Mass buying obviously played a role to a degree but that's true of any #1 debut from an artist with a rabid fan base. She dropped multiple editions, sure, but most anyone would have done the same if #1 was within reach. Can't fault her for playing the game, and at least this song is genuinely connecting with the general public unlike most of her previous close calls. I don't love the song but she was long overdue for a solo #1. One can still want the rules changed though can't they? And it not take away or say anything about any particular artist using it to their advantage? but within this forum we have those who want to get rid of radio or sales or .. etc etc .. the rules are what Billboard says they are .. so if they say sales count for X and radio counts for Y then that is what it’s going to be . Having said that , I do respect your perspective 😊

Exactly. So we no longer need to reply to that claim because it wasn't true.

Perhaps calling it mass remixing or something akin to that would be more accurate.

"Super Freaky Girl" would have missed No. 1 had it not been also at the top of Streaming Songs. This is the kind of thing Billboard wanted to address when they restricted downloads permissible and they've been successful at it so far.
idek what "mass remixing" is lmao there's a singular remix of the song. plus acapella and instrumental versions, and the clean versions of all. pretty much things that have been industry standards for a long time. she's not reinventing the wheel like "Butter (Cooler Remix)," "Butter (Melted Remix)," "Butter (Ghee Remix)," "Butter (Vegan Remix)" or whatever, each of which were available to download 4 times per customer.

A simple adjustment to stop multiple versions counting would level the playing field and take away the power of rabid fan bases and show the chart as a more broad appeal popularity chart. Those same rule changes would not just apply to sales but also stresming, and rsdio although that's less an issue, the rules are what they are. But pulse, and people in general always talk about problems with rules and what needs to be changed, every rule change the Hot 100 has made was discussed long in advance by users here and pointed out problems with the rule.

Since we’re on the topic of As It Was, I think at this point, it wouldn’t be surprising if it topped the streaming on the YE, it’s been consistent with no signs of slowing down. Very little chance this doesn’t happen. Wait For U has less weeks, First Class has lost heavily, WDTAB is not charting, and Super Gremlin is about to leave. Heat Waves is the only competition at this point.

Even with the more questionable things behind it going To the top, Dr. you know who, and the song itself being mediocre, congrats to Nicki for a long overdue solo #1!

Yeah Nicki was long overdue of a solo #1 (like "Anaconda" from 7 years ago was very close, but that possibility was shaken off, pun very much intended or "Super Bass" or "Starships" could've done that as well) but better late than never I suppose, congrats to her

Is anyone really surprised that “As It Was” isn’t going anywhere. I’ve known since its release that this would be a song that radio would play for a months on end in similar fashion to “Blinding Lights,” “Stay” and “Levitating.” Anyone who didn’t predict this needs to read the room better. There’s no point in complaining about it now. I predicted this in May: Phieagles of course disagreed but looks like it's going to happen.

Nicki Minaj’s song is also number one on streaming songs. It is not a BTS situation. Airplay just has way too much weight. They are acting as if it is the 90s with people waiting on the airwaves to play a song. It is so outrageous Butter debuted at #1 with 32.2m streams (#4)

Wasn't so much "mass buying" as it was Not mass-buying per se, however, as it is all clearly spelled out here, it does show a clear and extreme way to manipulate the rules to the song's advantage, allowing fans to effectively purchase EIGHT versions of the song during the tracking week, and especially how they released 4 of these versions an hour and a half before the tracking week ended! Without all of these versions the song would not have been #1, even though it is #1 on streaming. It's not as bad as the BTS situation, where it was done week after week after week, and there were shady outside sources funding the purchases of the copies, but Nicki's situation here still needs to be mentioned, as this is not quite as true and genuine of a #1 as it's being painted out to be. Someone mentioned a possible rule change before that I think might be a good idea, that remixes/alternate versions of a song not released the same day as the original should count towards the following week, in order to prevent this day-by-day horserace watch of the charts where they release last-minute versions based on how the point-predictions are looking.

She has liked a few tweets with people mentioning "the lead is coming" or things like that. DWHAP did well on its core formats so that brought her back to radio at the top of the year. Bussin and We Go Up helped a lil as well. You can tell the difference in promotion that Republic is putting alot behind SFG, so they can get things rolling finally.

It is so outrageous Butter debuted at #1 with 32.2m streams (#4) well, besides not being #1 on streaming (number being higher than "SFG" is irrelevant to how songs perform compared to other songs in their respective weeks--which is what the charts are about), I don't think most people oppose "Butter" debuting at number-one as much as its extremely fraudulent 11-week run, most of which blocked much more realistic and balanced hit songs ("good 4 u" and "STAY"). let's circle back if "Super Freaky Girl" is still No. 1 in November.

As if Jay-Z and Missy Elliott aren't legends. so are Lauryn Hill, Foxy Brown, Lil Kim... the tweet doesn't say "the only legends." it says "legends only."

As said many times before it's "manipulation" when it doesn't work in your favor otherwise it is fans buying 8 different versions of the same song.
Extra remixes are nothing new. - been happening for a while now.
How many songs with the extra marketing push from a remix has got a temporary boost? Too many to count
The long since discontinued "Digital Tracks" chart used to separate the various mixes but even then it has always been the case that all versions of the track will count for the same songs.
In any case, it probably won't move 89K downloads next week and it is rare that sales will do much of anything for a great period of time anyway

I'm pretty sure that's still the case, mostly because of the same reason everyone else has listed when they say that (released too late in the year to make it). Its locked for YE Top 3 though, and i wouldnt be surprised if it somehow snags the YE #1.

heyyy, they forgot the legendary M.I.A. Jay-Z, too. He had singles at least in the early 90s. Unless they’re counting album release dates.
