Oh yeah, I agree that sales are still a relevant metric that should be taken into account, and that a stan's sales are as valuable as any other sale. My point was mostly directed at songs that, without remixes or massive fan-driven sales (both of which tend to come together), wouldn't have reached at #1.

Ever since Say So back in 2020, many of the loudest fandoms have tried (and a lot of times, succeded) to carry their favorite artists to the top with songs that just lack any significant impact on both radio and streaming, being hits driven almost entirely by massive sales (which a lot of times ended up being just acts of mass-buying by fans). As such and looking back at Taylor's history of releasing many remixes to elevate or keep her songs at the top, I think it's fair to question whether Karma would be a "deserving" #1 previous to get more info about how it has been doing so far (by "deserving" I mean a #1 hit with the three main metrics more or less balanced and contributing at the song's success).

If Karma is doing ok outside of just sales, then it's all fair game. But again, I wouldn't be too surprised if that end up being not the case.

I think there are two distinct classes of “sales-driven” number ones. Songs like Say So, Industry Baby, and Watermelon Sugar all are legit big hits that wouldn’t have gotten to number one without concerted sales efforts. Then there are pure sales led number ones like TROLLZ and Like Crazy that weren’t hits in any sense of the word. If Karma sells 50k for that extra push I think it would fit slightly between those two camps, but much closer to a Watermelon Sugar than a Like Crazy.

(Also I actually don’t think there is going to be a concerted enough buying campaign to push it to #1, I would bet it debuts at #3)

Off topic but sorta similar, I remember like mid Summer 2019 when the terrible Bieber remix of "bad guy" dropped and then like every pop station across the country switched to that version and it made my life so miserable. I loved that song and didn't have an aux in my car at that time (it was a 2001), so whenever that song would play I'd get excited and then my excitement would die when Bieber's voice came on.

I think the whole sales approach is very different when it comes to Like Crazy and some of the BTS songs from a few years back, cause with Taylor she has as strong a fanbase but also the momentum when it comes to radio and streams that keep it from losing pts.

I hope so too, but given Pop radio has peaked, while Hot AC gains could be enough to keep it from collapsing entirely, barring a major streaming boost or a radio revival, i don’t think it will get there sadly. Doesn’t help matters it’s gonna have to gain like 40 points to make the top 10.
