And I have never, in my entire life, been accused of being a Mariah stan. I detest that accusation. Ironically I like Madonna much more than Mariah so i don't know how to feel about the Madonna fans rejoicing and trolling this thread.

AIWFCIY is iconic and it DESERVES to break the only record left for it and i will root for it to do so until it does. Brenda right now is an inconvenience and i hope Mariah takes care of this inconvenience next year to claim her record. Her team should pull a Taylor Swift and threaten Spotify so that they can even the playing field. What boomer is even using Spotify anyways?

But the song itself isn’t about Brenda even flirting. “Rockin’” is just meant in the “party to rock music” sense that was understand contemporarily, and mistletoe is only mentioned in relation to other couples: Brenda says nothing about having someone themself. Even if they did, would it not be understood as puppy love appropriate for the age? Are early Jackson 5 songs like I Want You Back and ABC suspect on your grounds too? If so, I feel like you’re tilting at windmills significantly.

I nearly did a spit take at that post. Omg. Anyways, I think we've seen that the way the charts operate and the dynamics that underpin them tend to move slowly, but not at a completely glacial pace. Brenda got three weeks at No. 1 to Mariah's two this season. And next year, because of that Christmas Classics playlist, there's no reason to think she won't get a few more at least. But I think there's just an unpredictability to the way people consume music, the platforms that offer them and how they operate that slowly change over time and we don't know how things are going to look 2, 3, 4 or 5 years from now. Ten years ago, I don't think we'd ever thought Mariah and/or Brenda would get to No. 1. Now here we are with Mariah having gone to No. 1 5 straight years with this.

Maybe a new Spotify playlist becomes a big hit that doesn't have Rockin' on it? Maybe Spotify starts losing listeners at some point or not growing as fast as other services that maybe Mariah, or others, do better on? Maybe new ways of consuming music will start getting counted and becoming more popular? Maybe Billboard changes the chart formula? Maybe they just ban Christmas songs altogether again? So much is unpredictable. Yes, if the dynamics stay largely the same, Brenda probably gets more weeks at No. 1 next season too, but I'm not counting out some things changing that are out of everybody's control, including the artists and labels.

Promo has only helped AIWFCIY so much in the past. I think next year she should consider a Christmas Fortnite concert. Idk if those still pull numbers but I remember in the past they helped a lot

God damn this suggestion... i mean ik you want it, but do you really think she would go that far? And what’s not to say a ploy like that wouldn’t backfire on her? Hell if it does go that way, that would just solidify Brenda’s lead and will make it so that she breaks the record instead. Or if it ends with both of them losing, you might have just found a indirect way to get Jingle Bell Rock to #1! (probably exaggarating here but still)

I will give you this, i do get rooting for Mariah and AIWFCIY to take back a record that was once hers that was beaten 4 years ago. She does have a historical claim to that record, and seeing it get beaten by a meme song is disheartening (if you didn’t like that song). So even if i don’t agree, i get it. But look, will Brenda be merely an “inconvenience” when she starts getting more weeks at #1 every Christmas? Where even if Mariah retakes the record at some point she will end up surpassing her?

Here's what I don't get. People were angry that Brenda achieved #1 because of playlists on Spotify and other streaming service holiday playlists. So, they're upset that Brenda benefitted from placements on these playlists - the very SAME concept that has given Mariah the advantage every December for the last 4 years. So we know both songs (and most holiday songs) benefit from this passive music listening. Both Mariah and Brenda songs are beloved holiday favourites. There's no reason to think that one "deserves" prominent placement over the other (or that either one deserves to always have top placement year after year). Both songs have achieved immense success and both are guaranteed to continue to achieve massive success every year for the foreseeable future because while both benefit from passive streaming due to playlist placement, both are also songs people look forward to hearing. So why is there such entitlement here?

These takes are NOT it. Brenda Lee has the exact same rights to fight for #1 as Mariah does. Telling her to go sit in a corner with her eggnog and stop trying because she's getting annoying, calling her song pedophilic, calling her an inconvenience that Mariah needs to "take care of", etc. makes you sound fucking insane. There is no bad blood between her and Mariah, and Mariah's accomplishments do not mean less when Brenda is also seeing success. There is absolutely no reason to invent toxicity out of thin air.

Not to mention calling everyone "dense" is just a tactic intended to bait people into an argument, which is against the rules of this forum. Ok, WHAT is going on in here? I haven't posted much lately. You can see from my avatar that I am a Mariah fan, so of course I root for her this time of year on the charts. When RATCT went #1, I correctly assumed that All I Want would not be blocked the entire season, which it wasn't. Regardless of the hot takes in here, people still love the song, even though it's "cool" to hate it in some circles.

Also, do we even know what this week's #1 is yet? Probably premature to have meltdowns over Hot 100 predictions.

Personally, I make my own playlists using apple music and I don't tend to use any of the pre-made playlists. For what it's worth, for me, RATCT has never really even been on my radar. I mean it's fine, but I don't get the hype. Give me a Last Christmas or Underneath the Tree any day. I feel like those two songs could and should turn into the challengers as time goes on - especially UTT. Last Christmas has a totally 80s production vibe which I think holds it back a little, since it's not quite as timeless as other carols.

Just my $.02. Calm down everyone. LOL
