that's only because Worgan Marllen was clogging up the top spot with his quadruple album this year.  there were plenty of 60-70k #1s, even 50k #1s last few years. and we know for a fact the swifties will buy up all the 100k copies of each ten. she released a special variant of Folklore with 115k copies supplied only to record stores (not available online)  and sold out in like 4 days; so as long as her team could find a period where the units are lower than 100k and no new albums are announced, she can pull it off within a week or two's notice.

It's not likely it would ever spend more than 5 weeks at #1 in any one year, since there are never more than 5 weeks in between Thanksgiving and Christmas (the case this year), and it has not reached any higher than #5 the week before Thanksgiving (which it did last year). Unless it continues to experience a massive surge in popularity and somehow reaches #1 the week before Thanksgiving.

Yeah but that's a pretty big thing to take out, it was a very recent substantial hit that put them towards the forefront of the pop culture conversation again. That along with Charli definitely not being a nobody and having a minor top 40 pop hit from Barbie recently, I just think the chemistry of the two of them together, it's not at all unreasonable to expect it to have possibly made some noise.

The Hot 100 is obviously a lot different now than it was during the 80s and 90s, and it's absolutely more of a game than ever, where EVERYONE (industry and fans) is an active player with inside information. It's also increasingly become all about peaks and quantity, and doing all of the things to maximize chart presence. 

Taylor has a lot of people on her team (labels and fans) and is simply doing what makes sense to... get this... maximize her chart presence.  And gets dogged for it, as other chart juggernauts have in the past.  Meanwhile, most other artists today are doing the same, but with less success because they just don't have the same team or quantity of players on their side. 

It's like telling a record-breaking star quarterback to back down and not play so well - and let the other team win for once.

That's just not how it works. Certainly not in an increasingly chart-obsessed industry.

But here some of us are, insinuating that the biggest female chart presence in decades should stop playing her cards so well, because somehow it's "embarrassing" or whatever. As other artists and labels are taking notes, and trying, realizing that it takes more than just "tactics" to do what Taylor's doing. She gives a lot to her fans, and they support her, or vice versa. It's a full circle that is in overdrive right now. It won't last forever, but it's pretty awesome.

It's too bad chart fans can't sit back and enjoy history unfolding and be happy for/celebrate the accomplishments of today's titans.  Comparing today's records to those from decades ago is not apples to apples, but it's still incredible.  Some of us really don't like seeing people win, and the more they win, the less likable they become. Unless we're a fan. Then it's game on.
