Billboard Hot 100: 09/02/2023

Billboard counts 1,153 #1s on the Hot 100 (“Poor Little Fool” through “Rich Men North of Richmond”). Not that anyone asked or cares, but I have 1,169 on my chronological Hot 100 #1s playlist, as I include:

“The Twist” twice
“All I Want for Christmas is You” four times
Ten double A-side #1s
“Perfect Duet” and “Perfect” solo
“Old Town Road” and “Old Town Road Remix”

It’s funny how it’s actually harder to climb to number one rather than debut there now. The ones that climb to the top without remixes/ sales campaigns are generally massive hits. In the past 12 months only Bad Habit and Last Night climbed without a push or debut. Even other organically big hits like Unholy and Kill Bill still needed a push to reach #1 while any random Drake single could debut at the top no problem.

Sadly, this is the current state of the industry and the fundamental problem of having a weekly chart of only data from that week in said current state. A #1 just doesn't mean the same thing it used to. Instead of a #1 being a massive hit, it's pretty much just showcasing the flavor of the week and who has the largest rabid stanbase. Makes the title infinitely less meaningful.

But it's not the end of the world. We just need to adjust our focus of what constitutes a substantial hit when looking at chart stats from this era. The full run becomes more important than the peak, which actually aligns the Hot 100 up more with the Billboard 200 and even the box office than it ever has before.

Idk if this has been mentioned yet but I think another reason RMNOR has been doing so well outside of appealing to the conservative demographic is that conservatives in general don't have a lot of options for outwardly conservative music. Like there's no shortage of music wish messages of talk about being pro equal rights for LGBT and POC, asking for climate action, highlighting corruption amongst police, being pro-choice, talking about the wealthgap and grind culture, etc. And another thing is that there's a wide variety of music: you can wide various alternative, rock, pop, country, singer-songwriter, even electronic acts with similar messaging.

Meanwhile, your choices for openly conservative musicians are Kid Rock, John Rich, Jason Aldean, Aaron Lewis, and grifters like Tom Mac. Acts like Morgan Wallen don't (and are smart enough) not to make music that talks about their politics. Thus, a lot conservative audiences are much more concentrated to certain acts. It's the same reason Devout Christian movies do well or why Fox News and other associated programming gets high ratings, there's not a lot alternative sources to satisfy the market. Not saying that's a bad thing (y'all can probably infer my own feelings towards this), just an observation.

Excellent responses to my questions so far, everyone. Let's make things more interesting.

- 214 top-five debuts from 427 top-ten debuts means that about half of all top-ten debuts also ended up in the top five. How many of those top-five debuts ended up being number one debuts?

- eagle27 raises a good point. So far, no top-ten debut in 2023 has surpassed its initial debut position (this excludes number one debuts of course...).
Is this the first such occurrence in Hot 100 history since top-ten debuts became commonplace circa 2008? Will this trend continue?

The only two people that could possibly make for a huge moment collab would be Adele and Taylor, but I wouldn't exactly call either of those industry shaking since we've been expecting those to happen at some point for like a decade now. Also hard pressed to think of either of those as "never done before." Never collabed, sure, but pop and rap converge quite often. And any other genre combo with rap has been done successfully before too.

If Drake really does drop on Friday, it does seem like "Cruel Summer" may have missed its shot, which I am surprised/wrong about. It will be kind of wild that for all of Swift's success over the past year, she will 'only' have one #1 song to show for it (though honestly the album sales are more impressive and lucrative in most ways). It's also kind pretty cool IMO to have a big hit that was basically entirely organic - took off on its own, never had a video, and never had any real push (an iTunes discount is the bare minimum and doesn't do much anyway). Perhaps it will still get a push this current chart week or in two weeks, but I'm betting not. At this point it can remain one of the biggest album tracks of all-time, essentially.

ok ok point taken 😂😂 however, Taylor’s only competition is herself right now .. nobody even comes remotely close . I guess what I should have said is “Taylor can afford to let a number 1 here or there go because she knows she will be smashing plenty more records in a few weeks and beyond ” .. I don’t think she’s losing sleep over Karma or CS not going number 1
