I think Illusion will be the hit. A sneak peek to the music video already shows how much bigger the budget value is. It also sounds more radio friendly based on the snippet imo.

Yeah, I hate everything about this. After 'Houdini' was as big of a top 10 record as it was, this should've at bare minimum scraped the top 10 too.

I swear bad actors hijacked the narrative around this era and ran with it since nearly day 1. She wasn't doing nearly as badly as the internet would have you believe, but they screamed long enough and loudly enough about floppage and turned it into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Sad to see this underperform.
As of now it’s probably my favorite out of the singles she’s released from the project so far.
However that could change because I am really liking “Illusion”.

I just didn’t get the strategy with this song.
The song is quite good IMO but previewing it with quite a great performance at the Grammys and then having it unavailable for a few weeks… why? Houdini was still reaching new heights…
And then that underwhelming video. I’d rather see an extended version of the Grammy performance visuals instead of just seeing her have breakfast with a hangover
In practical terms this may be nonexistent as Houdini is still on the charts and this one seems to be dropping like a rock. But we had Physical mistreated in FN so nothing totally new.
Anyway.
Good luck with Illusion.
I like her music and I think these songs are good additions to her repertoire. These are darker / moodier / more melancholic songs than FN

The rollout for this entire era has been just baffling. It seems the timing has been wrong at every turn. This song didn't really seem to be going anywhere, so moving on was probably for the best, though. Still disappointing because this is probably my favorite of the three we've heard so far.

Side note, I feel like this is the closest thing we've seen to an actual example of a label "pulling" a song lmao.

Houdini used a decent amount of goodwill and momentum though, particularly in the US where it did much better on radio relative to its streaming. I don't think Illusion is better than this, but this didn't really build on Houdini's success (which did perform more softly than expected) even in the UK, so I can see why they're yanking it.

I mean, the lead single hit #2 in the UK and #11 in the US. Those have historically been cursed positions with feral consequences online

Imo, the overarching issue has been how long this rollout has been going. Someone brought up her being overshadowed by Taylor, but if she launched the album in February off the Grammys, that wouldn't matter because we'd have known the clear best next single already from the reception and avoided a lot of this sloppiness. I'm not sure if the nominations for DTN made it so that she couldn't perform other material for a while, but the time spent pimping that song for awards it was never going to get would have been better spent focusing more on this album campaign, especially given how long it has been since the previous album.

I prefer Illusion to this and fine TS to be one of her worst singles overall so I think this was a pretty smart decision actually. This is doing nothing new for her catalog. I’d take a One Kiss/Hallucinate rehash (Illusion) over a Break My Heart one (this).
