I don’t know why you guys are so confused about Last Night being number 1. Have you ever thought that it’s because people genuinely enjoy the song? I hope Morgan stays at number 1 for many more weeks just to see this place implode.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, if acts stopped selling digital on their sites, that must mean something is up. Just thought it would be something Billboard would publicly say, as it's posted about other changes/halts to practices counting.

I think most of the people who are confused are just confused because it doesn’t dominate the social landscape like different long-running number ones in the past. I have no doubt people enjoy it, I just was sharing that it proves how I live in somewhat of a bubble so far away from that kind of music that it’s wild to me that I haven’t heard a 13-week-and-counting number 1. I think most people realize it’s not that deep lol no need to implode.

Many country or rural audiences probably never heard massive #1 hits like good 4 u, drivers license, Panda, The Box, One Dance, etc
Last Night is the reverse of those happening now, I guess
It takes a certain type of #1 hit to permeate all audiences, like Old Town Road

It seems like in the last 2 days of the tracking week, Vampire gained streams while Last Night lost streams, so Olivia might be safe with the #1, no guarantees though as it might come down to the radio gap.

The overwhelming majority of the GP treats music as background or maybe tied to an event or other media (movie, tv series, etc.)
A sobering example was last month when I was in a training for the Taylor Swift shows. The two HR folks - a gay man in his 40s and a woman in her 20s - both said they weren't familiar with Taylor's music. He said: 'I've probably heard some of her music over the years, but I couldn't name one song of the top of my head.' He's a rock music fan and she has no interest in music.
Oh, and as far as I know, I've yet to hear OTR and only proactively heard 3 of Olivia's singles 2 weeks ago, when I sought out the videos. I rarely listen to radio, but I have 9000+ songs on Spotify that I continually update with new music from multiple genres.

Last Night has led streaming songs for 15 weeks, I'd say that implies it isn't some obscure rural thing.. In fact while country has done much better on streaming of late, none of it is anywhere near the level of streams of LN. Not even half as strong for the runner ups in most cases. So it's definitely not just the country fans driving this song,
Ike any song, if you stay in your circle or silo, you won't hear them or know how big they are.

I think most people realize it’s not that deep lol no need to implode. I think part of it is the global appeal too — when a song is a 13-week #1 here, it usually is a huge international hit (like Flowers, Anti-Hero and As It Was were, for instance), so you encounter it more often on social media etc. Morgan Wallen remains a pretty local artist. He "only" has 26 million listeners on Spotify, good enough for #168 artist in the world, and his Top 5 cities are all in the US (Chicago, Minneapolis, Dallas, Atlanta and Charlotte). Actually they are all in the Midwest and the South. So while I don't think "it's just rural America," the song and Morgan are most definitely more popular in certain pockets of the country than others, and don't reach countries outside of the Anglosphere. For American pop culture, which tends to have global influence, this is an exceptional scenario of a smash hit not translating well.

They often announce such changes after the fact in the weekly top 10 recap article, so it's probably coming with this week's article.

Now why it caught on to non-Morgan fans, that one does mystify me,

This thread has been a nice throwback to 2020-2021 Pulse when every week had some sort of insane arguments lol So...There's been a lot of debate over Morgan and Olivia in this thread. It's hard to answer some of the questions we have - like whether vampire was an underperformance, whether Last Night is truly a mega-hit or is just benefitting from weak charts - without taking into account the relative strength of pop music. That's easier said than done, given we're talking about not just formula changes, but also more fundamental changes to how people consume music. But I figure we can get a pretty good approximation by looking at the strength of the median Top 10 hit across different years. Below I've compared the Songs of the Summer from 2018 to 2023, with the chart points adjusted to 2023 consumption levels. You can really see the difference between In My Feelings / Old Town Road (high but distinct peaks) vs Good 4 U / As It Was / Last Night (slooooow decline from modest peak). This is a reflection of how much listening has changed in the past few years. Streaming and radio latches onto songs forever, and it takes recurrency to eventually wipe it off the chart. Last Night is not a mega-hit in the traditional sense (its highest peak was the lowest of any of these songs), but its stability is off the charts. After declining a couple of weeks, it's essentially held around 300 for most of its run. It has to start declining once the radio starts dropping it off, but at this point in its run, its pacing better than every song except Old Town Road. Maybe a caveat for 2021 - the charts were really really strong that year. It definitely makes good 4 u look a little worse on here, just because the competition was also really strong. 2021 was kind of the exception to a trend of gradually weakening charts. I figure you can attribute it to people's eagerness for anything new and upbeat after Covid. And the raw numbers (Pts = Predicted Chart Points, 23Pts = Adjusted to 2023 consumption levels). Green = Week at #1. If you're curious about the methodology...I calculated the median chart points across all top 10 entries in June each year, and used that as a weight/multiplier. Here is how the numbers looked: 2023: 191 pts2022: 177 pts / 93% of 2023 consumption (Lowest year was 2022, which makes sense given how dead last year was) 2021: 269 pts / 141% of 2023 consumption (Highest year was 2021, which is interesting. But remember, this was the year of Olivia, LNX, Bieber, Doja, Dua Lipa) 2020: 222 pts / 116% of 2023 consumption2019: 239 pts / 125% of 2023 consumption2018: 254 pts / 133% of 2023 consumption

Awesome stuff.
As you said, it's hard to compare when methodologies have changed so much. UGC gone, and viral videos overall while having a boost, are nowhere near the huge boosts they use to be.
It would be interesting to see the strength of the songs compared to strength of the songs charting at the same time. That to me is a gue indicator of how big a song is. If a song just eyes out #1 from several competitors each week or if it greatly leads its competitors week over week.

The fact that Last Night is on track to get the most on demand streams in a year in the USA kind of debunks the idea that it’s only getting all these weeks at #1 from weak competition. It’s still a Megahit in my opinion.

I actually really like Last Night, especially melodically, but the stranglehold it has on the charts is a bit OTT, even as a fan. Plus, there are much better songs out there.

I actually gone and listen to it for the first time and…………seriously THIS is the song that will soon challenge Old Town Road? (For some reason or at least to me the guitar sounds distorted). Other than that, just another boring country-trap song made by Morgy. At least it's not as awful as "You Proof".

Most of the time getting to #1 is rarely because you are the best song out there - but about being "acceptable" to the most people.
With music being subjective someone is going to think any song is the best while someone else thinks it is trash. So the goal is to find the middle ground of acceptance that people will tolerate and play your song. Those songs go to #1.

‘Fast Car,’ Slow Turnover: Luke Combs’ Hit Is Fifth Straight Multi-Week Country Airplay No. 1 "What a great time to be in country music," says programmer Bo Matthews. "We have the rock stars right now."
BY JIM ASKERLuke Combs Luke Combs at the 58th Academy of Country Music Awards from Ford Center at The Star on May 11, 2023 in Frisco, Texas. Rich Polk for PMC LLuke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 pop hit “Fast Car” tops Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated July 15) for a second week. In the tracking week ending July 6, the song increased by 1% to 33.6 million audience impressions, according to Luminate. Combs claims his 12th Country Airplay No. 1 to dominate for more than a week, among his 16 leaders. Plus, for the first time in almost 10 years, five consecutive Country Airplay chart-toppers rule for multiple weeks. The run started with Morgan Wallen’s “Thought You Should Know,” which led for its first of three weeks on the Feb. 25-dated chart, and continued with Combs’ Going, Going, Gone” (two, March 18), Bailey Zimmerman’s “Rock and a Hard Place” (six, April 1), Wallen’s “Last Night” (eight, May 13) and now “Fast Car.” The last quintuplet of consecutive multi-week Country Airplay leaders occurred in August-October 2013, encompassing five two-week No. 1s each: Randy Houser’s “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight,” Brett Eldredge’s “Don’t Ya,” Keith Urban’s “Little Bit of Everything,” Florida Georgia Line’s “Round Here” and Jason Aldean’s “Night Train.” “I think we have a couple things happening,” KBAY San Jose, Calif., program director Bo Matthews tells Billboard about the current streak by Combs and Wallen – who have four of the last five Country Airplay No. 1s – and Zimmerman. “The pop music cycle is not strong currently, and clearly country music is the winner. Consumption is higher with country music, and programmers are being smart, playing what their listeners want and embracing new country stars. What a great time to be in country music. We have the rock stars right now.” “Country music is in such a good place right now,” echoes Cumulus Media vp of programming Charlie Cook. “The passion for the music is high and with tour season in full swing, fans are connecting with the acts and loving the music. Those one-week No. 1s are often [heavily driven by label promotion]. I like seeing songs finding their way to the top of the chart and settling in for more than one week.”

But seriously, what makes LN worthy of spending 13 weeks at #1? The only reasons are the lack of competition and country fans migrating to streaming services. There is no key element that makes LN stand out from the rest.

As expected, this week was chaotic with a huge album and a blockbuster comeback single. And indeed debuting at #1 with a strong lead: vampire by Olivia Rodrigo. It might not be as strong or as dominant as people were expecting but it's still #1 by a large gap and will be number for the next couple of weeks. But that wasn't the only big release as after months of hype and delays, Lil Uzi Vert finally dropped Pink Tape, notching three debuts in the Top 10 with Flooded the Face, Endless Fashion, and Suicide Doors and being the second biggest debut for albums released in 2023. It did lead to songs falling in positions as well they all dropped 2 spots, Cruel Summer, fukumean, and Fast Car each gained 18.78%, 18.13%, and 9.96% respectively In fact it seems that while the Uzi album may have led to songs dropping, a ton of songs actually gained from people going back to streaming. Biggest of all was Just Wanna Rock rebounding huge by 51.25%. Independence Day also saw the boosts and returns for songs like Party in the U.S.A. and Chicken Fried, as well as other classic rock/boomer anthems. It wasn't all good news however, especially for the top 10 debuts last week. Barbie World fell to #18 dropping 17.57% and Oh U Went crashed hard, falling out of the Top 50 entirely and with a 40.90% plummet in streams. Notable Gains:Just Wanna Rock - 51% Fortunate Son - 28% Cruel Summer - 19% fukumean - 18% When It Rains It Pours - 16% Dreams - 12% Mr. Brightside - 12% Dancin' in the Country - 11% Fast Car -10% El Azul - 10%
