She should be praying that this era ends up as huge as Prism. Or did you mean Witness? lol isn't Prism the biggest female album of 2013? With two Diamond #1 singles? lol this has grown on me, but it's still not quite as good as Houdini, and both of these are not as good as anything from FN except for "We're Good." Neither of these compare to: Physical Don't Start Now Levitating Love Again ...even Dance the Night When I initially mentioned Prism, I meant the back half of the era where everything following "Dark Horse" underperformed and seemed to erode her interest/support with radio and the general public.

Not sure if anyone feels the same, but the chorus kinda kills this song for me. The melody (which im pretty sure is an interpolation of something, but im not 100% sure what) feels stilted and kinda awkward. I think this is because the bass and her vocals are hitting the same notes and rhythm, so theres not really a groove per say. The rest of the song is fine, but i prefer houdini overall.

Birthday followed the biggest hit of her career and barely made top 20 before dropping quickly. It's why peaks alone don't tell the whole story. Prism got by on two HUGE, and I mean HUGE hits but the cracks on her career started to show.

I’d say Unconditionally and Birthday were underperformances, not flops. They both went top 20 on the Hot 100 and top 10 on CHR. When you’re comparing to two massive #1 Diamond singles, it’s gonna look like a flop but they both performed decently well and both are still remembered today. Now TIHWD, that was a flop.

Debuts at #4 in the UK, becoming her 15th Top 10 there.

I'm glad she is working with Kevin Parker, but it seems her public are not enjoying these songs. I don't think the question is "everything is sounding like FN" (and I don't agree with that), cuz even "Dance the Night" performed better.
It's such a plot twist she debuting at #4 in UK with a pop banger and Beyoncé at #1 with a country song.

I would say it's more of an issue of wasted potential and promotion. The video for this in particular just didn't server whatsoever, which has helped her in the past (she wouldn't be here without the "New Rules" video). And the promotion has been way more lowkey than anything she did for Future Nostalgia.
I'm gonna take a wild guess that the album might get pushed back a bit so they can drop another single. I'd actually say her usual late-run rebound is more likely to happen for "Houdini" (meaning this gets ignored-ish stateside), rather than this doing really well (seems like it got very lukewarm numbers so far). "Houdini" went sort of TikTok viral since the Grammys, streams keep going up slowly and radio is higher than ever for it.
Also, you know, the weird decision to announce and perform this way before the song was actually available.

I was also thinking they might push back the album…or maybe even just cancel it and let these two tracks remain non-album singles. If the lead-offs to the biggest pop star’s LP are underperforming like this, it will not only hurt the album…but will single three even be a moderate success?

Taylor hasn't dropped the lead to her album yet so I don't think the lead-offs to the biggest pop star's LP are underperforming lol.
This went top across several markets just like Houdini and Houdini has had OK legs. They just need one big hit to drop the album. Whether that's Houdini showing huge legs, this one getting a bigger push or a third single is to be seen but I wouldn't delay beyond this summer for the album.

Dua does not have a huge core fan base in the US yet so this isn’t terrible for her. Slightly below what I was expecting but Houdini is stable and simply a regression to the mean from Don’t Start Now which was an outlier. Houdini is doing objectively better than those infamous flop leads from artists with multiple hit eras and top 10 debuts so there is no reason to push the album back. She also has good odds for a post album smash since her big amount of causal fans don’t instantly listen to the whole album.

And with no active push yet, she gets an 8th Day Effect even without a splashy premiere.

I feel like it’s gonna be a long time until she gets a #1 on the Hot 100. I wonder what it is gonna take… Radio is willing to play her, they take her pretty far even when her streaming is abysmal. She just needs another "Levitating" moment where one of her songs goes viral and kicks her streaming into high gear.

As the aforementioned HITS article implied (re: 'prior to impact'), this is going for adds now, which means that its impact date is 3/5.
