SZA was in her Pop and R&B wins tonight. The girlies had big eras that are still going strong, so I'd say it was a fair AOTY choice.

I love Taylor and while I didnt expect her winning AOTY it was deserved solely by the impact it had. No need to be bitter though The same way Renaissance and Lemonade had impact. the criteria seems to change for others. Harry's House had almost zero impact, but somehow he won. He had a HUGE song that should have won ROTY or SOTY. No impact to whom? Because I saw him live in front of a crowd of 80k people screaming and crying to his music Lemonade deserved on quality alone but unfortunately she went against the mammoth 25.

But I don’t believe it had the same impact as Renaissance. Renaissance got way more critical acclaim than HH. The tour was super massive. The only person that beat her out was Taylor Swift. Cuff it dance challenge itself was a global phenomenon. To me HH was akin to I am Sasha Fierce. Huge, but more so because of Single Lady’s (like As it was). That’s why I think a SOTY and/or ROTY for as it was would have been the better award for Harry.

I think his ONE massive song from that album was very impactful and carried the the album. I think his previous album was a hell of a lot more impactful than HH. If I had to rate impact on a scale of 10, HH would get a 3 or 4 (which is very little to me). But I would give As it Was a 9. For me HH was not as creative as his previous work. I’d rate his previous album as a 6.5/7 in terms of impact. Again, this is how I see it. I’m sure some Stan out there would argue me down and say that HH impact is a level 9.

Trevor Noah should not host this anymore. He has zero stage presence. A waiting room couch has more presence. Why do they keep using him? There are definitely others who could do it better. Why aren't they being chosen? Just because he looks good in a suit does not mean he is host material.

Mmm. I really like Renaissance and think it should have won but I feel like it was more of a "she should have won this by now" than it really changing the game. Her most impactful album and worst snub is her self titled which changed the industry with it's drop and commercial slayage.

Honestly when it comes to AOTY, it’s more about who’s perceived as more of a “real musician”, so the conventional singer-songwriters archetype will always have an edge here. The sad truth is, vast majority of the general public (and the voting body) still views Beyoncé as this pop diva that shakes her bum in a skimpy dress and sings about being sexy. Even though she has evolved way past that, her general public image hasn’t really moved past the IASF era to most people outside of the Pop/R&B fandom. The fact that she has won so many in her categories doesn’t help her case at all, it creates this false narrative that perhaps she’s already over-awarded. If you read the article last year which included interviewed Grammy voters, almost all of them voted based on perception, not merit.
And then there’s the genre bias, I genuinely believe R&B (all variations of it) is at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to being respected and valued within the recording community. They have to acknowledge it given the sheer volume of these records in mainstream spaces, but when pitted against these other guitar-holding, piano-hogging type of singer-songwriters, R&B nominees will always be overlooked.

Her most impactful album and worst snub is her self titled which changed the industry with it's drop and commercial slayage. Exactly. Beyonce should have won AOTY for ST. Lemonade had no chance against 25, which was Adele's comeback album after the gamechanger that was 21 and a huge commercial success. Renaissance winning AOTY would have felt like a consolation prize because it was not as good as ST or even Lemonade. Harry won AOTY for being at the top of his game and as a sign of recognition from the industry that he isn't just a former boybander but a star in his own right. I'm happy with Midnights winnning AOTY. I'm not Taylor's biggest stan, but she made a great pop album and had an incredible year. A clear standout amongst this year's AOTY nominees. SZA once again proved that it's difficult for Urban Contemporary music to connect with voters in the general field. Regardless of how they try to expand and diversify the voting body, in the end pop still has the advantage.

So still no Black woman has won AOTY in the past 25 years (despite albums like The Emancipation of Mimi, The Breakthrough, Lemonade, The Diary of Alicia Keys, Under Construction, SOS), but Swift can win 4 times and Adele twice. Clearly the voters will vote for women (other white women have won in that span too), so it's not an issue of gender.
I see others are now saying what I've been saying yet was criticized for saying it.

finally watched Miley's performance, and woow...she is SO entertaining and charismatic, can't buy it - you're just born with that. and with those 2 wins, Miley was definitely the highlight of the night for me.

Okay here are my overall thoughts of last night:
I love 'Midnights' and am excited that it won Album of the Year. I do think that the Academy that she should not win it again for at least another five years to allow other deserving artists to shine.
I am sure she was just too caught up on the moment to thank and acknowledge Céline on stage so I won't hold that against her. Plus, they hugged immediately afterwards backstage.
I do think Lana deserved some award (personally, I think it should have been "A&W" for Song of the Year). Taylor dragging her up on stage is not as bad as people are making it out to be. Taylor has constantly praised Lana for her songwriting and music and just wanted her to be there to help her celebrate her moment. Yes, it's unfortunate that Lana lost in that category, but you can still lose and be happy for your friend at the same time.
I saw comments saying that 'Guts' should have won Album of the Year but I disagree. Because (and I know this might just be me), it feels like 'Sour' 2.0 and I feel like Olivia needs to branch out some more. I like the album but do not think it was deserving of the top award.
The performance is last night were incredible for the most part and I am happy for all of the winners, even if I didn't think they should have won.
The amount of hate Taylor is getting online right now for winning is atrocious. People calling the album 'MIDnights' and saying she is a mediocre songwriter is just sad. There's absolutely no reason to tear someone down like that. She had a big year and is obviously very beloved by so many people and it's okay not to like her, but to bully her about those things make me feel sorry for the people who make those comments. They must have pretty miserable lives to want to tear down other people successful or not. I don't understand why we can't just be happy for others. Even if you think someone else was deserving of the award, that is no reason to be rude to the person who actually won. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk!

Renaissance would’ve been her most critically acclaimed album had it not been that one singular negative review dragging its Metacritics score behind Lemonade. You might not think it was as good, but at least based on critical metrics it was on par if not better received than her previous efforts, not to mention with much more successful singles.

Not the Taylor being bullied narrative again. It doesn't work when she does it and it especially doesn't work when her fans do it.
Taylor is the most successful artist in the world and she's reached a level of over-saturation that borders on parody. A lot of people are just sick of her. Is that fair? I dunno. But it is what it is. The fact is, she's had it easier than every major star that came before her that got put through the ringer. Midnights is a middle of the road pop album. In a year full of great pop albums from female artists that will never even get an invite to the Grammys, let alone called up to that stage. So she gets some flack online for a day or two over a sloppy win, big whoop. She's fine.

So basically, people are looking to pick Taylor apart for any reason. Even when it’s for something that we all have done (unintentionally) multiple times in our lives?!!! I won an award at work last October and there were about 125 people in the room. As I walked down the aisle after receiving the award, there were people on the left and right greeting me. a couple folks I didn’t get to because my attention was divided. So I waited in the back. When the ceremony was over I went to the three folks I missed and thanked them for cheering me on blah blah.
Criticize Taylor for a middle of the road pop album (legit), but over forgetting to PUBLICLY embrace Celine—that’s beyond ridiculous to me and very reaching. We know that was not intentional. Her reaction to Celine being on the stage proves that.

I think Taylor being the subject of anger as a result of her success is very overdone and the number of people saying she's talentless speaks more on them than it does her. She definitely gets WAY too much undue criticism. The Celine snub - I mean, it's not a huge deal in the end and I'm sure all was well afterward backstage. It's a big moment and overwhelming. Not everyone has the ability to compose themselves in the moment with a million thoughts running through their head. With that said, my initial impression was that the snub speaks to a certain characteristic around having and showing respect. Some people default to their internal feelings and some people default to what's around them. Some people would have been gracious in the moment and acknowledged Celine with a hug or even a smile and thank you, while others would be wrapped up in themselves and (dare I say it) self-absorbed in the moment. I obviously don't think she had any ill intent or anything of the sort, but it might be a wake-up call that showing respect for those who came before you, even if they aren't directly in your field, is part of the environment of being a world-famous megastar.
At the end though, I think this is something else that is and will be way overblown and as I said already, if anything, this is also a wake-up call for everyone else to finally acknowledge the long-overdue recognition of Celine's status.

I guess that's the price you have to pay when you're at the level of fame like Taylor, MILLIONS of people will be paying attention to your every move and word. I understand why all this was interpreted the way it was interpreted: people have a soft spot for Celine, especially after those heartbreaking news about her health, and this was her first big appearance in a long time just to be in a shadow and completely ignored by Taylor, who is known as a kind, sweet and respectful person, especially towards older colleagues. I'm sure it was unintentional, but everyone has the right to interpret as they want and Taylor clearly gave them the material, unintentionally. Don't think this is a big deal, most people moved on when they saw the picture.

Im in a high level leadership role at my org. I know that everything I say and do is being watched. It’s annoying because I don’t believe anyone is perfect. I think you can tell a lot about someone’s character based on how they resolve moments where they were not at their best. For me, that matters a lot. And I work hard to extend that courtesy to my employees. I just think the world would be so much better right now if we extended grace. It’s hard to always know a person’s intent.

Taylor Swift had a huge year and it felt fitting to me that they would recognize her. If you feel like writing an essay about it you probably care about awards too much. This doesn't actually invalidate the huge year SZA has just like Beyonce is still Queen Bee if she never gets AOTY. Grammys are cool if you have them, but if you don't it's not a big deal. It's the same award they gave to... Harry's House for some reason. It's not a big deal overall. *stares at the essay-length post in my drafts that I didn't bother posting yesterday forlornly* Well, let me try to tl;dr this shit so nobody thinks I care too much. 25 years of being told "we should not just give awards to black women to make a balance show" because asking for even a smidgen of recognition for our talent is the equivalent of begging for token handouts in other people's minds is exhausting. 25 years of people getting so caught up in trying to excuse black women being ignored in AOTY that we never even make it to the discussion of how in that same 25-year span only three black women have won SOTY (and that's not even a performers' award so that's a whole other can of worms on its own), or how it took 29 years after Whitney's 1994 ROTY win for another black woman to win that category, is exhausting. 25 years of fandoms, traditional and social media, and even the show itself hyping up the general field so much that there's a general perception that anything outside of the GF is less prestigious (or not prestigious at all) but then gaslighting anyone upset at yet another black woman's GF losses by saying "but she wasn't robbed, she won these other categories" is exhausting. It hasn't been 25 years yet, but I'm sure we will eventually get 25 years of people intentionally bringing up Beyonce's record number of wins and nominations to dismiss complaints about her lack of an AOTY win as absurd or even narcissistic while also ignoring the above point about perceived category prestige, and I can assure you that it will be just as exhausting after 25 years as it already is right now. 25 years in which there were ten where no black woman was even nominated, but only two where no white men were nominated, four where no black men were nominated, and four where no white women were nominated, is exhausting. (side note: this stat includes groups and soundtracks.) 25 years of people on both sides making the argument about the specific artists in a given year when some of us trying to get y'all to zoom out and look at the bigger picture is exhausting. 25 years of hearing that being rendered invisible in any space is "not a big deal overall" IS FUCKING EXHAUSTING.[brief apology for waking up on the bitter side of the bed redacted because 42 years of feeling like I as a black woman need to issue a small apology for feeling whatever the fuck I'm feeling so that other people feel comfortable and non-threatened is the most exhausting thing of all, so I'm just not gonna do that shit anymore]
It was a nice show, overall though.

lol, Midnights for AOTY? It was even the best pop female album of the year. A crock. SZA deeply robbed. Swift is a great writer and businesswoman but her oversaturation is irritating and I don't even listen to radio or watch live TV.

Overall, this was definitely the best show in years just in terms of production, excitement, and actual legends being there. The Tracy Chapman moment alone was incredible, but also Joni and Billy really added the icon level.
Taylor winning AOTY is meh for me, and her announcing the new album was so calculated. Nothing surprising though, this is who she is. Miley was truly great to watch, and her and Billie winning were nice surprises. It was nice to see so many women winning too, including SZA who probably should've won AOTY.
Whoever produced the show deserves an A+.
Jay-Z though getting upset that Beyonce never won AOTY? give me a f**king break. The woman has 32 GRAMMYs. Never ceases to amaze me how delusional both he and Bey are. Of COURSE 32 is not enough. Some people have zero Grammys. Just ridiculous.

And I say this as someone who did not think Midnights was the best choice for this year. I'm visibly irked about AOTY for other reasons, but out of the 25 years that I brought up, Taylor only accounts for four of them. Taylor Alison Swift having a chokehold on voters is not the problem here and 'punishing' her for winning too much is not the solution. If someone suggested making a similar limitation rule for overall wins because Beyonce already has so many, that would rightfully be called out as bullshit. I do think people eventually get tired of seeing the same person be in their faces repeatedly, but the voters will let us know when they're tired of her by not voting for her. We don't need to force her into not winning. I also think it's jumping ahead of ourselves a bit to assume so quickly that she has 2025 on lock already. At least let that album drop first and see if it's received well.

Joni Mitchell performing on the GRAMMYs for the first time in her career! Why does Joni look like Trump with a wig and a muu-muu? Anyway, overall, the Grammys were mid and predictable. I did LOVE seeing Tracy x Luke together. They both looked so happy to be performing together and there was so much love and respect. Also, I need to listen to Luke Combs apparently because the man is a VOCALIST. Very impressive. Annie Lennox also did a great job. I skipped Billy and Joni, but don't really feel I missed much. The other performances were just whatever. I think, other than the Luke x Tracy collab, my favorite was MC x MC onstage together. A) I had no idea that Miley was such a Mariah fan and B) Never in a million years did I imagine Mariah would return to the Grammys in any capacity, never mind sharing presenting duties with MILEY CYRUS. That was probably the wildest thing about last night, honestly. Well...Taylor's chaotic entrance, singing along to Olivia, and announcing a new album was also a moment. Dua's opening was dull as dishwater. She has only marginally improved as a performer and that opener was a glaring example of how, despite being massive, amateurish she appears onstage. Xtina got done dirty by being announced as a Latin Grammy Award winner, when she has won a Big Four Award, LOL. Also, I love SZA (and was rooting for her to win AOTY) but she got eaten alive by that stage. Loved her speech though. Lastly, why is U2 ripping off Call Me by Blondie now?? Mess.
