold.

It’s weird that people are acting like she isn’t breaking new ground here at all. The blend of the Freedia and choir samples with the house sample are not something I’ve really ever heard before. There are a lot of styles coming together to form something really cool and new.
