To answer my own question, drivers license had a stretch from Day 4 to Day 10 with 89,013,286 streams. Flowers could beat that with solid holds (and also beat Adele's standard tracking week record).

It kind of makes sense but is still surprising about the huge success of Flowers.

Miley Cyrus is a huge name that most people know around any country where the Disney Channel was popular and the song itself is very accessible for everyone. Its just surprising because her last few efforts haven't been as popular but I guess they weren't as "accessible" or promoted enough.

not sure why people are so shocked by this success, this is easily the most radio friendly song Miley has done in the past decade.. yes its not the masterpiece that midnight sky was but midnight sky didn't cater to the GP the way this. this is a safe radio formula instant hit.. the minute I heard it I thought of maroon 5 singles and bruno mars... is it the best of her discography ? no but its certainly a good song.. and if this is what it takes to put Miley in the discussion with Taylor and Olivia and Adele.. I'm here for it.

The Maroon 5 and Bruno Mars comparisons kinda make sense as this is sort of adult top 40-friendly, but it doesn't make sense for why it would smash out the gate -- neither of those artists are known for record-breaking debut weeks, they're more about songs with longevity.

I guess I am happy for the success of Flowers, but it makes it even more frustrating how Miley's last few albums/singles were largely overlooked despite being some of the best pop music of the past decade.

It is produced by Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, who both have worked on basically almost everything Harry has released during his solo career including all 3 of his albums. Harry also is a fellow labelmate and Miley's new album is being touted by both producers alongside Mike Will Made It (basically made most of Bangerz and did some stuff on Dead Petz and She Is Coming EP) and Greg Kurstin (pop gold tier producer since like the mid 2000s).

Flowers was definitely made with similar styles in mind for sure and well I mean it clearly works, even if I do think Flowers is far less interesting sonically than most of her other singles in the past like 5 years but still is a solid track all around, albeit one more so charged by its writing than anything else.

I don't think there's anything surprising about being shocked with Miley's extreme success with this song. She was always generally popular, well known worldwide, and known to have decent bops. But NO ONE could have expected her to come out swinging like a damn wrecking ball with her lead single.

While Plastic Hearts was not the commercial success that it should have been, I think the era did wonders for her in terms of public perception of her. I also will continuously say that the New Year's Eve special last year was the best thing she could have done with for career (and selecting it boy Pete Davidson to co-host). This year, moving from Pete to legend Dolly Parton and associating herself more with Dolly just gave her that much more credibility. You add the fact that flowers (1) Is a pretty good song; (2) it's about her ex, actor Liam Hemsworth; (3) The lyrics are a response to one of the most popular songs of the last decade; (4) Shakira just released a diss track to her ex and her song is getting compared via memes, TikTok, etc; it makes sense why the song is becoming such a hit.

Anyway, I'm not a Miley stan... but wanted to come with receipts and logic.

If radio takes hold with Flowers like it did with As It Was, I can realistically see it being YE #1 but again it's too early to tell. Usually by May we know what will be #1.

Somewhat of a random comparison to bring up, and not really that surprising given it was his first single released after the huge success of the 2020 Experience era, so the demand was there, and it was hugely hyped as a fun, dancey, summery song released right on the cusp of summer, even if it wasn't actually a great song.

Can’t Stop the Feeling seemed to have a mega big radio deal. I remember it was doing like Hello numbers almost first week on radio… it was surprising a bit but with that much budget first week it was understandable it would pull numbers out the gate.

Problem was still the most random comeback smash ever imo. And I was a big Ariana supporter then.

20/20 Experience was huge but the Part 2 album wasn't — maybe that's what's creating the confusion. TKO and Take Back the Night were pretty mild hits (#36 and #29, respectively) and Not a Bad Thing closed the era with a short-lived top ten peak (#8).

I'm sure the Trolls soundtrack single outcharting any of the 6 singles on the pair of 20/20 Experience albums wasn't on his bingo card either.

Midnight Sky is incredibly radio-friendly. It's basically impossible to be more radio-friendly than that song. No weird production, standard tempo, standard pop structure and song length, 80s inspired like the four biggest songs of the 2020s so far. Flowers matches Midnight Sky in radio friendliness but isn't any more radio-friendly
