2020 wasn’t that huge. Maybe critically praised to some degree but it didn’t have the hits his album before that had. CSTF had a better start than “Roar,” which was a single actually coming off of a major radio hit album by a radio darling. In any case, for Miley sometimes the cards just align. Radio friendly song with a lot of buzz by an artist everyone is already familiar with on an upswing in her career that has often been polarizing. It’s kind of a perfect storm in a lot of ways. ah yes the biggest album of 2013 wasn’t huge got it Yes because the massive number of radio hits was surely indicative of how well a generic soundtrack single would do out of the gate. gghunt.utasites.cloud/charts/justin_timberlake.htm

Everybody's talking Shakira this and Shakira that without crediting Bizarrap.
I know, Shak is amazing and her longevity is outstanding but part of the success is also thanks to the huge platform the BZRP sessions are in the Spanish speaking countries.
Everybody is waiting for the next session and which artist is going to shine, and in this case you add Shakira and the divorce scandall... and you got the perfect storm.
Bizarrap is a marketing genious. From making beats in his bedroom 3 years ago to topping global charts in 2022.

23(=) RAYE, 070 Shake - Escapism. 663,367 (+50,736) 57(+3) RAYE, 070 Shake - Escapism. (Sped Up) 425,108 (+40,633)
Wow! This would put Raye in top ten territory. Hopefully she gets the chance to reach those heights in the Hot 100.

Can’t Stop the Feeling seemed to have a mega big radio deal. I remember it was doing like Hello numbers almost first week on radio… it was surprising a bit but with that much budget first week it was understandable it would pull numbers out the gate. Problem was still the most random comeback smash ever imo. And I was a big Ariana supporter then. How? The Way debuted top 10 just a year earlier, despite the EDM craze, so it was clear she had interest. They figured out her image for album 2 and released a Max Martin smash as the lead. I’m reading through the thread now to fact check myself. but people seemed pretty convinced that Problem will be a smash, once they saw the single cover and the teasers. To quote icon surfy: Ummm... YYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS! It sounds like she's found a way to modernize her sound without having to sacrifice her old-fashioned soul! I smell legend! This will be a hit *hopefully* Several people posted about it being a future #1 before it was even released The Way debuted top 10, and that was that. It sold barely 200K first week and the follow up singles bombed on arrival. To go from that, to essentially debuting #1 (blocked by like 1%) against two of the biggest hits ever with 450K sales first week was unheard of. Nobody expected her to suddenly be debuting with peak Gaga, Taylor, and Katy lead single numbers in 2014 after ONE moderate hit her entire career. Sure someone could’ve predicted the song to sound like a #1, but I doubt nobody thought it would’ve been able to basically debut #1 right out of the gate. It’s definitely revisionist history to claim Problem’s first week performance was expected lol

The Contenders: SZA, Miley Cyrus & Shakira/Bizarrap All Real Possibilities for Hot 100 No. 1 While SOS likely remains unmovable as the No. 1 album, SZA's "Kill Bill" fights challengers new and old to be the No. 1 song.
www.billboard.com/pro/sza-miley-cyrus-taylor-swift-shakira-hot-100-no-1/ BY ANDREW UNTERBERGERWWelcome to The Contenders, a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming charts dated Jan. 28), SZA’s SOS is expected to easily fend off challengers on the Billboard 200, but there will be more of a contest to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100, where she faces stiff competition from Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Shakira & Bizarrap as she seeks her first No. 1 . SZA, “Kill Bill” (Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA): As SZA’s SOS spends its fifth week atop the Billboard 200, her biggest single yet climbs to a new peak of No. 2 on the Hot 100 (dated Jan. 21) this week. The melancholy (and murderous) “Kill Bill” has ruled Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart for three weeks now, and it’s now also gaining at radio, debuting this week at No. 24 on Pop Airplay and No. 48 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Airplay. However, “Bill” has yet to appear on the 50-position all-genre Radio Songs listing, which Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” — the eight-week Hot 100 No. 1 currently keeping SZA from the top spot — has ruled for four weeks. (Still, “Bill” is just below the survey this week and likely to debut next week.) Also to help get the breakout hit over the top and score the first Hot 100 No. 1 of her career, SZA released a new four-song “Kill Bill” pack to streaming services last Friday (Jan. 13), adding sped-up, instrumental and a cappella versions to the original — all of which are currently for sale on her website, and discounted to 69 cents. Miley Cyrus, “Flowers” (Columbia): Whether or not “Bill” overtakes “Anti-Hero” this week, it could face entirely new roadblocks in a pair of much-hyped singles that came out last week. The bigger of those is likely “Flowers,” Friday’s first taste of veteran pop star Miley Cyrus’ upcoming Endless Summer Vacation album that’s due in March. Produced by regular Harry Styles collaborators Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, the mid-tempo kiss-off immediately won fans for its sunny pop-rock groove, self-reliant message and Bruno Mars-echoing (possibly Liam Hemsworth-referencing?) chorus. After the song went viral on TikTok over the weekend, it bounded to the top of both the Spotify and Apple Music daily charts, as well as the iTunes song sales chart — and top 40 has also quickly seized onto the track, with a splashy debut sure to come on Radio Songs next week. It’s the kind of multi-platform dominance that has largely eluded Cyrus, despite her continued household-name status, over the past decade; she hasn’t reached higher than No. 8 on the Hot 100 (as an added performer to The Kid LAROI’s “Without You” remix in 2021) since she topped the chart in 2013 with “Wrecking Ball,” her sole No. 1 so far. But Cyrus’ timing is right with “Flowers” — released last Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. EST, five hours ahead of the tracking week for next week’s Hot 100. She’s taking advantage of an early-year pop landscape that’s relatively light on impactful new releases, as evidenced by the Hot 100’s top 40 currently being overrun by songs from 2022 (or even longer ago). But just as importantly, she’s riding positive momentum from her popular and well-received Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party NBC special, in which she dueted on old hits with godmother Dolly Parton and teased new music to come, with her full album announcement arriving less than a week later. It all adds up to Cyrus having her best shot in 10 years at a return trip to No. 1 next week. Bizarrap & Shakira, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” (Dale Play): Before “Flowers” arrived, the buzziest debut of last week was easily Shakira’s incendiary team-up with in-demand Argentine DJ/producer Bizarrap. The propulsive electro-pop banger lit up the internet upon its release last Wednesday (Jan. 11, at 7:00 p.m. ET), particularly for its shots-fired lyrics aimed directly at the superstar’s footballer ex-husband Gerard Piqué. “Vol. 53” quickly surged to No. 1 on YouTube’s Trending chart, and also reached the top 10 and top 20 on the daily Spotify and iTunes U.S. charts, respectively. Despite coming out six days into the prior tracking week, “Vol. 53” already debuts on several Billboard charts this week, including an impressive No. 12 bow on the Global 200. It misses out on the Hot 100, but with its streaming momentum staying strong, it’s certain to crash the chart next week. However, with stateside radio not yet embracing the Spanish-language track as much as it has “Flowers” and “Kill Bill,” it may end up lagging behind those front-runners. Taylor Swift, “Anti-Hero” (Republic): While the threats to its reign are numerous, you can’t count out Taylor Swift and her incumbent eight-week No. 1. Swift and her team have made all the right moves to extend the Midnights single’s reign to career-best lengths, including releasing a number of remixes for the track for sale exclusively on her website — and, most recently, discounting those remixes to 69 cents from last Monday to Thursday (Jan. 9-12). Does she have any last-second tricks up her sleeve for this chart week?

It’s definitely revisionist history to claim Problem’s first week performance was expected lol The Way was a nice little hit for her, it debuted with 220k and had a good longevity (26 weeks overall, 4 in the top 10) and the album debuted at #1 with 140k, which proves she had a huge fanbase and a lot of people excited to hear the next project. If she sold 220k with her debut (and R&B) single, I don't know why it's surprising to see huge numbers for a much more radio-friendly modern bop like Problem, and the fact that she had Iggy on it didn't hurt either (Fancy was #4 when Problem debuted at #3). And like Codex said, people already knew it'll be a smash based on a cover, I remember it was really controversial for some LOL. As for Timberlake, he had like 5 top 10s in 2013-2014, and it was expected (to me at least) to see his first song in 2 years debuting at #1, especially if it's the most radio-friendly song of all time.

Not really sure what those statistics prove. Yes, the 2020 Experience (I'm combining Parts 1 & 2, as they were really part of the same era) didn't have 5 smash radio hits like the FutureSex/LoveSounds era, but it had 3 very sizable radio hits (The #1 Mirrors and the #2's Suit and Tie and Not a Bad Thing), plus the #3-peaking Holy Grail with Jay-Z not included in that chart, so combined with Part 1 being the best-selling album that year and the high critical acclaim, he built up a pretty substantial legacy by that point that shouldn't have made it all that surprising CSTF opened big. Plenty of other artists have had 3 (or fewer) big radio hits but from a very well-selling album and then smashed out of the gate with follow-up singles.

It was not much more than Selena Gomez & Demi Lovato who never went anywhere towards selling 450K first week with a lead single. It would’ve been absolutely shocking if Selena/Demi did 450K first week with a lead single and they were *more* established Pop names than Ariana at the time lmao. And The Way was not really an R&B song. It was a Pop song with an R&B feel. It was not some outlier for 2013’s landscape when Suit & Tie, Blurred Lines, and various other blue-eyed artists covering Urban were amongst the years biggest hits. 😭 It was completely radio friendly for that year. This is a bunch of revisionist history lmao. The only other females who did 430K+ with lead singles first week: Taylor, Shake It Off - (following the monstrous Red era) Katy, Part Of Me/Roar - (following the monstrous Teenage Dream era) Adele, Hello - (following the monstrous 21 era) Gaga, Born This Way - (following the monstrous The Fame Monster) All the other women were coming off of some of the biggest eras in modern history. Ariana was coming off… Yours Truly? Lmao. If you don’t see how her performing similarly to their comebacks was a complete surprise at the time then it’s honestly just arguing to argue at this point.

Seems like Made You Look has peaked, it's streaming highs seem to be well in the past and it's radio has been pretty stagnant lately. I don't really see it going much further, especially with incoming competition from SZA, Miley, Metro Boomin, Gaga, etc.

the Kill Bill situation can really only go two ways at this point, either it peaks at #2 and becomes one of those iconic #2 hits OR it hits #1 sometime after Miley's run showing how consistently popular it's been
ofc I prefer the latter scenario but if it comes down to it, I wouldn't mind SZA joining the iconic #2 club

I think it’s fun and funny to see the random topics that get brought up here, like I didn’t really follow the charts that much in the early 10s so it’s fun to see people talk about random chart stuff like that (for instance it’s always great to see Soulsista’s posts looking back at this week in chart history)

If you don’t see how her performing similarly to their comebacks was a complete surprise at the time then it’s honestly just arguing to argue at this point. my point is that Ariana's career is hyped since the first second she released her debut single, unlike Taylor/Katy/Adele/Gaga. If she did 220k in the first week with no previous songs and albums, she really couldn't go down from that, especially with a song like Problem, plus she didn't wait too long after Yours Truly. I understand someone would be confused from this point of view, but there was a huge buzz around the song before the release. Fans choosing the cover artwork, the song available for pre-order 7 days before, those teasers were everywhere, and she performed it on Radio Disney Music Awards (people were surprised by her choreography) and iHeartRadio Music Awards (viral moment with Rihanna) during the first week. Even I was hyped for the song and I didn't touch her debut album.

Seems like Made You Look has peaked, it's streaming highs seem to be well in the past and it's radio has been pretty stagnant lately. I don't really see it going much further, especially with incoming competition from SZA, Miley, Metro Boomin, Gaga, etc. What’s Gaga got? Bloody Mary I'm assuming?

Bloody Mary I'm assuming? I mean unless America decided to dig out Hold My Hand from its grave then yes it most definitely is Bloody Mary.

I don’t think there’s any worse song being a “nice little hit” for Ariana than Focus....now what was THAT???😭

the current hits are bringing me so much joy. Compared to this time last year: not only are there actually new hits, they're also serving quality!

Haven't done this in months but here's a small briefing on what i think goes recurrent this week: Hold Me Closer (isn't even gaining on the radio so it won't get the pass so many got over the holidays) Fall In Love (i mean, it's country radio run is over, Jimmy Cooks has already left, and it's literally at #50. i'd be shocked if it doesn't leave this week) Victoria's Secret (the radio has pretty thoroughly peaked for this one, and it's not like it has the streaming to hold) Son Of A Sinner (yeah, the usual fall-off for a song after it peaks on country radio likely means this one's leaving) As for some other songs that might come close but likely won't: Unstoppable (yeah this one actually gained on the radio this week. yeah the gains were incredibly small but still, yikes) About Damn Time and Vegas (these 2 are losing too slowly on the radio to really be in the running for recurrency) I Ain't Worried and Sunroof (same as above, just with the added bonus of being higher on the charts as the other two)
