It's cool to see Nicki, Cardi, Lizzo and Doja in the top 10 at the same time.
Also, Die For You in the top 40 finally, I hope!

October 11, 199701 NE Candle In The Wind 1997 / Something About The Way You Look Tonight - Elton John (1st of 14 weeks at #1) I doubt we'll ever see a song entering the Billboard year so late and topping it with just a few weeks. Just an iconic run.

It had 7 or 8 weeks in that chart year. From its first week, according to the Hot 100 Singles Spotlight feature in the magazine, it was #4 of the YE, and a drop of 50% in points would be enough to lead the year off the bat. It instead dipped ~65%, but its hold was good enough in week 3 that that seems to be the week when it snagged that #1 YE spot.

YAASSSSS!!!!!!!!!! Block that annoying piece of s**t!!! You don't have to remind me of that grim reality man :( "Gangnam Style" is still an iconic classic though Well, Soulsista is gonna be reminding us all of that ICONIC moment for 6 more weeks. And while yes Gangnam Style is a remembered classic (even though I hate it), Overexposed was Maroon 5's commercial peak. I literally hear all four hits from Overexposed all over the radio to this day. That era was something else for Maroon 5. The fact that all four singles were top 10 hits, and they're all still remembered to this day, I don't care how much you hate Maroon 5, you can't deny that they did THAT. Annoying K-Pop one hit wonder boy can't relate.

Gangnam Style was still the biggest song for that time period. Fact.

I will say that he's definitely right that those Overexposed singles have had some pretty solid longevity. I've heard them on the radio a lot since their peak, especially Love Somebody funny enough
Gangnam Style was definitely the most popular song at the time though lol

Gangnam Style was definitely the most popular song at the time though lol It definitely was more talked about, but that doesn't exactly mean bigger. I barely heard Gangnam Style on the radio at all, whereas One More Night played every 10 songs.

I barely heard Gangnam Style on the radio at all, whereas One More Night played every 10 songs. it literally became the most-viewed video in YouTube history four months after being released. first video ever to pass 1 billion views, accomplished that in five months. it was a streaming monster, but of course Billboard did not count YouTube streams back then. how is One More Night at all bigger? I'm pretty sure most people on the street would give you a blank stare if you asked them to hum One More Night, but they probably remember Gangnam Style if they were alive in 2012.

Baauer got a number one hit because Psy didn't. Billboard didn't want to repeat that embarrassment (the same way they allowed catalog albums to chart *after* MJ died because it was a bad look for them). They knew they messed up.

It's pretty safe to say that Gangnam Style won that battle in the end, One More Night sat at #1 for 9 weeks but has no cultural impact 10 years later aside from some recurrent airplay while Gangnam Style is still a huge song and incredibly well remembered.

Everyone's clearly got a different experience so one anecdote isn't exactly better than another but for what it's worth when I was 11/12, I vividly remember I rarely if ever heard One More Night on the radio or "in the wild". And this wasn't due to purposefully avoiding Maroon 5 either because I remember Payphone was played a lot, so much so that people still know all the lyrics when it gets played during parties or at the club. So One More Night was barely played and isn't remembered (in my context). Y'know what is though... They even played it at a pride festival I went to

It’s strange seeing songs like First Class and About Damn Time having reasonable chart runs, nowadays #1 hits either drop down the chart fast like Break My Soul or sit around in the Top 10 for eight months like Heat Waves, rarely is there an in-between.

Its either songs that start huge with streaming and radio picks them up immediately (As It Was, Stay, First Class, Good For You, Industry Baby etc), or songs that grow a considerable amount of streaming along with radio, and both metrics stay stable for months on end (Blinding Lights, Levitating, Heat Waves, Save Your Tears)

Okay but how something feels “to you” also isn’t indicative as to how big it is overall. You do know that right? In terms of Gangnam Style, it was #2 with what Billboard counted at the time, which didn’t include YouTube. GS was known for how huge it was on YouTube. Shortly after this, Billboard included YouTube into its tabulation. Therefore, GS was factually the biggest song at that point in time that didn’t get the #1 based on a technically. “One More Night” was also a big hit, but “Gangnam Style” was bigger.
