"Ball and Chain" is one of the more underrated '90s country hits. Love that it got as far as it did here.

Glad to see I wasn't alone in my dislike of the massively overplayed, schmaltzy dreck that is "Love Can Build a Bridge". Honestly thought I'd have to wait longer to lose my final bottom 10.
Pleasantly surprised to see Shenandoah doing fairly well. This isn't exactly their best known crop of songs and to get all 3 in the top 50 is quite an accomplishment. Hoping for top 30 for the excellent "Ghost In This House".

Speaking of getting ugly fast, the first #1 loss of the rankdown is coming right up... I keep telling myself "If you want people to respect your opinions, you have to respect theirs". Just know when we get to Festivus, I've got a lot of problems with you people. But today, just calm respect. (also problems with myself, I did Pam Tillis dirty. Sorry Pam, if you are a Tractor.)

Happy TGIF, everyone! I won't be able to unveil anything today as I'll be heading to see Chris Stapleton and Charley Crockett later this evening right here in Austin. But to keep you all entertained, I'll be presenting one last showcase, shining a spotlight on a few more deserving honorable mentions.
These songs are a bit more eclectic, featuring some personal favorites of mine from artists like The Kentucky Headhunters, along with a classic tune from Chris LeDoux that I frequently heard on the radio growing up back home in Nebraska. You'll also discover the Roy Rogers and Clint Black duet, "Hold On Partner," a music video I always enjoyed watching on CMT during that time. Last but certainly not least, I'd be amiss if I didn't mention a song from the Pirates of the Mississippi as they hold the distinction of being the first concert I ever attended. My mom took me to see them at the local county fair in Nebraska during the summer of 1991, and it's a memory I've cherished forever.
Enjoy!

Happy Sunday, everyone! I hope you're all having a great weekend. It's time to dive back into the action, so without further ado, let's find out which song will be the first to leave the top 40, and interestingly, it includes someone's last place.

The first song to exit the top 40 also coincidentally ranks as the sixth most polarizing song. Although it received three bottom 5 rankings, including one as someone's last choice, it garnered 13 top half rankings, with three of them landing in the top 15.

"Rodeo" was released in August 1991 as the first single from Garth Brooks' third studio album, Ropin' the Wind, and peaked at number three on the country charts. Ranked as the sixth most polarizing song, this received just five rankings outside the top half, with thirteen participants in all including it somewhere within their top 50. This included a pair of top 30 rankings, one top 25 spot, and three top 15 mentions. Notably, bigd79 and gardyfan had it just outside their top 10. Despite the vocal minority, this song consistently contended in the top half throughout its entire run and was even an early top 30 contender. Good news for 🌺CountryLineDancer and taylor is terrified, as one of their bottom 5 picks exits the rankdown, and .indulgecountry finally bids farewell to his last place!

"Lord Have Mercy on a Country Boy" was released in May 1991 as the third single from the Don Williams album True Love and was his last top ten single, peaking at no. 7 on the country charts. This song surprisingly maintained a strong presence in the top half, with the majority of participants ranking it within their top 50. It even had a brief stint in the top 30 during the middle of the rankdown, thanks to its first top 10 placement by nuggie99. This was then followed by a remarkable top 3 ranking from 🌺CountryLineDancer and an almost top 5 position from gardyfan. However, its standing dipped somewhat as taylor is terrified placed it in their bottom 20, followed by a rather perplexing near-last-place ranking from Cody Wants Out.... As I previously mentioned in the reveal for "True Love," Don Williams had a significant influence on me at a young age when a friend of my mom introduced me to his music. In fact, it was this album that I was given of which I'm not embarrassed to say I know all the lyrics by heart, from beginning to end lol. It's a delightful surprise to witness this song's strong performance in this ranking, and I wouldn't have expected to see a Don Williams song contend for a spot in the top 50.

A total of twelve participants ranked this within their top 50, with one placing it in the top 15 and two others in the top 20. To my own surprise, it did accumulate a single bottom 10 ranking as well.

"Mirror, Mirror" was released in July 1991 as the second single from Diamond Rio's self-titled debut album and was a top 3 hit for them on the country charts. Although this song didn't secure any top 10 rankings, it still managed to accumulate an impressive twelve top half placements. Two of these were within the top 20, and nathanalbright even gave it a top 15 ranking. It garnered enough initial support to be considered an early top 30 contender. However, as the rankdown progressed, it gradually lost ground and received a solitary bottom 10 ranking from 🌺CountryLineDancer, followed by a second bottom 20 ranking from taylor is terrified.

"Liza Jane" was released in June 1991 as the second single from Vince Gill's album Pocket Full of Gold and reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. Although this song began outside of the top half, it quickly made its way into the top 30, even briefly approaching the top 15. Although it eventually slipped back outside the top 30 due to a single bottom 10 ranking from 🌺CountryLineDancer, it remained a consistent top 40 contender throughout its run. "Never Knew Lonely" was released in September 1990 as the fourth single from Vince Gill's album When I Call Your Name and reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. Vince Gill faces back-to-back losses, with this song departing right after "Liza Jane." Additionally, with "Pocket Full of Gold" exiting as we entered the top half, it means that all three of his songs in contention have now been eliminated. While there was a brief setback in the middle of its run, this song remained a steady top 40 contender throughout the rankdown. A total of twelve participants included it in their top half rankings. Among them, 🌺CountryLineDancer lost a top 15 ranking, and gardyfan dropped a top 20 spot. Impressively, it only received one bottom 20 ranking, coming from sabre14.

Two top 40's for Vince Gill is fairly decent performance for him, as I don't think he's particularly beloved by Pulse.
As for what misses the top 30, I'll say: "The Chill Of An Early Fall" "We Both Walk" "In A Different Light" "Down Home" "Daddy's Come Around"

“Lord Have Mercy On A Country Boy” has a fantastic melody and pleasant lyrics. Since I often listen to the Josh Turner's version (which I think was executed better), I was familiar with this song, which helped my ranking for sure.

I'm going to hold off on unveiling the top 30 for tonight. Instead, as I've done previously, I'll revisit some of the standout moments from the 1991 award shows. First up, we'll reminisce about the 25th Annual TNN/Music City News Awards, where both Ricky Van Shelton and Alan Jackson emerged as the evening's major victors.

"Rockin' Years" was released in February 1991 as the lead-off single to both Dolly Parton's album Eagle When She Flies and Ricky Van Shelton's album Backroads. The song reached the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, giving Parton her twenty-fourth number one and Shelton his eighth. The song would be Parton's last chart-topper until 2006. This song garnered consistent support in the top half, with only three participants ranking it in their bottom 30. It found favor with a majority of the group, often making appearances in or near their top 50. However, it never firmly established itself as a clear top 40 contender until the final moments. Its resurgence was due to a nearly top 10 ranking by .indulgecountry, along with numerous top 30 rankings. Notably, nathanalbright stands as the sole participant who placed this song in their top 10.
