What happened? Recurrent songs are only allowed to enter the Hot 100 once they reach #50 or above. This means the song has been "reset" from recurrency and treated like a fresh single. Billboard (I think unofficially) changed their recurrent rules back in late 2022. Songs that have never charted before are allowed to debut below the top 50 now even if they are many years old. Songs that charted for like 1 week (from an album bomb for instance) are still subject to age recurrency and need to be top 50 to re-enter (case in point: low down, which only barely made it back at #50). Actually, Low Down appearing to be still subject was a coincidence, as evidenced by its subsequent weeks outside of the top 50 without a bullet. If it was actually being treated as a recurrent, it’d have been removed.

I think BB just reset its recurrency when it re-entered in that case.

According to this, the song was being carried by 4.6m streams the week before its re-entry, which would’ve been not quite enough since the sales and radio would be minimal, about 2,700 points when it would need ~3,600. I maintain that it didn’t need a reset at all.

Yeah, agreed, it's still got a long way to go until it catches up to those 3 songs in airplay. It's currently at 75.70M AI and just gained 1.27M AI yesterday. Creepin' is still at 98.14M AI and actually just gained 0.56M AI. Kill Bill is right above it at ~99M AI, while Flowers is at ~104M AI and both are pretty stable. Basically, Calm Down would need to keep growing at its current rate until mid-May to reach the summit on radio. It's definitely not certain but I can see it happening. As for Morgan Wallen, I think he will definitely grow more in airplay. He's at #8 on country radio and is rapidly crossing over. He's already at #26 on AC, #19 on HAC and #16 on Pop. The question is how much will he grow on those formats? I can see him breaking the top 10 and maybe even the top 5 on Pop but I don't know if he'll go further than that. Same for HAC and AC. He's currently at ~51M AI and I can see him reaching ~85M but I wouldn't bet on him rising further. But you really never know. I just feel Calm Down is more likely to top radio with its wider appeal on more formats. I actually do think he can make it to #1 on CHR and HAC. If Meant to Be could go Top 2 at CHR and top HAC, I don't see why Last Night couldn't, especially since it's even bigger on streaming than MTB ever was. Plus, Calm Down and Last Night could both have their turns atop the radio charts, but I agree that Calm Down would probably get there first. I can kinda see it happening too, agreed. It's just a song like Meant to Be was produced as more of a pop-leaning country-pop song and thus had much greater CHR appeal than a song like Last Night, which while also definitely being infectious and country-pop, is a bit more country-leaning. Don't get me wrong, I do think Last Night has a pretty irresistible, pop-sounding, ear-worm-y hook that CHR radio could potentially eat up. But I would still describe it as a modern country song with a pop-influenced production and a country-sounding vocal delivery. On the other hand, Meant to Be was essentially a pop song with country influences, given its clear pop instrumentation and its melodic pop hook. Of course, both songs are pretty close in the pop-country spectrum, but I feel Bebe's song leaned more towards pop radio candy, making her much more compatible with CHR/HAC stations, hence the song's great success and longevity on those formats. That said, Morgan could definitely top CHR and HAC, since Last Night is essentially an infectious country-pop song. It'll be interesting to see how everything unfolds haha.

^At least her songs were #6 and #10 in Digital Song Sales, but I doubt they did much elsewhere.

Is that a better comparison? Yeah, I'd say so. The Charlie Puth remix really helped it on Pop (#3) and HAC (#1) but its success on those formats was still impressive for a country artist. I'd say I Hope is as pop leaning as Last Night so, who knows, maybe Morgan can get a hit as big and longevous on CHR/HAC as Gabby's song.

Also, I wanted to add how happy I am for SZA going #1! So deserved for this multi-format hit. It's a great, creative song and it's just refreshing to see an R&B song achieve such success in 2023. Here's to hoping this leads to a trend of more R&B-centric songs topping the charts in the future, it's time for an R&B comeback!
As a massive fan of Tarantino's Kill Bill films, I'm just exhilarated that a song titled after the movies went #1. I'm wondering if Quentin heard the news of the song topping the charts and whether that excited him. That better prompt him to make the long-awaited Kill Bill: Volume 3 haha!!
I would have loved to see Doja Cat credited for the remix but at the same time it's nice seeing SZA getting a solo #1. Also, with the song's longevity I can kinda see it ending up as the Year-End #1. It'll face strong competition from Flowers, which is also enjoying great stability on radio, but I think it definitely stands a chance.

Yes. There is a possibility that Last Night will go #1 on the year end. It could also be Kill Bill or Flowers. At the moment, all of them have a decent chance at going #1 because there's no clear frontrunner yet.

I was gonna mention it as a contender actually. Kill Bill was technically released on December 9, 2022, with SOS's release, while Flowers was released on January 12. So, both have an advantage in terms of chart longevity, with SZA actually having the biggest one. But if Last Night truly becomes a multi-format crossover hit on Pop/HAC and achieves longevity throughout the summer and maybe beyond, it could also end up topping the YE chart.

One other thing to note is that Kill Bill’s chart run reminds me a lot of Bad Guy’s. Both debuted in the top 10 and were stuck at #2 forever before going #1. Also, most people were expecting Old Town Road to stay at #1 the week Bad Guy topped the charts, kind of like with Kill Bill and Last Night. Also Bad Guy only got one week at #1 and Kill Bill probably will only get this week too.

How about Anti-Hero? It that still in contention for YE #1? I think it'll definitely be in the YE top 5, maybe even the top 3. But given it's already down to #11, I don't see it topping the YE chart. It's at 26 weeks on the Hot 100 so far, while still being at #8 on radio and #19 on Spotify (#17 on Streaming Songs this past week). I can see it remaining in the top 20/top 25 for another ~10 weeks and in the top 50 for a further 10 weeks before the 20/50 rule, but I'm really just making assumptions here. Given its strong initial chart-run, I feel it has a placement in the YE top 5 in the bag though.

I can go back to posting the charts - I stopped because there did not appear to be any interest. I still grab all the charts weekly - happy to share Can you post the Hot Latin Songs chart? It's really valuable for my Wikipedia editing when it comes to updating discographies. :)
