Taylor Swift’s New ‘Til Dawn’ Tracks Set to Make Big Chart Impact

In this week's Trending Up, the bonus tracks from Taylor Swift's latest Midnights reissue post huge numbers, while classic The Little Mermaid songs also see sizable gains. 

Welcome to Billboard Pro’s Trending Up column, where we take a closer look at the songs, artists, curiosities and trends that have caught the music industry’s attention. Some have come out of nowhere, others have taken months to catch on, and all of them could become ubiquitous in the blink of a TikTok clip.

This week: Bonus cuts from Taylor Swift’s new Midnights reissues look to shake up the charts, a new Disney musical remake leads to big gains for its classic songs and another conservative anthem puts up big sales numbers. 

Chart Supremacy’s a Relaxing Thought: Taylor Swift Eyes Major Moves With Til Dawn

How big will Midnights – The Til Dawn Edition be? Next week’s Billboard charts will reflect the full commercial response to Taylor Swift’s new edition of last year’s Midnights album, which was released last Friday (May 26) and included an Ice Spice-assisted remix of “Karma,” a “More Lana Del Rey” version of “Snow on the Beach” and the streaming debut of “Hits Different,” among other goodies for fans. Based on early streaming and sales figures, those tracks are predictably getting played by a huge audience, and could impact the Hot 100 chart in a major way if those numbers hold.

On the streaming side, “Karma” was the big winner on the Til Dawn release date, with the original version and the Ice Spice remix combining for 5.65 million U.S. official on-demand streams on Friday — a 395% uptick from the previous day, according to Luminate. “Karma” — which is up to No. 27 on the Hot 100 this week, in the chart frame prior to the release of the remix and its accompanying music video — dipped a bit over the holiday weekend, but was still raking in 2.34 million streams on Monday, which was more than double its daily average in the days leading up to the remix release. Combined with a big boost in downloads (7,400 in sales on Friday alone), “Karma” could be flexing like a gosh darn acrobat in the upper reaches of next week’s Hot 100.

Meanwhile, “Hits Different,” which was originally released on the Target-exclusive physical edition of Midnights in October, scored an even higher sales day on Friday than “Karma,” with 11,200 downloads to Swifties anxious to add the track to their digital collection. “Hits Different” also earned 3.27 million streams on Friday, with that daily number hovering a bit above 1 million streams each day over the holiday weekend. And “Snow on the Beach” kicked off the weekend with 3.76 million streams on Friday — a whopping 849% increase from the previous day — and 8,000 in sales, with its daily streams winding down to the same levels as “Hits Different” by Monday.

Although the numbers for “Hits Different” and “Snow on the Beach” are worth monitoring, all eyes are on “Karma,” which Swift performed with special guest Ice Spice at each of her MetLife Stadium shows in East Rutherford, N.J. this past weekend. In the coming weeks, “Karma” could become Swift’s second Hot 100 chart-topper from Midnights, following “Anti-Hero,” which became the superstar’s longest-running No. 1 single by logging eight weeks atop the chart. Meanwhile, Midnights could return to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, snapping the 12-week run at No. 1 of Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time. – JASON LIPSHUTZ

Little Mermaid Songs Swim to Big Gains

The new live-action Disney remake of the studio’s 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid is off to a dynamite start at the U.S. box office, with nearly $120 million reportedly raked in over its first four days of release (May 26-29). Unsurprisingly, the movie’s early ubiquity has inspired people to return to some of the timeless songs remade in the new version on streaming services, both in their newer and original incarnations.

“Part of Your World,” the Little Mermaid ballad originally sung by voice actress Jodi Benson (which Billboard‘s staff recently named the best song in Disney history) and covered by star Halle Bailey in the 2023 version, rose 71% in daily on-demand official U.S. streams from 294,000 on May 25 (the day before its release) to 503,000 on May 27 (the day after), while the Benson original was up 18% to 210,000 over that same span, according to Luminate. Meanwhile, the Daveed Diggs-led “Under the Sea” from the new version was up 125% to 208,000, and Samuel E. Wright’s 1989 rendition gained 11% to 202,000.

Are any of the 2023 version’s new Lin-Manuel Miranda-penned songs on their way to a classic status of their own? Hard to tell so far, but “The Scuttlebutt” — led by the Awkwafina-voiced Scuttle, and also featuring Diggs — seems to be off to the strongest start, with the song climbing to over 200,000 daily on-demand U.S. audio streams this week, a number that may only continue to rise as more and more kids nationwide are re-infected with Mermaid-mania. – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

Neo-Con Rappers Put a “Target” on Store’s Pride Month Display With Homophobic and Transphobic New Best-Selling Single

The No. 1 song on iTunes’ real-time chart isn’t from Taylor Swift or The Little Mermaid — but rather conservative rappers Forgiato Blow and Jimmy Levy’s new single “Boycott Target,” also featuring Nick Nittoli and Stoney Dudebro. The reactionary song takes aim at the titular megastore for its recently debuted PRIDE Collection and takes open shots at the LQBTQ community with lyrics like “You know the LGBTQ done went too far/ You know they cuttin’ these kids, they leavin’ tr—ies with scars/ Why they push an agenda, promoting with sexual genders/ I’m only rockin’ with Bruce, don’t rock with no Caitlyn Jenner.” Meanwhile, the video features the artists parading around a Target’s PRIDE section, with several of them donning a cartoonish amount of pro-USA (and/or pro-Trump) clothing and paraphernalia, and singer Jimmy Levy positing, “Inside this store, Satan resides.”

As several other conservative anthems have done in recent years, from Aaron Lewis’ “Am I the Only One?” to multiple different songs named “Let’s Go Brandon,” the song has attracted thousands in sales due to word-of-mouth and exposure via FOX News. The song grew from just over 200 in daily sales on May 25 to nearly 2,900 on May 30, despite Blow’s claims to FOX that the song had been “shadow-banned” from searches on Apple Music, and daily streams have also started to pick up, though they still remain in the modest five digits. Regardless of whether or not the consumption will be enough for “Boycott Target” to match the top 40 debuts of those previously mentioned right-wing rallying cries, its success thus far strikes a sour note for the start of Pride month. — A.U.

I realize this won't affect this chart week, but next week and the week after look like 2 chances for Madonna to have her first Hot 100 hits in 8 years.

There's also an outside chance she'd hit the top ten, which would give her top tens in 5 decades (80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, 20s). And, I *think* if she hit the top ten it would make her the oldest woman to do so? She's the same age as Kate Bush so she'd actually outdo Kate getting there with RUTH last year.

But, I'm counting chickens before they're hatched and there's a strong chance she won't make the top ten, although I think Hot 100 is a given with at least The Weeknd track.

Despite a lot of big releases this week and stabilizing with a 3.47% decreases, Ella Baila Sola stays on top for a 7th week in a row, just one week away from tying Despacito's record. It managed to stay above Last Night and All My Life, the latter of which got a boost of 10% thanks to Durk's newest album. We also have two new debuts in the Top 10, courtesy of Taylor Swift and the Til the Dawn release of Midnights. The first is Hits Different, what was formerly a Target exclusive is finally on streaming platforms and becoming the fan favorite release this week. The second is the big story of course as Taylor also released a remix of Karma with Ice Spice, getting a video, and despite the harsh negative reaction the coming few days, with streams combined, Karma managed to get a a total of 10M streams. It would be #3 if streams were combined and it should be enough to get a new peak in the Top 5 of the Hot 100.

It was a busy week all around, not just for the two albums I just mentioned which also helped boost several older songs, but also because we got Dua Lipa's comeback for the Barbie movie, as well as a new Peso Pluma song.

Morgan Wallen’s ‘Last Night’ No. 1 on Hot 100 for Ninth Week, Taylor Swift & Ice Spice’s ‘Karma’ Blasts to No. 2

Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” leads the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart for a ninth week.

Plus, Taylor Swift’s “Karma” vaults from No. 27 to No. 2 on the Hot 100. After it originally spent a week in the top 10, at No. 9, upon its debut last November (concurrent with the chart start of parent album Midnights), the song hits a new high following the May 26 release of its remix with Ice Spice, and the wide premiere of its official video May 27.

Swift achieves her milestone 25th top five Hot 100 hit. Ice Spice, now credited on “Karma” on the chart (as the remix accounts for over half the song’s consumption in the May 26-June 1 tracking week), adds both her third top 10 and top five track – and earns her highest career rank.

As previously reported, Midnights surges back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data. All charts (dated June 10, 2023) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (June 6). For all chart news, you can follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.


Wallen’s “Last Night,” released on Big Loud/Mercury/Republic Records, drew 66.3 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 1%) and 32.8 million streams (essentially even week-over-week) and sold 8,000 downloads (down 4%) in the May 26-June 1 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The song, which initially led the Hot 100 in March, becoming Wallen’s first leader on the list, notches an 11th week at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart; rises 5-4 for a new best on Radio Songs; and dips 5-6 on Digital Song Sales, following a week on top.

“Last Night” commands the Country Airplay chart for a fifth week, having become the first song to top the Hot 100 and Country Airplay simultaneously, and becomes Wallen’s first top 10 on the Pop Airplay chart. It leads the Hot Country Songs chart, which uses the same methodology as the Hot 100, for a 17th week.


Swift’s “Karma” soars 27-2 on the Hot 100. After it first logged a week in the top 10, at No. 9, in its debut frame last November (concurrent with the No. 1 Billboard 200 debut of parent album Midnights), the song hits a new Hot 100 best following the May 26 release of its remix with Ice Spice, and the wide premiere of its official video May 27 (at midnight each day). Attendees at Swift’s May 26 concert — as part of her The Eras Tour at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. — saw the clip even earlier at the show, while Ice Spice joined Swift on-stage for a live debut of the remix.

The song drew 38.4 million in airplay audience (up 15%) and 22.5 million streams (up 175%) and sold 17,000 (up 744%) May 26-June 1, as it wins top Streaming and Sales Gainer honors on the Hot 100. It bounds 50-4 on Streaming Songs; returns to Digital Song Sales at No. 2; and jumps 18-12 on Radio Songs, hitting new highs on each survey.

Swift achieves her 25th top five Hot 100 entry, solely claiming the fifth-most such hits since the chart began in August 1958.

Meanwhile, Swift boasts the sixth-most top two Hot 100 hits: 17, with nine having hit No. 1 and eight having reached No. 2. She follows The Beatles (23; 20 No. 1s, three No. 2 hits); Mariah Carey (23; 19 No. 1s, four No. 2 hits); Drake (20; 11 No. 1s, nine No. 2 hits); Rihanna (18; 14 No. 1s, four No. 2 hits); and Madonna (18; 12 No. 1s, six No. 2 hits).

Plus, Midnights has now generated three top two Hot 100 songs: “Anti-Hero” became Swift’s longest-leading No. 1, for eight weeks in November-January, and “Lavender Haze” debuted at its No. 2 peak in November, as 10 tracks from the album blanketed the top 10 in the set’s starting frame and Swift made history as the first artist to rank at each spot in the top 10 in a single week.

The album is Swift’s second to produce a trio of top two Hot 100 hits, after 1989 yielded three No. 1s in 2014-15: “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space” and “Bad Blood” (featuring Kendrick Lamar).

Midnights is the first album by any act with three top two Hot 100 hits since The Weeknd’s After Hours spun off three No. 1s in 2019-21: “Heartless,” “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears,” the lattermost remixed with Ariana Grande – who, prior to that LP, posted three top two hits, including two No. 1s, from Thank U Next in 2018-19. Earlier in 2018, Drake rung up four, including three No. 1s, from his album Scorpion.

Ice Spice is now credited on “Karma” on the Hot 100, as the remix accounts for over half the song’s consumption in the tracking week. She notches her third top 10 – and highest-charting hit – following “Boy’s a Liar, Pt. 2,” with PinkPantheress (No. 3, March), and “Princess Diana,” with Nicki Minaj (No. 4, April).

Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” descends 2-3 on the Hot 100, after eight weeks at No. 1, beginning upon its debut in January. It posts a 15th week atop Radio Songs (86.8 million in audience, down 3%).

Notably, “Flowers” ties for the third-longest reign since Radio Songs began in December 1990 – and passes Adele’s “Easy On Me” for the longest rule for a Columbia Records single.

Lil Durk’s “All My Life,” featuring J. Cole, rebounds 7-4 on the Hot 100, two weeks after it launched at No. 2. It also returns to No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs, leading each multi-metric list for a second week, as parent album Almost Healed debuts at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” retreats to No. 5 on the Hot 100, from its No. 4 high. It tops the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart for a 40th week, extending the longest reign since the ranking began over a year ago (in partnership with music festival and global brand Afro Nation).

(‘00s and aahs: despite Swift, Cyrus and Gomez having all first hit the Hot 100 in the second half of the 2000s – Cyrus in August 2006 [via her former Hannah Montana alter ego]; Swift that September; and Gomez in January 2009 – the three artists appear in the top five together for the first time this week.)

SZA’s “Kill Bill” drops 3-6 on the Hot 100, after it became her first No. 1, for a week in April. It rules the multi-metric Hot R&B Songs chart for a 24th week.

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” slides 6-7 on the Hot 100, after hitting No. 4 – the best rank ever for a regional Mexican song. It adds a ninth week at No. 1 on the multi-metric Hot Latin Songs chart.


Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” revs to a new No. 8 Hot 100 best, from No. 10, as it claims the chart’s top Airplay Gainer award for a second consecutive week (26.3 million, up 33%). (Chapman’s original version hit No. 6 in 1988.)

Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Toosii’s “Favorite Song” falls to No. 9 from its No. 5 high and Metro Boomin, The Weeknd and 21 Savage’s “Creepin’ ” backtracks 9-10, after hitting No. 3.
