Video elevated the song for me a bit, even if it's kind of similar to Lavender Haze in that it really needed a stronger emphasis and focus on some sort of plot to make it come together a bit more. Can we make Posty a bigger deal again? I can't help but love him lol I’m happy he seems like he wants to dive headfirst back into catchy pop hooks again. He’s really the best at it of any modern male artist we have.

I like the video, the black and white is striking (as is most of the artwork this era). The only scene that didn't work for me was in the lab, but everything else was very pretty.

So a commenter brought this to my attention:
"This is actually a reference to Mary Shelley’s publication of Frankenstein. Mary wrote it in 1816, but published it anonymously after her husband, Percy heavily edited it. It wasn’t until 1831 when she reclaimed her work & republished it. This is all just a huge metaphor Tay is using to say she’s doing the same thing now—reclaiming all the rights to her song. Hence TTPD—a female poet/writer who was stripped of her writing creds. Also most of the songs allude to scandals English Romantics. Heck one song is even titled So Long London—Shelley’s hometown. Loads of double entendres.
I mean look at the music video she released with Posty. She’s literally Mary Shelley & Posty is Percy Bysshe. Serpentine—the River where they found Percy’s wife Harriet. The song says she wished to K*ll her.. meaning Tay is telling that story from Mary’s POV.. Percy left his wife for Mary & the his ex wife got pregnant by him.. Next thing ya know, Mary is staying in a hotel in London & they find his pregnant ex wife’s body floating down the serpentine river—ruled it a suicide 😳"
I love her brain. Notice the Target shelves had Serpentine as a variation on the barcode stickers. lol

I was very skeptical about this being the choice for a focus track but the "I love you it's ruining my life" part has been stuck in my head for hours and the video helped to make the last minute of the song stronger so I guess I'm on board now?

I love this song, I’m surprised by the muted reactions to it.
I think it’s pretty cool and ballsy that Post has the entire bridge until they harmonize, given the whole thing about Taylor’s strong bridges, and it’s easily the best part of the song.

This era continues to bore me. I agree. I think this era is gonna filter out all the casual listeners and leave her with only the true Swifties. Don't think we'll have to worry about breaking sales records with the next album release. I'm saying this sadly, have no doubt.

At some point though (maybe after a billion dollars and already breaking almost every record there is to break multiple times) the constant one upping the previous effort has to stop. Now is as good of a time as any for that. But tbh I’ll believe it when I see it as far as TS is concerned.

wasn't crazy about this at first but it absolutely is quite the earworm. should be a decent sized hit for her albeit not to the levels of Anti-Hero/Cruel Summer, which is ok.

Yeah, but if there's an (inevitable) decline, shouldn't it be because people are over her or something, rather than due to releasing subpar material while the public is still into her? I mean, we've already been through this with Lover debuting with less than a milli. I thought she'd learned her lesson that she can not release whatever she wants, expecting the public to automatically eat it up, but I guess not...

My point is that if anyone has earned to right to “just release whatever she wants” it’s her. Regardless, whoever wants to bet against her, good luck on those odds, regardless of what the general public thinks of the material. I think her core fan base is in a very different place than it was when Lover was released. And LOL at us talking about Lover this way when it contains Cruel Summer and is now one of her most successful projects.

I personally think this song is her most quality, well done premier tracks from a new album. The album itself if very…annoying? However, a debate can be had on the simple question; Why is this all released now, not next year? This is overkill. Prediction why: “The iron is hot maximize the pay off.” Feel like this whole situation is not as eventful as it should be, also feel like the Rolling Stone 5 Star review and Paste “Total Crap Review” found below is proof people are really on the border of fatigued or ‘all-in…for a price” I think TS has officially peaked, which may never be beat in our lifetime, but here we are. www.pastemagazine.com/music/taylor-swift/taylor-swift-strikes-out-looking-on-the-tortured-poets-department

The Paste review reads as engineered rage clickbait to me, and Rolling Stone has been giving out 5 star reviews and "instant classic" labels like candy for the past couple years. Both reviews are best ignored imo lol
It's kind of become "cool" to hate her again because of how big she is once again, but like last time, it's a loud minority. I think blanket statements about how the general public have moved/are moving on are more than a bit hyperbolic.

People hated Folklore at first too for being too boring, and time has shown it’s some of her best work. This isn’t an album for the fans who want pop girl Swift, but it doesn’t make the album boring or bad.

The reaction here on Pulse to Folklore was much more positive compared to this if I remember correctly (but I know you're probably talking in general though). So many of these songs are growers which means in the long run I think more people will come around. The one thing this has against it is it's hard for an album of growers to "grow" when you have 31 songs. Not as many people may give the songs the time needed to grow. With all that said, this album is 100x better for me than Midnights (which is probably my least favorite Taylor album). Just a few listens in and my list of songs I love keeps growing. I agree with others who say putting it on shuffle is a better way to listen too.

I do like this, and I think the second half will sound good on Pop, but "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" and "My Boy Only Breaks His Favourite Toys" were definitely safer single options.

Not sure about this thought, but just gonna put it here. Anyone sense some sales manipulation on the iTunes chart?!? Yesterday at this time, this track was selling pretty much last compared to the other charts, but now it is number one?!? Maybe the video spiked that, but it just feels hinky. Almost like the label was like — NO! We want this song to debut at Number One!
It’s exactly why I wish she would have released this track a day before the rest of the album so there could have been focus.
Just a thought.

This isn’t an album for the fans who want pop girl Swift, but it doesn’t make the album boring or bad. People where though? Because there was so much positive buzz around Folklore’s initial release. People I knew who weren’t Swifties at all were coming out of the woodwork to be like “damn, she is talented.” The critical reception was instantly through the ceiling by her standards. She managed to debut #1 with a decidedly non-mainstream song, despite trying and failing so hard with pop-baiting stuff during Lover. Nah, people loved Folklore off the bat. Her Eras massive superstardom would literally be impossible without how much people loved Folklore, and it instantly changed the narrative in the public with her. The reason ttpd doesn’t have that kind of positive discourse is because so much of it is dull. Folklore is anything but dull.

Great start on airplay for the song! I can see this being a massive multi-week #1, it just gets better and better with each listen The youtube views for the video are doing great as well - 15.5 million views in 18 hours, likely going to do ~20 million in the first 24 hours. I also hope this marks the start of a comeback for Post with his next album!

Casual Taylor Swift fans found it boring and one note, for the lack of pure pop they wanted from her. It absolutely happened. Her more serious fans loved it and gave it a chance. It did grow on a lot of people though. The more casual fans still don’t consider that a top era for her, they will go towards 1989, etc.
