I'd argue that Lizzo's problem is exactly that she's more a celebrity than an artist. It's not her fault, but that's just how I see it. Lizzo the person/celebrity attracts substantially more attention than Lizzo the artist, even if she has big songs

I wonder if Wasteland's success will give Brent a major deal. I could see him prefering to stay indie, but there's no doubt in my mind that he could become a major a-lister with the right promo. Honestly probably the strongest voice in contemporary R&B alongside SZA, Summer Walker and maybe Daniel Caesar

The former was always a streaming sleeper since like After Hours came out but now both are tik tok sounds (and just overall fan favorites in his catalog). I love seeing songs that didn’t perform well well on the hot 100, but at least have over 500M+ on Spotify, it just really shows how the Billboard charts aren’t everything to determine popularity.

If you go by the week that each chart is dated and double count songs that are number one across multiple years, then 2005 has the lowest with 8 (1958 also had 8 but it had half a year). 1996, 2002, and 2015 had 9. 1994, 1997, and 2014 had 10. 1974 and 1975 are the highest with 36 and 35 respectively, with 1988, 1989, 1986, and 1987 being the only others with 30 or more.

Average number of songs to be at number one per year in each full decade:

60s: 21
70s: 26
80s: 24
90s: 15
00s: 14
10s: 13

2020 had 22 and 2021 had 19.

Unless it's a new song by an older artist, it's not breaking any ageism barriers like they try to present with these 'records'.

I know Bad Bunny has a huge, very dedicated, audience. But those stream increases baffle me. Clearly he's not finding much new audience at this point, so it's likely the same people streaming his music more. It'd be interesting if we could identify burn rate for streaming as we do for radio. Because it seems his core fans keep loving his songs.
