Holiday music is even stronger on this week's global charts:
1/2/2024 By Gary Trust
The carol crowns the Global 200 for an unprecedented 18th week and Global Excl. U.S. for a record-tying 13th frame.
Mariah Careyβs βAll I Want for Christmas Is Youβ adds a record-extending 18th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart (dated Jan. 6, 2024). The Yuletide classic, from 1994, also tops the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for a record-tying 13th week.
Not only are the entire top 10 of both tallies adorned with festive songs, but the top 19 titles on the Global 200 are holiday tracks, while the full top 20 on Global Excl. U.S. are seasonal songs. Those totals mark the most holiday hits from the summit on down since the surveys began in 2020; previously, the Global 200βs top 10 and the Global Excl. U.S. chartβs top seven songs were all-holiday on the rankings dated a year ago this week (Jan. 7, 2023).
The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.
Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the chartsβ calculations.
Carey Wraps Up βChristmasβ Season Atop Global 200
Careyβs βAll I Want for Christmas Is Youβ leads the Global 200 for a fifth consecutive week, with 159 million streams (up 38%) β the songβs biggest global streaming week since the chart began β and 13,000 sold (up 9%) worldwide in the Dec. 22-28 tracking week (thus, encompassing four days leading up to and including Christmas Day).
The song spends a record-extending 18th week at No. 1 on the Global 200, following four frames in both the 2020 and 2021 holiday seasons and five frames over last yearβs holidays.
The rest of the Global 200βs top five remains in place from a week earlier: Wham!βs βLast Christmasβ at its No. 2 high; Brenda Leeβs βRockinβ Around the Christmas Treeβ at No. 3, after reaching No. 2 last holiday season; Bobby Helmsβ βJingle Bell Rockβ at its No. 4 best; and Ariana Grandeβs βSanta Tell Meβ at its No. 5 peak.
Seasonal songs light up the top 19 spots on the Global 200, with Jack Harlowβs βLovin on Meβ breaking up the holiday party at No. 20. The song, which hit No. 2 in early December, drew 45.3 million streams (down 4%) and sold 10,000 (down 3%) worldwide in the tracking week.
Careyβs βChristmasβ Ties Global Excl. U.S. No. 1 Record Careyβs βAll I Want for Christmas Is Youβ concurrently tops the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for a fifth week in a row, with 109.5 million streams (up 52%) and 6,000 sold (up 23%) outside the U.S. Dec. 22-28. The song tallies a record-tying 13th total week at No. 1, following one in the 2020 holiday season, three weeks the next year and four last season. It matches the 13-week reigns of Miley Cyrusβ βFlowersβ in 2023 and Harry Stylesβ βAs It Wasβ in 2022. (All three songs are on Columbia Records β Careyβs on Columbia/Legacy, Cyrusβ on Smiley Miley/Columbia and Stylesβ on Erskine/Columbia.) Wham!βs βLast Christmasβ holds at its No. 2 Global Excl. U.S. high; Brenda Leeβs βRockinβ Around the Christmas Treeβ keeps at its No. 3 peak; Ariana Grandeβs βSanta Tell Meβ dashes to a new No. 4 best, from No. 6; and Michael BublΓ©βs βItβs Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmasβ repeats at No. 5, after reaching No. 4 last holiday season. The entire top 20 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart consists of holiday songs, with Tate McRaeβs βGreedyβ the top nonseasonal song on the survey at No. 21. The track, which led the list for a week in early December, drew 35.4 million streams (down 8%) and sold 1,000 (down 4%) outside the U.S. in the tracking week. The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated Jan. 6, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (Jan. 3, a day later than usual due to the New Yearβs Day holiday Jan. 1). For both charts, the top 100 titles are available to all readers on Billboard.com, while the complete 200-title rankings are visible on Billboard Pro, Billboardβs subscription-based service. For all chart news, you can follow billboard and billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram. With βBlue Christmas,β Elvis Presley Charts in the Hot 100βs Top 20 for the First Time Since 1977
The song dashes to No. 18 on the latest list.
By Gary Trust
01/2/2024 Elvis Presley makes a royal return to the Billboard Hot 100βs top 20 as his classic 1957 carol βBlue Christmasβ jumps to No. 18, from No. 25, on the chart dated Jan. 6, 2024.
With the ascent, the late King of Rock and Roll appears in the Hot 100βs top 20 for the first time since the chart dated Oct. 1, 1977, when his track βWay Downβ likewise ranked at No. 18, its peak.
Presley died, at age 42, on Aug. 16, 1977.
βBlue Christmasβ becomes Presleyβs 49th top 20 Hot 100 hit, the fourth-best sum dating to the chartβs Aug. 4, 1958, start β after his 1956 commercial breakthrough. Drake leads with 133 top 20 titles, followed by Taylor Swift (85) and Lil Wayne (53).
The song ascends with 23.3 million official U.S. streams (up 15%) and 7.7 million in radio airplay audience (up 3%) Dec. 22-28 β thus, with only four days leading up to and including Christmas Day in the tracking week β according to Luminate.
Written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson, βBlue Christmasβ has hit the Hot 100 in three forms. In addition to Presleyβs, The Brownsβ version reached No. 97 in 1960 and Kane Brownβs interpretation rose to No. 73 last holiday season.
Going back to even before Presleyβs recording, Ernest Tubb sent his take on βBlue Christmasβ to No. 1 on Billboardβs Most Played Juke Box (Country & Western) Records chart over the 1949 holiday season.
Meanwhile, Presley, Chuck Berry, Nat King Cole, Perry Como and Dean Martin all rank on the latest Hot 100 with holiday titles and share the record for the longest span of appearing on the chart: 65 years and five months; that encompasses the chartβs entire existence to date, as all five legendary artists placed on the inaugural Hot 100.
As previously reported, Brenda Leeβs βRockinβ Around the Christmas Treeβ rebounds to No. 1 on the Hot 100. The fellow seasonal standard, from 1958, adds a third week at the summit, four weeks after it led for the first time. Plus, the Hot 100βs top eight titles are holiday songs for the first time ever, while nine of the top 10 are holiday hits for just the second time and a single-week-record 41 holiday songs decorate the entire chart (surpassing the 40 on the survey a year ago this week).
All charts dated Jan. 6 will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, Jan. 3.

After Christmas, Itβs Still a βCruel Summerβ for Taylor Swift on Radio The track becomes her first to top the Radio Songs chart for 10 weeks.
By Gary Trust
01/2/2024
With Christmas classics having been put back into radio stationsβ storage until December, regularly scheduled programming has resumed, with a familiar title atop Billboardβs Radio Songs chart.
Taylor Swiftβs βCruel Summerβ continues at No. 1 on the Radio Songs ranking (dated Jan. 6, 2024) for a 10th total week on top β becoming her first hit to reign for double-digit weeks. The song drew 64.6 million in all-format airplay audience, up 5%, Dec. 22-28, according to Luminate.
(Mariah Careyβs βAll I Want for Christmas Is Youβ was the top-charting seasonal hit on Radio Songs over the latest holiday season, reaching No. 17 a week ago, when 12 such songs decorated the 50-position list.)
Hereβs an updated look at Swiftβs eight Radio Songs No. 1s, ranked by most weeks spent at the summit.
Title, Weeks at No. 1, Year(s):
βCruel Summer,β 10, to date, 2023-24 βBlank Space,β six, 2014-15 βAnti-Hero,β five, 2022-23 βBad Bloodβ (feat. Kendrick Lamar), five, 2015 βShake It Off,β four, 2014 βI Knew You Were Trouble.,β four, 2013 βWildest Dreams,β two, 2015 βYou Belong With Me,β two, 2009
βCruel Summer,β which first hit No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart dated Oct. 7, 2023, was originally released on Swiftβs 2019 Republic Records album Lover. The label began promoting the song as a single last June, after Swift began performing it on her The Eras Tour, her first in which sheβs been able to spotlight songs from Lover, which was released shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
(βCruel Summer,β thus, and reflecting its mass appeal, remains atop Radio Songs in winter, after it hit No. 1 in the fall, after becoming a single last spring.)
The song also adds a new milestone on the Adult Pop Airplay chart, where it logs a 17th week at No. 1 β tying Miley Cyrusβ βFlowersβ for the longest command for a song by a woman (since the survey began in Billboardβs pages in March 1996; overall, the tracks share the sixth-longest rule, with Santanaβs βSmooth,β featuring Rob Thomas, having run up a record 25-week reign in 1999-2000).
Among other chart honors for βCruel Summer,β it became the landmark 10th of Swiftβs 11 career No. 1s on the all-genre, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100, reigning for four weeks, and her record-breaking 12th No. 1, and her longest-leading (10 weeks), on Pop Airplay.
The song ranks at No. 19 on the latest Hot 100 with top Airplay and Sales Gainer honors. In addition to its radio resurgence, it jumped by 41% to 3,000 sold in the tracking week.
All charts dated Jan. 6 will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, Jan. 3.

^Yes- it hit No. 1 on the Christmas singles chart multiple times, if I recall. "Rockin'..." hitting No. 1 for even a week was terrific- spending two additional weeks was very nice icing. It's been an... interesting season. The most baffling reactions, I guess, were the streaming "payola" claims RE "Rockin'..." going hand in hand with claims of preferential Spotify treatment. Even with "All I Want For Christmas is You"Β dominating global Spotify the whole season.Β

My only gripe is that Mariah is missing from the biggest playlist on the Spotify platform, "Christmas Classics." I think most would agree it belongs on there regardless of when it was released ... it's a classic!

I love seeing Brenda get her time on top but I do hope Mariah hits number one again this December, since she has another unique record on the line. She is the only artist ever to spend at least one week at number one in every calendar year of a decade (1990-1999), and it would be an incredible feat to accomplish it again. Especially given that it's 2 decades after she first did it!
Also something to watch for next holiday season: Bobby Helms has spent a total of 9 weeks at his number 3 peak now, and will likely surpass Real McCoy's record-setting 11 week peak at number 3.

Here's what I don't get. People were angry that Brenda achieved #1 because of playlists on Spotify and other streaming service holiday playlists. So, they're upset that Brenda benefitted from placements on these playlists - the very SAME concept that has given Mariah the advantage every December for the last 4 years. So we know both songs (and most holiday songs) benefit from this passive music listening. Both Mariah and Brenda songs are beloved holiday favourites. There's no reason to think that one "deserves" prominent placement over the other (or that either one deserves to always have top placement year after year). Both songs have achieved immense success and both are guaranteed to continue to achieve massive success every year for the foreseeable future because while both benefit from passive streaming due to playlist placement, both are also songs people look forward to hearing. So why is there such entitlement here? This is the exact correct take!! Thank you!! The take no one else is ready to hear though is that Ariana Grande has been the face of Spotifyβs βChristmas Popβ playlist and Santa Tell Me has been the first song to play EVERY YEAR. Itβs not fair, they need to switch it up, and give it to Kelly Clarkson next year lol. Or anyone else!! She hasnβt even released a full Christmas album yet! I do like the song. Just pointing out if youβre upset about Brendaβs playlisting there is a whole other situation happening with Ariana getting special treatment every single year.

I love that my favorite Christmas song from A Charlie Brown Christmas "Christmas Time Is Here" has finally reached top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. That is a treasured classic by Vince Guaraldi.
Also, it is nice seeing Jonas Brothers reach top 40 again with their holiday song Like It's Christmas.

It's been an... interesting season. The most baffling reactions, I guess, were the streaming "payola" claims RE "Rockin'..." going hand in hand with claims of preferential Spotify treatment. Even with "All I Want For Christmas is You"Β dominating global Spotify the whole season.Β How is it baffling when there was clear evidence? LMAO! Notice the playlisting and positions literally only changed for the few days that helped "RATCT" get to #1 that first week. They then all reverted. How is that not curious, at a minimum? At the very least it isn't "baffling" for people to point it out. Be serious. All "RATCT" getting these other weeks at #1 shows is that whatever preferential treatment happened wasn't necessary to start with. Personally I don't think being the first song on a playlist versus song 2 or 3 makes a real difference anyway; most people are not clicking on a playlist, listening to one song, and then stopping. They're at least going to listen to a few songs. The real difference is being near the top versus the bottom, or of course being on a playlist at all versus not being on it. The real advantage "RATCT," "Jingle Bell Rock," and more have is being on the 'Christmas Classics' playlist for songs from 1940-1980. That playlist is huge, and for an obvious reason songs like "AIWFCIY," "Last Christmas," "Underneath the Tree," and "Santa Tell Me" aren't on it. I just wish Spotify would do an equivalent playlist for newer songs. (And for whatever it's worth, "RATCT" has always been the first song on 'Christmas Classics' yet people aren't questioning that...)
