Am I really spending my own birthday hosting a rankdown? Yep
34
Joe Jackson "Is She Really Going Out With Him?"
Points: 457 Standard Deviation: 23.17 Ranking without my list: #31
50 @crapkuki23
"Pretty women with gorillas walking down my street" lmao Joe Jackson campaigned against smoking bans and once even made a satirical song about smoking bans called "In 20-0-3" Also, shoutout to Top of the Pops, I don't know how many of these videos come from that source. Personal rating: 4/5
Up next: Three top-30's, and 5 people ranked it top-50.

Oh yeah, and the bonus tracks.
"Sunday Papers" by Joe Jackson would have been at #38 with Eton Rifles (it had 429 equivalent points, which is total # of points divided by 3/8) "Stay Free" by the Clash and "Total Control" by The Motels both would have been #35, tied with "Map Ref 41 Degrees N, 93 Degrees W". (That title is meant to reference the center of the United States - what is at that exact location is a ghost town (abandoned) literally called Zero in Iowa)
Joe Jackson "Sunday Papers"
Equivalent Points: 429
54 @crapkuki23
Want to learn about the new sex position? Hear about it in the Sunday papers. (Funny that it's literally Sunday right now)
The Clash "Stay Free"
Equivalent Points: 451
50 @crapkuki23
My favorite track from their second album Give Em Enough Rope. It's sung by Mick Jones and it's not about Joe Strummer, but someone he grew up with in his adolescence who got into trouble later on and went to the infamous Brixton jail (they did another song called "Guns of Brixton" later on). It's like the British equivalent of Rikers or Alcatraz here.
The Motel "Total Control"
Equivalent Points: 453
47 @crapkuki23 50 Optical Apex Not a band I know much about, really. I remember they had a song in the 1980 Alt rankdown "Danger".

Cool For Cats is such a cool song. Thank you Rock Band 2 for introducing it to me. I think it placed kinda low there too but like this that was a stacked list

The stuff that was at least 4/5 went all the way down to like #73 on my personal list here. I don't even think that would have happened if I'd sent a list for the 1981 Alt Year End.

The first song out to have no bottom-30 ranks.
33 The Pretenders "Kid"
Points: 472 Standard Deviation: 15.97 Ranking without my list: #34
23 @crapkuki23
For a few years, Chrissie Hynde owned an Italian-Meditteranian vegan restaurant in her hometown Akron, Ohio (which is also where Devo came from). Oddly enough, I feel like the Better Than Ezra song "In the Blood" (1995) sounds oddly similar to this. Maybe they're Pretenders fans? The Foo Fighter's song "The Pretender" name title was influenced by this band's name.
Up next: All but one user put this song in their top 50. The other has it in their bottom 20.

Speaking of the Pretender's restaurant, maybe they have fried impossible chicken? Or maybe boiled impossible lobster.... and speaking of boiling
32 The Human League "Being Boiled"
Points: 478 Standard Deviation: 24.59 Ranking without my list: #38
9 Optical Apex 40 @crapkuki23
98 Ernesto (he didn't want them, baby)
This was a complete friggin masterpiece. This sounds so different than their later stuff, like "Don't You Want Me" and "Fascination". The footage in that video is from the 1964 sci-fi film "Teens in the Universe". In this case, the song is about the problems with the practice of silkworm farming.
Up next: A very, very high ranking is lost. Oh no.

Ian Curtis, RIP lost way too soon.
31 Joy Division "She's Lost Control"
Points: 489 Standard Deviation: 29.77 (Sixth Highest) Ranking without my list: #32
1 @crapkuki23
This Doc Indie Party Rock as the only user left with all their top 10s remaining. @crapkuki23 is the first to lose a #1. This video is actually from 2019 and was made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the classic album Unknown Pleasures, which has one of the most easily-recognizable album covers of all time and stars Anna-Sophia Robb (she was the young girl in Bridge to Terabithia). This song was made after Ian Curtis was working at a work rehab center and worked with a girl with epilepsy who soon passed away from a seizure. Will continue revealing either later tonight or tomorrow.

I'm just gonna continue right where I left off. 70. The Fabulous Poodles - "Mirror StarI thought I would like this better from the intro alone. Reminded me of those bands like The Clocks, Tommy Tutone. Cool chorus. 69. Generation X - "Valley of the Dolls"Billy sounds great, but this song needs much more melody. 68. Public Image, Ltd. - "Memories"This band shoots pure blanks at me. Sounds like something played in the background at one of those underground clubs. Kind of monotonous with no real beginning nor end. At least I lost another bottom 10 tank scraper 67. 999 - "Homicide"This one was popular on KROQ for many years. There is a distant Cheap Trick vibe going on here. 66. Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Playground Twist"This was a first time listen for me from this band. I wouldn't put it up there with my favorites. I like the brass and added chimes, but not much more. 65. The Damned - "Love Song"I like some songs from The Dammed, but I never liked this one. 64. The Boomtown Rats - "I Don't Like Mondays"I have grown to like this one through the years. ten years ago? Bottom 10. My favorite song from this band is still "Up All Night". Very David Bowie-like. 63. Shoes - "Too Late"A little 80's Poprock with a hint of Brit Pop. 62. Buzzcocks - "Harmony in My Head"Damn I thought this would show up much higher? Total banger. 61. The Kinks - "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman"One of my favorites from this band. Love the disco influenced bassline, but its still clearly a rocking jam. This could have been on The Warriors soundtrack. 60. The Clash - "English Civil War"Not much going on with this song to begin with, but His vocal delivery also sounds terrible on this song. 59. The Pretenders - "Stop Your Sobbing"Cool Heartland rock sounding song. Speaking of The Kinks. Ray Davis wrote this one. This album was like The Pretenders greatest hits. Besides "Brass In Pocket" my favs are "Tattoooed Love Boys", "Mystery Achievment" and "The Wait". I also have this album on vinyl. 58. The Specials - "Concrete Jungle"this was a little too Jungle Ska for me to handle. 57. David Bowie - "Look Back in Anger"This was alright. Not a Bowie fav of mine. He sounds great though. 56. Grace Jones - "On Your Knees"I love Disco. This song doesn't try to hide the fact that it is a pure Disco song cruising into New Wave era. 55. 20/20 - "Yellow Pills"Easily my style of melodic New Wave. Should have been on the 'Valley Girl' soundtrack. 54. Roxy Music - "Dance Away"This is a classic, but as far as New Romantic style goes I always preferred ABC, and Spandau Ballet to this band. 53. Lene Lovich - "Lucky Number"Did not know that about Thomas Dolby. Cool info. I like this song more each time I rank it. Maybe next time it goes top 40 on my list. 52. Elvis Costello and the Attractions - "Accidents Will Happen"A very melodic song with those vocals is kinda contradictory, but I do like this song enough to anchor my top half. 51. Squeeze - "Up the Junction" This is a fun band. I like the story telling lyrics. so where the hell is that song I placed at #95? Don't tell me you all found it enticing? 50. Gang of Four - "I Found That Essence Rare"I think I gave this song a 70's rank. 49 . The Beat - "Tears of A Clown"Such a great cover from a great band. This is just the right amount of Ska to keep me dancing. Yes "Mirror In The Bathroom" is the best English Beat jam. 48. David Bowie - "Boys Keep Swinging"Great song. I love this style for Bowie. I charted Duran Duran's cover version and took it top 10 on my charts. 47. Squeeze - "Cool for Cats"very different from "Black Coffee In Bed" , but still very enjoyable. 46. XTC - "Life Begins At the Hop"Not exactly my favorite song from a band I usually enjoy a lot. 45. Sparks - "Beat the Clock"These guys are to many the Godfathers of New Wave. To me they are more Artpop/synthpop, but I love their 70's and 80's discography. 44. Blondie - "Sunday Girl"A wonderful Britpop style song. This is another band who's first album is their greatest hits. I prefer "Hanging On The Telephone" to this one, but man this is pretty. 43. Ultravox - "Quiet Men"Going back to singingrulebritannia comment about this song makes me laugh, because it's relatively a new song to me. I've only heard it a couple times, but it is easily one of my favorites. If I were to redo my 1979 Top 100 I would surely include this one in m top half. Has a Gary Numan feel to it. 42. The Flying Lizards - "Money (That's What I Want)"Damn just misses the top 40. Love this song. It really sounds like they are banging on pots and pans and her vocals so unique for a song titled "Money" 41. The Cure - "10:15 Saturday Night"Besides "Jumping On Someone..." and "Boys Don't Cry" I really didn't start liking this band until 1982. This song here is no exception. 40. The Specials - "A Message to You, Rudy"There's that #95. I didn't enjoy this one bit. Even the brass felt out of tune. Anyway, isn't my tank cleared yet? 39. The Stranglers - "Duchess"My favorite Stranglers' hit. Just misses my top 10. 38. The Jam - "Eton Rifles"Not too familiar with this one. Should grow on me with the coming years. 37. Patti Smith Group - "Frederick"Sounds very Tori Amos. Love the ultra poppy chorus. 36. The Sparks - "Tryouts for the Human Race"Here I am loving Sparks again. very spacy with Italo Disco influences. 35. Wire - "Map Ref. 41 Degrees N, 93 Degrees W"This was a first time listen. I didn't find it to be anything special, but it wasn't too terrible either. 34. Joe Jackson - "Is She Really Going Out With Him?"This is my favorite song of his. Has that Rick Springfield Powerpop vibe. Blows that 1982 "Steppin' Out" song away up ,under and sideways. 33. The Pretenders - "Kid"Another good one. Kind of hard to find a really bad Pretenders' song. 32. The Human League - "Being Boiled"Very artsy. The band originally wanted Heaven 17's vocalist as their own. Aren't we all glad they decided on Philip Oakey instead. 31. Joy Division - "She's Lost Control"This band's style of Darkwave is hit or miss with me. Sometimes his vocals work for me and sometimes they don't. I don't think I have ever had an intact top 10 going into a top 30 on any RD. If there is please remind me. M-M-M-M- My top 10 songs rule.

While I roam on planet Claire, I enter the love shack and step on a rock lobster, so I dance this mess around. Then I get struck by a strong strobe light, double whammy kiss. Near the love shack is a large potato reserve, it's like your own private Idaho.
30 The B-52's "Planet Claire"
Points: 509 Standard Deviation: 25.52 Ranking without my list: #24
5 @crapkuki23
The B-52's member Kate Pierson and her wife own several rental spaces called Kate's Lazy (blank), one of them is Kate's Lazy Desert, which is several restored vintage vans available as rental space in the Californian desert. Personal ranking: 4/5 (Neat synths - I'd say one song that this was influenced by was "Telstar" by the Tornadoes, which was all the way back in 1962)
Up next: Two top-5's again fall to the wayside. Also we have two bottom 30's.

29 The Knack "My Sharona"
Points: 514 Standard Deviation: 30.50 Ranking without my list: #19
16 @crapkuki23
The song that kicked off Wierd Al Yankovic's career was a satirical cover of this called "My Bologna". The song also re-entered the Hot 100 charts in 1994 very briefly after it was seen in a Winona Ryder film where the main characters dance to the song in a convenience store not called Kwik-E-Market. Personal ranking: 3.5/5 (My last one that wasn't at least a 4/5)
Up next: #28 has no top-10 rankings but 4 are top-20 and one will lose a bottom-20.

The Dead Kennedys "California Uber Alles"
Points: 518 Standard Deviation: 26.18 Ranking without my list: #29
15 @crapkuki23
they have come for your uncool niece
This song includes a Shakespeare reference, with the "Serpent's egg" line. The song is also meant to attack Ronald Reagan as California governor, and his successor Jerry Brown. The "White horse" lyric is a reference to a line made by the latter. Personal rating: 5/5 (Pure, raw punk energy)
Up next: #27 has one top-10 ranking, while another is very close. No bottom-30 ranks, but two bottom-50 ranks are present.

Points: 520 Standard Deviation: 19.84 Ranking without my list: #30
30 @crapkuki23 68 Doc Indie Party Rock
Right after "California Uber Alles" namedrops Orwell's 1984, this song has a standard deviation of 19.84. Neat. David Byrne, the lead singer of the Talking Heads, also once had a TED Talk about the impacts of architecture on music, which really fits with this song. He is also on the autism spectrum, which makes him one of the most prominent musicians on the spectrum. Personal rating: 5/5 (My mom had the album this is from on a record player, this was one of my favorites from the album)
Up next: #26 also has no top-10 rankings, and only two are top-20. However, only one ranking is bottom-50, and it barely is.

26 The Clash "I Fought the Law"
Points: 528 Standard Deviation: 12.74 Ranking without my list: #26
33 @crapkuki23
The original version of this song by Bobby Fuller Four was on the 1966 Year End I hosted in 2022. (Sadly, Bobby Fuller died at only 23 from a mysterious accident that very year). Did you know that Mick Jones, the Clash's lead guitarist and co-vocalist, was also the lead singer for Big Audio Dynamite. The Clash also had 6 official albums, but their final album is often not counted since it's so widely disliked and it didn't have Mick Jones or even very listenable production by most viewers opinions. One of their songs was on the Year End Alt list in 1985, and it was bottom 10 I think.
Anyway, I have to begin work soon. We are finally in the final quarter! Someone loses a #2 in the next five reveals, which I plan to reveal this evening. I want to get up to #11 tonight starting around 10:30 or 11. For those who won't be awake, these reveals should be waiting for you in the morning. (And for those who lose a #1, you might also be mourning)

This song was in another rankdown? That's neat Great. Up to this date I still don't know how to go revisit past RDs unless I save my submitted lists in my mailbox, so How about a link. For the life of me I couldn't find it in my mailbox and now I'm curious to see what other songs were in that rankdown.

EXTRAS
Lipps, Inc. "Funkytown"
The 8th biggest hit in the US in 1980, though the album came out in 1979. It kinda does sound like a few other stuff on here.
Simple Minds "Chelsea Girl"
Before their Breakfast Club hit, even before "Love Song" or "I Travel", they had this. From their first album.
The Sinceros "Take Me to Your Leader"
Another band from London formed in 1978.
Japan "Quiet Life"
Another band from London (no, not Japan). These guys were in the 1980 Alt rankdown. The guys voice reminds me of Duran Duran.
The Dishrags "Love is Sh*t"
Vancouver girl punk
The B-52's "Dance This Mess Around"
Song references a Supremes song
The Skids "Animation"
The album cover caused controversy due to its resemblance of the 1936 Olympics, hosted in Nazi Germany.
Toyah "Danced"
Basically Siouxsie and the Banshees mixed with Queen or something

25 The Police "Walking on the Moon"
Points: 532 Standard Deviation: 18.24 Ranking without my list: #17
27 @crapkuki23 75 Optical Apex Some may say this doesn't deserve to be top 10, but gonecountry would disagree.
Anyway, did you know that if you went back in time like millions upon millions of years, you would notice that the moon was far bigger from the view of the Earth, as the moon was formerly much closer to the Earth - it is actually moving away from the Earth at a slow pace.
Up next: #24 sees one top 10 drift away. But one person parked it somewhere in the bottom 50.

24 The Cars "It's All I Can Do"
Points: 535 Standard Deviation: 19.51 Ranking without my list: #21
32 @crapkuki23
This video was not made by The Cars, btw.
Did you know the fastest car in the world is the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut (made by a Swedish brand), it can go 310 miles per hour. That means ideally, it could go from New York City to Chicago in only 2 hours.
Up next: This reveal won't be very kind to someone who has already lost a top 10 recently. Someone is about to lose a bottom 50, though.

Nick Lowe "Cruel to Be Kind"
Points: 543 Standard Deviation: 17.60 Ranking without my list: #22
44 @crapkuki23
This video shows some footage of Nick Lowe's own wedding, he was married to Carlene Carter, who is also daughter of June Carter Cash, and therefore step-daughter of Johnny Cash himself. Also, the chauffer at the end is Dave Edmonds (They performed together as Rockpile - a band we saw on the 1980 Alt list, where there song performed very badly.) Speaking of weddings, I chose to look at some of the oddest weddings ever - some I saw included people who got married inside a shark tank (with a small group of guests nearby), a couple that got married on a bungee jump platform, someone who got married on a cliff, and even a couple that got fully naked for their wedding. {Warning: NSFL content}However, the strangest was probably one where a woman chose to marry her dead fiancee inside a morgue.
Up next: #22 sees 2 top-5 rankings shattered, but someone gets to see some joy as a bottom 50 is eliminated.

22 The Damned "Smash It Up"
Points: 548 Standard Deviation: 22.14 Ranking without my list: #25
21 @crapkuki23
One more reveal, and there will be nothing left of Butterflies & Hurricanes 's bottom-50 here. Can he lose his #54 soon? Let's see. This also leaves me as the only remaining user with their entire top-5 intact, but since I'm the host - I'm going to count American Idiot as the winner for this one. Also, that guy was wearing a red suit and suddenly I want to have that exact suit. And speaking of suits, the most expensive frivalous lawsuit is said to be from a man who sued a laundry company for $67 million over lost suit pants. This did infact go through the court system, but the company obviously never got sued for that much. Sometimes, the suit doesn't fit. (Pearson v. Chung) Remember when The Offspring had a cover of this, which was ranked in the 1995 Alt rankdown? (I think it did badly)
Up next: What's #21? 3 people lose a bottom 20, and one of whom loses a top 10, which is even worse. But only one person loses a bottom 50, but it's a very very low bottom 50.
