This is actually the #1 song on US Spotify right now. This will definitely get some radio action due to that alone.
It's an interesting new wave throwback song, with a little bit of the stutterstep TikTok styling going on too.

This sounded more like a straight out Pop song to me with minimal 80's synth vibes. Not great, but not too terrible either. Won't care for it on Alt tho.

Feels like a combination of seaside_demo, A-O-K, and I Love You So.

Feels like a combination of seaside_demo, A-O-K, and I Love You So. Yet it’s somehow better than all of them lol.

Steve Lacy deserves a hit. I really hope this smashes.

Top 50 on AAA: 57 46 STEVE LACY Bad Habit 101 83 18 0.195 Before alt? Alt has a higher barrier for entry right now. #50 is what, 200 spins?

Yessss, please smash. Love Steve and this track exemplifies everything that makes his sound unique and interesting. I've had this on repeat for the past month.

Even if it's a top 40 smash, I'd personally still give it some alt love if I were PD. It's all about choosing the right songs. Too good of a tune to say no. It fits well with alternative.

Still desperately trying to figure out why this is #1 on Billboard’s flagship Rock hybrid chart. What am I missing? This sounds like a GOOD - but straight up R&B Song…?

If this is what R&B sounds like nowadays, I'll have to listen to more. This sounds like indie bedroom pop to me. But it's good anyhow.

i still think it's wild that only year after mood and without you soured into the top 5 despite being about as alternative as blake shelton, massive pop hits that actually fit the format like this + as it was are only barely cracking the top 40. y'all think it's the format over correcting, radio just being that out of touch, or smth else ?

Its likely backlash. Without You got truly awful data from listeners to the point where it’s been fingered by radio professionals as being a cause for dropping ratings literally on its own. There’s a reason why no one has touched a LAROI song since. Romantic Homicide is having a hugely aggressive campaign right now basically telling ALT that they’re stupid for passing on popular songs that fit the format purely because they’re popular. It’s a bold strategy, let’s see how it works out for that one.

I would also add abcdefu to that list of songs. 100% also Audacy changing their alternative programming staff had a role in this, as the regionalization changes in September 2020 further helped both Laroi and 24k with them heavily backing them then. They've since lowered down on the pop crossovers.

To add onto my point: I think the late-10’s push to make Alternative a pop format backfired because frankly many of the songs were crap. They were just bizarre for the sake of being bizarre with synths and trap beats that clashed violently even with the soft indie on Alt playlists, to say nothing of any rock or punk songs that were on there. They just did not mesh and the listeners revolted. The only Alt stations doing well are those that merely paid lip service to alternative pop or didn’t touch it at all like KPNT, WBUZ, WXDX, KFRR, etc. Everyone who leaned too far towards AJR, Two Feet, Panic!, etc is trying to crawl out of a deep hole. The reason why so many Alt vets have revivals right now, and why so many golds are dominating playlists, are because Alt is generally shaken and they don’t know where to go.
Now, the irony is that there is a large selection of Alt-adjacent pop music that actually is high quality! They seem to fuse new wave and bedroom pop together into a new sound. “As It Was”, “Bad Habit”, “Then It All Goes Away” by Dayglow, “Last Star” by James Ivy, “I’m In Love With You” by The 1975, and yes, “Romantic Homicide” falls into that too… it’s a fresh sound and it works on Alt! TikTok likes it. Adults like it. It’s more timeless and less abrasively strange than the Alt-pop of the late 2010’s. But Alt is once burned, twice shy because of how poorly those earlier “hits” went over. Don’t you just love irony? Now that the format can go pop the programmers who wanted to take the format pop are too scared to.

Sounds like a redux of the early 2000s, when programmers overreacted against the Smash Mouth/Matchbox 20 era of Alt by doubling down on nu-metal and butt rock.
