Can some A-listers release something already? It's so quiet and boring, and radio is still refusing to play new top songs like the mitski and noah kahan song or even I Remember Everything, I'm so tired of seeing cruel summer and snooze and last night week after week. Where's SZA??? When's Ariana coming? Are they all just waiting for the new year? I really hope we don't get ALL the new music in the same week.

^ Ariana is definitely coming soonish. Lil Nas X is also rumored to drop in January (although YMMV if he's an A-lister).
SZA is most likely coming January too, didn't she delay some AM performance to January?

When cruel summer is still charting through the summer... It's crazy to think they started promoting it as a single in June. I kind of thought it it got to #1 at all it would've been in August or September maybe, I wouldn't have guessed it'd be #1 in December lol.

It will probably get a minor resurgence next (as well as every) summer. If it can manage to stay in the top 25 from now and through then, that means it will have over 60 weeks on the charts, and if it manages to re-chart in future years and becomes a sort of mini version of All I Want For Christmas Is You for the summer, it could seriously become one of the biggest hits of all time.

Thatβs stretching it a bit. For what SHOULDβVE been the follow-up to βMeβ. I donβt think the songβs going to be returning and staying on the charts for 13 additional weeks each year, especially when we start moving out from the Eras Tour phenomenon of a year that was 2023. But then again, idk, crazier things have happened on the Hot 100.

So, on the 26th Taylor's Cruel Summer was #1 on radio with 65.50M AI on kworb, which would translate to less than 60M on Mediabase (if I'm not mistaken, Mediabase is always a bit lower than kworb, but I might be wrong). That should be lower or on par with the 60M AI of Sunroof and As It Was of October 15 & October 22, 2022, making it amongst the lowest recorded AIs for a #1 in recent times (I'm sure in the early-mid 90s there were radio #1s with lower AIs).
Basically, I wanted to ask you guys why you think there has been such a downward spiral in radio audience in the recent couple of years. Obviously, initially, Covid was to blame, as people drove less with the curfews and work-from-home, which is reflected in the sudden early 2020 dip in airplay for the #1 song (Blinding Lights dropped from its 114.6M high on May 23 to a 74.7M low by August 1, while still at #1). The AI for the #1 song then fluctuated but remained low until early 2021, reaching an all-time low for the week ending April 17 with 62.8M for Olivia's Drivers License. Thereafter, the #1's AI started slowly improving, probably reflecting the loosening of the curfews, returning to the 90M range (and even 101.2M with Adele's radio blockbuster, Easy On Me, in early 2022).
One would expect the AI of radio #1s to then remain in its pre-Covid range of the high 90 millions-low 100 millions. However, right after Adele's Easy On Me, it once again collapsed to the mid-60M range, slightly recovering in the summer with Lizzo and again in late 2022-early 2023 and especially with the monster radio smash that was Miley's Flowers, which hit an unbelievable (for today's radio climate) 107.9M on April 1. However, after Flowers, the AI has slowly dwindled back to 60M.
Why do you think that is? Covid and curfews can no longer serve as a valid explanation. I was thinking that people increasingly use Bluetooth to stream music in cars. I mean, Bluetooth has been an option in cars since at least the late 2000s but maybe people are finally switching to streaming Spotify playlists more exclusively at the expense of radio audience. Do you think AIs will keep dropping, stabilize or even increase again in the future? I sure don't want to see the radio industry completely plummeting, but we'll see!

It's all in how you tell the story, after all. But who among us even listens to radio? And if so, how frequently and how long? Radio has always been the primary driver of hits in a grander sense. Streaming hits and viral hits can and will exist going forward, but they will never have the reach that radio hits once had, so as radio continues to dwindle, so too will the number of major hits. That's why songs like "As It Was," "Blinding Lights," "Flowers" and "Cruel Summer" hang on for as long as they do.

Thatβs cuz radio is dying, we already knew that in like 2017 or so but covid sped everything up. And thank fucking god for that too, letting iHeartRadio control the entirety of Top 40 pop stations just so they can rotate the same 4 songs for 15 months was a huge mistake. Hopefully the number falls down to 30-40M so we donβt see songs like βFlowersβ or βCalm Downβ that already peaked on streaming MONTHS AGO run on the Hot 100 for 60-70 weeks.

To add to the dwindling radio conversation, there has always been wide variation in the listenership for the #1 spot, in the heighdays ranging anywhere from the low 100 millions to up to 200 million, so the fact that it fluctuates now between 60 million and 100 million or whatever isn't too surprising. Some of the top hits are just bigger than others and have wider format appeal, but yes, overall, on average, the numbers are continuing to clearly go down, and I think the two main reasons for this are the permanent effects we are still seeing from COVID (more remote work and slightly less driving) and the continued increase in streaming, and I can't see radio listenership doing anything else but continue to decline in years to come.

It's a very long standing tradition that the music industry shuts down from mid December to early January. (That doesn't fully excuse radio being slow, though, as both of those songs were making noise before the holidays.) But, yes, once Thanksgiving has passed, most artists wait until the new year to release new music. And no, it won't all be on the same week if they can help it.

^Regarding radio, it is already in its year-end mode for a few days, after a few days of being in its Christmas freeze mode.

Who are the A-listers these days? Drake, Taylor, Morgan Wallen, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Zach Bryan, Peso Pluma, Ye, Future, Bad Bunny, 21 Savage, and SZA are all debatable IMO (plus maybe Rihanna, Ariana, and other artists that haven't released in a minute). The only ones I feel super strongly about are Drake, Taylor, Wallen, and The Weeknd - the others feel marginal.

Ariana is absolutely an A-lister. She just hadn't got anything out for like 3 years compared to Taylor, Drake, and The Weeknd who all have a new project every year since 2019/2020

That's why songs like "As It Was," "Blinding Lights," "Flowers" and "Cruel Summer" hang on for as long as they do. Yeah, agreed about the number of major hits. I do feel like radio tends to introduce more songs to the public and at a more rapid succession than streaming, even if the very top echelon of the radio chart can at times be stagnant. After the ongoing rebound in the airplay of 2023's top hits thanks to the YEC countdowns, I'd like to see how 2024 unfolds in terms of AI numbers. 85la you're right about Covid having permanent effects too, remote work has generally increased with less people driving overall. That could account for some of the AI's drop. neel I do agree that radio has been very stagnant lately. So the lessening of its chart influence with the dropping AIs is actually not a bad thing, agreed.

Radio is just a scapegoat for songs lasting longer on the charts, since everyone on here loves to hate radio. The reality is that people keep streaming the same songs for long periods of time, a drastic change from the sales era when you would only buy a song once.

Water and Agora Hills projecting top 10! Thatβs what I like to see! (Extra: itβs amazing to see βI Remember Everythingβ chart stability, especially since radio for some reason (I guess cuz itβs a slow song??) wonβt push it.

^ How did Rihanna get to be #1 on that playlist? Good for her I guess.
I'm curious to hear that Tiesto remix of Barbie Girl. The funny thing is I have no idea whether it's from 1998 or whether it's from 2023 becaus Tiesto was actually already famous when Barbie Girl originally came out.
And great for Sophie Ellis-Bextor to be on the list. Murder on the Dancefloor is one of the catchiest pop songs ever and I wish it was more famous in the US,
