"Small Town Saturday Night" was released in April 1991 as the first single from Hal Ketchum's debut album, Past the Point of Rescue, and reached #2 on the country charts. While this may not have initially captured everyone's attention as a potential top 5 contender, it surprisingly spent the majority of its run within that coveted tier. This achievement is attributed to the overwhelming support, as all but one participant positioned it in or close to their top 30, with several even placing it in their top 15. The next casualties in the ranking are kw9461 and sabre14, both bidding farewell to their top-ranked songs, followed by castleoblivion26, who says goodbye to his runner-up. In a surprising twist at the bottom of the list, taylor is terrified stands alone with a solitary entry in the bottom 30.

“Small Town Saturday Night” is super catchy, and I love the guitar riff.

Stats for #4:
The upcoming song began its journey as our inaugural #1 contender in the rankdown and maintained a consistent presence as a top 5 contender throughout its entire run. In a turn of events, four participants are set to lose a top 5 entry, with one unfortunate soul bidding farewell to their #1 ranking.

"Chasin' That Neon Rainbow" was released in September 1990 as the fourth single from Alan Jackson's first album, Here in the Real World. The song peaked at number 2 on the country charts, behind "I've Come to Expect It from You" by George Strait which spent five consecutive weeks atop the chart. This song kicked off our rankdown journey as the initial #1 contender, with George Strait Junkie setting the tone by placing it at the top of his list. Impressively, it maintained a steadfast presence as a top 5 contender throughout the entire rankdown. Only four participants opted not to include it in their top 30, and merely two others positioned it outside their top half. Notably, eight participants placed this within their top 10, with kw9461, nuggie99, and gardyfan elevating it to their top 5.

Stats for #3:
The following departure was not only a consistent top 10 contender but also a formidable top 5 competitor throughout its entire run. It's worth noting that this song held the distinction of being the strongest #1 contender in the latter half of the rankdown.

"Meet in the Middle" was released in February 1991 as Diamond Rio's debut single, and served as the first single to their self-titled debut album, Diamond Rio. The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts, making Diamond Rio the first country music band in history to have its debut single reach number one. This track not only held a steady position as a top 10 contender but also proved to be a formidable top 3 competitor, emerging as the most consistent #1 contender in the latter half of the rankdown. It seemed almost certain to claim the top spot until the final moments when the only two non-top 30 rankings from taylor is terrified and LBTrocks surfaced, pushing it out of the runner-up position and ultimately to the back of the top 3. The next participant to bid farewell to their top-ranked song is @nathanlbright, followed by bigd79 and 🌺CountryLineDancer, who part ways with their runner-up entries.

Expecting Diamond Rio out next and then I have no idea which of the other two will win. That almost didn't come to pass as if it hadn't been for taylor is terrified and LBTrocks, "Meet in the Middle" very likely would've been the #1 song!

In what could be considered a remarkable first, both of the top two songs of the year (make that the top three for that matter!) share the unique distinction of being debut singles and the first number one hits for their respective artists. Although these iconic tracks need no introduction, "She's in Love with the Boy" was released in March 1991 from Trisha Yearwood's self-titled debut album, marking the first of her five number ones on the country chart. On the other hand, "Brand New Man" made its debut in June 1991 as Brooks & Dunn's first single and the title track from their inaugural album. This song secured the duo their first Number One single on the country charts, making them only the second country music band in history to achieve this feat with their debut single, following in the footsteps of Diamond Rio's "Meet in the Middle" from three months earlier. "Brand New Man" emerged as a strong contender within the top 3 for a significant portion of its run, with the majority of its rankings coming from inside the top 30. Notably, bigd79 and Cody Wants Out... positioned this at the pinnacle of their lists, while I, LBTrocks, and 🌺CountryLineDancer placed it within our top 5. Interestingly, gardyfan was the sole participant who did not include this in their top half. Despite the formidable competition from "Brand New Man," "She's in Love with the Boy" stood its ground, consistently holding a top 2 position for the majority of the rankdown. Impressively, it proved to be the most unwavering #1 contender throughout the entire competition. Interestingly, Diamond Rio's "Meet in the Middle" gained momentum towards the latter half and briefly claimed the top spot, providing a noteworthy challenge. Only three participants positioned "She's in Love with the Boy" outside of their top 12, with gardyfan being the lone dissenter who placed it within his bottom 30. Aside from that, thirteen participants ranked this within their top 10, and both someguy and 🌺CountryLineDancer getting a perfect ranking as they placed it as their #1 song.

Small Town Saturday Night is fine, but it turns into a math/physics problem for me. At the time gas was a dollar a gallon and a pickup got around 15 miles to the gallon. So a dollars worth of gas at 90 miles an hour = a 10 minute ride (ignore the dead end road and gas milage suffering at high speed).
Much easier to head to the Tastee Freeze.

The right song won! Go Trisha! There were a lot of... questionable results along the way, but at least we still ended up with a great winner.

“She's in Love with the Boy” was easy choice for #1 in my list, so happy for this outcome. “Brand New Man” is also an iconic tune, and easily one of my favs from this duo, although I mostly listen to the version with Luke Combs. Maybe I have a basic taste with 90s country when it comes to selecting a #1 song, as this is the second time my #1 winning the YE RD following 1996, but I cannot see it ever happening in the recent YE RD. Thanks for hosting tim, and looking forward to the next one!

Thrilled that "Small Town Saturday Night" made it all the way to the top 5. In a year full of iconic debuts, it often gets lost in the shuffle because Hal's career stalled out, but it's equally iconic and well deserving of it's placement here. Not surprised that Trisha won, and although I do love the song, I was kind of hoping someone else could eke it out (and I certainly didn't think Diamond Rio would come the closest). Thanks to tim for hosting, you always do a great job on these. Beyond excited for 1995. 1991 was a strong year, but '95 was an absolute juggernaut (especially considering how fast the charts were moving at the time).

Great to see "She's In Love With The Boy" win. It really is one of the best country songs of all time. I would have loved to see "Fancy" finish higher, but I'm glad that it was top 10 at least. Thanks tim for hosting.

Agreed. 1995 is probably my favourite year of country music (with 1996 and 1998 right there), so very excited to see how that all plays out.

Well, now I’m glad I participated lol!!! Glad to see that I ultimately had the final say in the battle between Trisha and Diamond Rio. “Meet in the Middle” is just okay while “She’s in Love with the Boy” is one of the best, most iconic, and most recognizable country songs of all time. “Brand New Man” would have been a great winner imo too, but if it wasn’t gonna be Reba with “Fancy,” I’m happy that Trisha pulled it off. Thanks for hosting tim and I certainly look forward to 1995!
