I think radio’s just dead at this rate, cuz why the hell are they overplaying “Creepin”, “Flowers”, “Calm Down”, “Kill Bill”, “Sure Thing” each month when new adds are sitting there.

ugh, the top ten is so close to being good, but then Morgan is still at the top (I would take Luke or Taylor beating him) and SZA is barely outside.

I still don’t understand why songs peak on radio like 3+ months after they peak on streaming. I get that airplay takes time to build but it shouldn’t be this slow. Calm Down is a great summer song but should’ve been getting 100m radio in March when the streaming was strong. Then songs like Snooze peak top 10 in streaming and radio but 6 months apart and only peak at 11 overall.

This week was surprisingly more eventful than expected.

Let's start with the Top 10 where fukumean goes back to #1 for a third week in total. It does seem like the song has peaked as it fell by 4.83%. It was more than enough to pass by MELTDOWNL, which managed to stay in the Top 5 the whole week despite dropping 39.38% in streams. But both songs need to look out for Cruel Summer which continues to rise, being up 8.26% . Given how UTOPIA fell out of the Top 20 this week, it's fitting many songs came back into the Top 10, even if most were down in streams. We do have a new entry as Doja Cat's second single this era and the one getting a serious radio push - Paint the Town Red - debuted with 6.85M. The only other song from UTOPIA to stay in the Top 10 was FE!N, and even that fell by 48.87%. The rest of the album did drop by 59.7%, it still earned a respectable 70.602M streams this week.

The big story this week - as it's been for many weeks this year - is Taylor Swift. I don't know what caused it precisely as her catalog streams were up before her big announcement but a ton of Taylor's songs gained big this week. The biggest of course came following the announcement of 1989 (Taylor's Version) as Style and Blank Space reached new peaks, increasing 26.99% and 22.15% respectively. Jelly Roll’s ‘Need a Favor’ Is 6th Straight Multi-Week Country Airplay No. 1: ‘Radio Is Reflecting Demand’
For the first time since 2006-07, six consecutive songs have led Country Airplay for multiple weeks each. Two programmers give insights as to why.

JJelly Roll’s “Need a Favor” leads Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Aug. 19) for a second week. His second No. 1, following “Son of a Sinner” for a week in January, drew 32.8 million impressions (down less than 1%) Aug. 4-10, according to Luminate.

For the first time since 2006-07, six consecutive songs have led Country Airplay for multiple weeks each, starting in February with Morgan Wallen’s “Thought You Should Know” (three weeks) and continuing with Luke Combs’ “Going, Going, Gone” (two), Bailey Zimmerman’s “Rock and a Hard Place” (six); Wallen’s “Last Night” (eight); Combs’ “Fast Car” (five); and “Favor” (two).

The last run of six such leaders began in December 2006 with Sugarland’s “Want To” and ran through March 2007, via Kenny Chesney’s “Beer in Mexico.”


So why now, 16 years later? Streaming – where country has surged this year – is key, say programmers.

“It’s clear that massive hits recently have been and continue to be massively consumed. Listeners want to hear them a lot and aren’t tired of them at all,” muses Audacy vp of programming Tim Roberts. “Fans are consuming these artists and songs, with [multiple] cuts from each of them getting streamed [and] being requested, and radio is reflecting that demand. Thus, the crossover onto pop, as we’ve also seen.”

“Mostly what I want from the chart is real data,” says Pamal Broadcasting vp of programming Kevin Callahan. “If a song deserves a multi-week No. 1, then it should have one. It raises the bar for great music. I’m also seeing the chart being more representative of what we see in research, with hit songs hanging out a lot longer. That makes the chart more in line with our listeners’ expectations. We want our format to have longevity, and for that to happen we want as many chart-toppers to also be audience favorites that transition into library cuts and songs on the radio for years to come.”
