38. Mentirosa - Mellow Man Ace

Born in Cuba and raised in Los Angeles, Ulpiano Reyes released his debut album Escape From Havana in 1989. The single "Mentirosa", which means "Liar" in Spanish, was released in 1990, peaking at #15 on the rap chart, #60 on the R&B chart, and #14 on the Hot 100. It samples two Santana songs, "No One To Depend On" and "Evil Ways", which landed him in some trouble as the samples were used without permission and Santana wasn't paid royalties before recording or releasing the song.

Fun fact: Mellow Man Ace's brother is Sen-Dog, best known as a member of the group Cypress Hill.

Formed in Miami, City Girls consists of Yung Miami (Caresha Brownlee) and JT (Jatavia Johnson). They had their biggest hit in 2019 with "Act Up". Co-written by Lil Yachty, it peaked at #11 on the R&B/Hip Hop chart and #26 on the Hot 100. It's been sampled in "Hot Girl Summer" by Megan Thee Stallion and "Midnight Hour" by Skrillex, Boys Noize, and Ty Dolla $ign. JT does not appear in the music video as she was serving time in prison for aggravated identity theft.

36. Jesus Muzik - Lecrae

Born in Houston and raised in Denver and San Diego, Lecrae Moore started out as a drug dealer. He was arrested for drug possession, but the officer let him go after discovering his Bible and made him promise to change his ways. Lecrae would then enter rehab and turn his life to God, co-founding Reach Records and releasing his debut album in 2004. His 2006 single "Jesus Muzik" is from his second album After The Music Stops. Featuring fellow Christian rapper Tryp Lee, it received a Dove Award nomination for Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song Of The Year.

40. Love Scars - Trippie Redd: Lol I got so scared when I saw a song with two Top 5s and 5 Bottom 5s that I was thinking this could have been one of my Top 5s. But very glad it's one of my bottom 5s - my #47. Never heard of this rapper before and did not care for this song at all, hence the low ranking.

39. Money (Dollar Bill Y'all) - Jimmy Spicer: Aww nooo, I'm a bit sad to lose my #21 but it's not a terrible loss, especially as I lost a higher ranked song. I did enjoy this one so wish it could have been a little higher.

38. Mentirosa - Mellow Man Ace: Ooh this was my #28. This was fine but I don't really remember it right now.

37. Act Up - City Girls: Aww City Girls are fun and I liked this well enough to give it a #22 ranking. Not one of my very favorites from them but wish it could have done a little better.

Formed in NYC, Jungle Brothers consists of Mike Gee (Michael Small), Afrika Baby Bam (Nathaniel Hall), and DJ Sammy B (Sammy Burwell). Their debut album Straight Out The Jungle was released in 1988. They had their first charted single the following year with "I'll House You", which reached #16 on the rap chart. Their success helped pave the way for the Native Tongues collective which included De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, and Monie Love.

34. Fresh Is The Word - Mantronix

Mantronix was formed in NYC by DJ Kurtis Mantronik (Kurtis el Khaleel) and MC Tee (Touré Embden). They released their debut single "Fresh Is The Word" in 1985. It peaked at #16 on the dance sales chart, bringing together a blend of electro and classic hip hop.

Later members of Mantronix included Bryce Wilson, who would later form Groove Theory with Amel Larrieux.

33. First Day Out - Tee Grizzley

Born and raised in Detroit, Terry Wallace Jr. started out in middle school as a member of the group All Stars Ball Hard, taking on the name ASBH Tee. While attending college at Michigan State University, he and a friend began robbing other student dorms, stealing $20,000 in money and electronics. They were arrested, but released pending the investigation. Wallace fled the state to Kentucky, where he was arrested following an attempted robbery. He was sentenced to nine months for that robbery, and sentenced to 18 months to 15 years for the robberies at Michigan State.

Following his release from prison in 2016, Wallace took on the name Tee Grizzley and released his debut single "First Day Out". It peaked at #13 on the rap chart and #18 on the R&B/Hip Hop chart, and went viral when it was used in a workout video by LeBron James. The success helped him land a deal with 300 Entertainment and Atlantic Records.

Born in Brooklyn, Niatia Kirkland was first noticed after appearing on the remix of Avril Lavigne's hit "Girlfriend". She signed with Jive Records, and in 2007 released her debut single "Lip Gloss". It peaked at #16 on the rap chart, #36 on the R&B chart, and #10 on the Hot 100. Samples "Roxanne's Revenge" by Roxanne Shante.

Lil Mama would later play Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes in the VH1 biopic CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story.

35. I'll House You - Jungle Brothers: I don't really remember this song right now but with this being my #27, I guess it was okay/just fine for me but not a standout. The rankings for this seem middle of the road - nothing too bad but nothing too good, so the 8th lowest SD makes sense.

34. Fresh Is The Word - Mantronix: With this being my #39, I'm fine with this showing up now.

33. First Day Out - Tee Grizzley: Ugh I feel bad that I suddenly can't remember these songs I ranked in the middle of my rankings. But I see this is my #25, so I would have liked for this to make a ltitle higher but not upset with this showing up here.

32. Lip Gloss - Lil Mama: Ughh, well dangg... I knew my luck was going far too good and far too long in this game. :'( Ugh this is my #4 so I'm sad to see this show up right now. I've always loved this song and it's always been such a fun and catchy jam! It's also one of the few songs I love in this rankdown. Yay 🇯🇲 lucy88 🇯🇲 for also ranking this in their Top 10! I can get this song being polarizing so the 10th highest SD doesn't shock me.

31. Hustle Hard - Ace Hood: Ooh wow I thought I ranked this song higher than #38 since I do kinda recognize this. I think I like the chorus but I guess I didn't care much for the rest of the song.

I was excited to see Jungle Brothers on this list, but I was disappointed when I saw the song was "I'll House You". It's a neat little song, but a bit dated and slight. I think the group rounded into form more by Done by the Forces of Nature, and I would have ranked tracks like "Doin' Our Own Dang" and "What "U" Waitin' 4?" a lot higher.

30. We Can Freak It - Kurupt

Born in Philadelphia and raised in Los Angeles, Ricardo Brown got his start as one half of the duo Tha Dogg Pound with Daz Dillenger. Together they released the singles "New York, New York" and "Let's Play House". After the death of Tupac Shakur in 1996, Kurupt left Death Row and signed with A&M and founded the Antra imprint. In 1998 he released his solo debut album Kuruption!, which included the single "We Can Freak It". It peaked at #47 on the R&B airplay chart and #89 on the main R&B chart.

Kurupt was engaged to Foxy Brown in the late '90s, and was also engaged to Natina Reed of Blaque in the early 2000s.

29. 100 Shots - Young Dolph

Born in Chicago and raised in Memphis, Adolph Thornton Jr. first gained local attention after releasing his first mixtape. He later started his own label, Paper Route Empire. His first charted single as lead artist came in 2017 with the release of "100 Shots", which peaked at #49 on the R&B/Hip Hop chart. The song's title is a reference to an incident where his car was reportedly shot at over 100 times (no one was injured).

Young Dolph was shot and killed in 2021 at the age of 36. One of the suspects pleaded guilty to accessory after-the-fact in 2023 in exchange for his testimony against the other suspects.

Fun fact: Young Dolph was second cousins with Juice WRLD.

Brand Nubian was formed in New Rochelle, New York by Grand Puba (Maxwell Dixon), Sadat X (Derek Murphy), Lord Jamar (Lorenzo Dechalus), DJ Alamo, DJ Sincere, and DJ Stud Doogie. They released their debut album One For All in 1990. The single "Slow Down" was released in 1991, peaking at #3 on the rap chart and #63 on the R&B chart. Samples "What I Am" by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, "Let's Take It To The Stage" by Funkadelic, and "N.T." by Kool & The Gang.

DJ Stud Doogie passed away in 2021.

27. Where Dem Dollas At - Gangsta Boo

Born in Memphis, Lola Mitchell got her break as a member of Three 6 Mafia when she was just a teenager. While still a member of the group she released her solo debut album Enquiring Minds in 1998. The single "Where Dem Dollas At" features DJ Paul and Juicy J.

Gangsta Boo was found dead in front of her mother's house in January 2023. The cause of death was later revealed to be an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol.

26. Whoa! - Black Rob

Born in NYC, Robert Ross started out as a member of the group The Schizophrenics and took on the name Bacardi Rob. He gained attention appearing on Bad Boy remixes by artists like 112, Total, and Faith Evans. His biggest hit came with the release of "Whoa!" in 2000. It peaked at #8 on the rap chart, #9 on the R&B chart, and was his only solo Hot 100 entry. Samples the instrumental version of "Joy" by François Valéry.

In 2006 Black Rob was sentenced to seven years in jail stemming from a grand larceny charge in which he pleaded guilty to criminal possession of over $6000 worth of stolen jewelry. He was released from prison in 2010. He passed way from cardiac arrest in 2021.

30. We Can Freak It - Kurupt: Aww noo, a bit of a tough way to start off today's set as this was my #14. :( I wasn't familiar with this song beforehand but I enjoyed it and liked it enough to place it high. Not one of my very favorites from Kurupt but still good.

29. 100 Shots - Young Dolph: Oooh interesting seeing this song getting the 3rd highest SD. I don't mind it at all, as this was my #50. Oooh wow yeah I don't remember it now but with me ranking this last, I just did not care for this at all. Yayy 🇯🇲 lucy88 🇯🇲 also ranking this last with me too!

28. Slow Down - Brand Nubian: Can't remember how this goes now, which is the case with most of these middle-ranking songs for me, but I liked it enough to give it a #23 ranking. So not mad at this showing up now.

27. Where Dem Dollas At - Gangsta Boo: With this being my #42 ranking, I don't think I cared much for this. I can hardly remember it too well right now. I'm fine with this showing up. That's really sad and tragic to hear about her death from earlier this year. :(

Whoa! - Black Rob: Omg UGH noooo, nott me losing my #1 right before the Top 25 part of the game - when those starts to get revealed next week. :'( Ugh this is such a tough way to end the reveals for me. I really was not expecting this to show up so soon and am sad it has. I really love this song and was so obsessed with this when it was out. Such a fire jam! It's fun, catchy and it just has that anthemic feel to it. I couldn't get enough of this song back then. Happy to see B-Boy and Hurricane Lee ranking this in their Top 10s too.
