Expected performance from Lizzo so far. Shame because Special is a good album and deserves to have more hits than About Damn Time Don't rule out the possibility of That's What I Want x Physical from becoming a hit yet.

Should we expect Steve Lacy's album to do numbers similar to Brent's (or slightly better)?

Should we expect Steve Lacy's album to do numbers similar to Brent's (or slightly better)? A very big no, mostly because he doesnt have as many songs on his album as Brent's and is doing nowhere near as good on streaming.

Lizzo's numbers are terrible. She didn't even crack 1M on Spotify! I have no clue why she can't seem to attract a consistent audience.

Lizzo's numbers are terrible. She didn't even crack 1M on Spotify! I have no clue why she can't seem to attract a consistent audience. Because people don't care for her songs beyond the ones that go viral on TikTok. That's always been the case with her music. I spoke on this weeks ago. It's the reason why despite having multiple songs off her last album that were radio/chart ready, they all flopped and her older songs (which went viral on TikTok) were the ones that did well. Same thing is happening now. Only difference is that this time around, it's a newer song that went viral but unless she can get yet another song of hers to go viral, she won't be getting any other hits off her latest album.

Look, while I still think About Damn Time's gonna be number one this week, these first-day streaming numbers have shown it will have more to do with As It Was' continued losses and the airplay not peaking than anything from an album boost reminiscent of =.

Great to see a nice boost for Lizzo from the album release. I wasn't expecting much of an album bomb, but was hoping it would do a little better. Hopefully the success of "About Damn Time" will give the next single a good shot of becoming a decent sized hit and the album some longevity. Although I'm not sure what the second single should be.

This better be the true shifting point where we stop expecting artists to always do smash numbers with their albums…

Looks like Lizzo is not going to have an album bomb as a few people predicted / hoped. She only has 3 songs on the iTunes Top 100 and so far only ADT is #28 on Apple Music. Surely Spotify will give her better numbers, but it's not looking even like a mini-bomb. It was obvious. She was very lucky to have a hit this time around. She is not an established artist / doesn't have a strong fanbase ... It wasn't obvious though. Cuz I Love You was a very strong album and era, so she was about as established as a first hit album can make you. Yes it didn't take off right away, but that's not at all uncommon for a major label debut album. If your first album starts off slow and then becomes big, it's completely reasonable to expect the sophomore effort will open big, as is usually the case. Plus ADT turned out to be a big lead single, so it's a completely realistic expectation. Of course not guaranteed though, sometimes fans don't turn out for your follow-up, as will probably be the case here, so she indeed might be a more of-the-moment, singles artist.

"ADT" hasn't been huge in streaming, though, which is a sign the album wouldn't do well there.

Of course not guaranteed though, sometimes fans don't turn out for your follow-up, as will probably be the case here, so she indeed might be a more of-the-moment, singles artist. Um, no, it wasn't? Cuz I Love You debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200 with 41,000 units. 3 songs off the original album were pushed as singles. 2 of them — Tempo & Cuz I Love You, failed to chart on the Hot 100, while Juice, peaked at #82. The two songs that did well were older Lizzo songs — Good As Hell (originally released on March 8, 2016) and Truth Hurts (originally released on September 19, 2017). They got added to the original album as part of a deluxe/super deluxe edition after going viral on TikTok and becoming chart successes. No other song off the original album came close in terms of commercial achievements. Rumors, originally the lead single off Lizzo's album, featured Cardi B and peaked at #4 on the Hot 100 but left the top 10 after a week and didn't perform as well on radio compared to Good As Hell/Truth Hurts. It eventually got scrapped and didn't make it on the album. About Damn Time debuted at #50 on the Hot 100 and didn't reach the top 10 until weeks later, after it had gone viral on TikTok. Considering the fact that all 3 of Lizzo's career hit singles so far have been attached to going viral on TikTok, it's worth saying that she isn't an established album/singles artist because her success on the charts completely hinges on whether or not she's able to get a song to go viral on TikTok.

I’m pretty sure radio will be excited to play the follow up single to “About Damn Time.” Lizzo is an A-list celebrity so she has the name recognition and multi format appeal to continue doing well with more radio hits. If anything her songs seem to be tailor made for radio/TV commercials moreso than they are for Tik Tok. I think “Am I Ready” would do well as a 2nd single on Top 40/Hot AC/AC. They should shift focus to pushing that as soon as ADT hits #1.

Kate Bush's streams have been holding up really well on spotify since the Stranger Things boost. Still doing ~1.5 million+
I hope she can continue to maintain those streams for another few weeks or so as her airplay continues to gain at a fast pace. Jack Harlow's airplay is falling quite fast now and Harry looks to finally be starting to fall with "As It Was". I assume in part due to "Late Night Talking" impacting a little bit on it as that's now top 5 on Pop radio ("As It Was" is #2). Lizzo will be #1 with the album boost/song discount giving it enough of a points increase to pass Harry.
The main question is how Beyoncé does the next few weeks. "Break My Soul" has decreased quite a bit in streaming but its airplay has been gaining extremely well. We will hopefully get a music video released soon, plus the album release boost. Those could be big enough to get it to #1 as it should have quite a lot of airplay by then, especially if the music video drops the same day as the album. It's also possible an album track gets a music video released when the album drops as well and takes off/goes viral to debut at #1. (I wouldn't be surprise if Beyoncé has music videos for the whole album ready and lined up to drop the same day the album is released).
I'm just trying my hardest to find a path for Kate to get a week at #1. Lizzo will likely have this week and next at #1. Her airplay will likely start falling next week as she appears to be peaking on Pop and will peak on HAC radio soon.
I wouldn't be surprised if Lizzo ends up being a long running #1 without anyone challenging her much due to her massive airplay/lack of big new releases though.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lizzo ends up being a long running #1 without anyone challenging her much due to her massive airplay/lack of big new releases though. I can see Lizzo getting multiple weeks at no.1. her airplay is strong enough. Her only challenge would be Beyoncé and that’s in the event that her album has a significant impact on her single.

So Ellie & Sean did not debut on the top 200? I love the song so that’s pretty much in line with where my music taste is performing with the mainstream right now lol

They got added to the original album as part of a deluxe/super deluxe edition after going viral on TikTok and become chart successes.
So, are we completely discounting viral hits as "legitimate" hits, when a very substantial portion of today's hits are due to virality, and that this in itself cannot create some degree of "establishment" or star-making clout for that artist that can lead to future demand through more traditional means? Bottom line, if a song ends up having any combination of enough sales, streaming, or airplay to do well on the charts, then it's a hit! And yes I'm aware that Truth Hurts and Good as Hell were first released a couple years before and weren't on the original version of Cuz I Love You and were later added to deluxe versions, so if you want to put that asterisk by it then go ahead, but this is why I referred to it as the Cuz I Love You "Album/Era," lumping the original album together with whatever songs were hits around that time as well (which is my understanding of what an "era" means). But at the end of the day, since Billboard/Nielsen ultimately combined the deluxe versions of the album that had TH and GAH into the same ranking for the original album, which has been done many times for other artists, we have to treat Cuz I Love You as generally a solid success.
And yes, no other songs on the album did very well (I thought I remember Juice charting a little higher than its #82 peak and being on the chart for a few months, but I guess not), but I'd imagine some of the other songs would have gotten at least some activity to keep the album afloat, as though it only debuted at #6, it eventually peaked at #4 and spent at least 15 weeks in the top ten, and ranked at #20 on Billboard's 2019 year-end as well as #41 for 2020. And aside from its commercial performance, it also received very strong reviews from most critics, and was nominated for album of the year at the Grammy's and won Best Urban Contemporary album, so it was definitely well-liked and well-received.
And yes Rumors wasn't a huge success, but of course it's not uncommon for artists to have missteps in the middle of successful runs (was this even officially announced as a "lead" single for a new album? A quick search I just did didn't reveal so, but many artists have come back from failed singles announced as "leads" as well).
Lastly, let me reiterate that I did not say it was assured Lizzo would definitely smash hard right out of the gate, just that it would not at all be unreasonable to say she could have, because she was definitely a thing in 2019-2020.

How is Lizzo an A-list celebrity? She definitely was in 2019-2020 (to argue anything other than this would be completely delusional), and About Damn Time is big now, so I would still say yes.
