People where though? Because there was so much positive buzz around Folkloreβs initial release. People I knew who werenβt Swifties at all were coming out of the woodwork to be like βdamn, she is talented.β The critical reception was instantly through the ceiling by her standards. She managed to debut #1 with a decidedly non-mainstream song, despite trying and failing so hard with pop-baiting stuff during Lover. Nah, people loved Folklore off the bat. Her Eras massive superstardom would literally be impossible without how much people loved Folklore, and it instantly changed the narrative in the public with her. The reason ttpd doesnβt have that kind of positive discourse is because so much of it is dull. Folklore is anything but dull. Casual Taylor Swift fans found it boring and one note, for the lack of pure pop they wanted from her. It absolutely happened. Her more serious fans loved it and gave it a chance. It did grow on a lot of people though. The more casual fans still donβt consider that a top era for her, they will go towards 1989, etc. Considering it was peak pandemic and there wasnβt much to do, I vividly remember when Folklore dropped. And this just isnβt what the discourse looked like. I mean I guess maybe on this forum? I wasnβt around here then so I donβt know. But in the general public, it was the most buzz she had gotten since 1989 and the most overall positive discourse Iβd ever seen towards her (that still being true). Itβs the only time really that I donβt remember so many people looking for something to attack/scrutinize her for. It was just a lot of βok, she really is good at what she doesβ no buts sort of stuff.

Not sure about this thought, but just gonna put it here. Anyone sense some sales manipulation on the iTunes chart?!? Yesterday at this time, this track was selling pretty much last compared to the other charts, but now it is number one?!? Maybe the video spiked that, but it just feels hinky. Almost like the label was like β NO! We want this song to debut at Number One! Itβs exactly why I wish she would have released this track a day before the rest of the album so there could have been focus. Just a thought. Those charts aren't always accurate. Also, this happened with Anti-Hero, it took a (I believe around 2 days) for it to reach #1 because people were buying the deluxe tracks separately. The fans knew "Fortnight" was the single so I'm assuming they're going to buy it all now because they were only buying the album. It's not manipulation at all.

The video AND the radio exposure are undoubtedly driving the iTunes surge. It makes logical sense, no? Regardless, it's iTunes.... not exactly a point of label focus for artists who can (and do) dominate the streaming chart like Taylor. Last, but not least, the tracks that were above it were mostly from the 2nd half of the Anthology, which is also a logical situation because of all of those who pre-ordered the standard version downloading the additional tracks.

It was just a lot of βok, she really is good at what she doesβ no buts sort of stuff. I personally am not debating if Folklore was a great album, its one of my all time favorite albums. It did get a ton of buzz, and people who gave it a shot, loved it. It deserves all its praise. But yeah, there were tons of people around the GP who didn't like it at all. It was not the pop Taylor they wanted. These are the casual fans who don't probably buy her albums but listen to her music when a single comes out. For instance, Midnights did SO well because it had something for ALL of her fans -- it had the pop a lot of her fans wanted and it had Folklore / Evermore vibes for the fans who wanted that. While not my personal favorite album, it really cleared the board with options. As we have seen with the Vault tracks, not everything appeals to everybody. This new album will not appeal to those who wanted more pop vibes. Going way back to my original point though, it does not make this album bad or boring, it just is a 31 track album that is deep and takes time to work through.

I definitely remember the initial response to folklore being overwhelmingly positive. I think it benefited from both the surprise release and the surprise change in her usual genre. There were definitely people who didnβt like it, which was definitely accepted, it wasnβt universal by any means but in the overall general discourse I remember it as being very highly accepted.

That's the album that got me back into Taylor, at least for a while. I loved it and remembered it received a very, very good reception across the board. It's an album she definitely needed to make and arguably set the stage for her current domination. The Taylor fatigue has gotten to me over the past year, however, so I find it harder to get invested or root for her. That being said, the outro to this song is absolutely gorgeous, and the rest of the song has grown on me leaps and bounds. I can see why they picked this as a single.

I still find it to be very puzzling in terms of what I actually think of it. I actively want to listen to it, while simultaneously being unsure if I more like or dislike listening to it haha.

This is an absolute masterpiece. Some people are just mad cause they thought they were getting an album full of Cruel Summer's, Karma's, and Anti Heros. Lol This song is a gem and so pretty.

Yeah happy people are quickly coming around on this. This was an instant ear worm for me.
Plus some really scandalous lyrics β revealing she was a functioning alcohol, Joeβs infidelity β quite a statement to make.

The album needed a Cruel Summer or something to break up the monotony

I predicted this would be a grower for several so I'm happy to see people are coming around to it.
I thought the video was good. It's not the most exciting visual but it works well for the song.

The song is a snoozefest for a lead single, should have picked I can do it with a broken heart or something else... The song grew a bit on me, especially the bridge/outro is beautiful. I can see that part also going viral on social media. Just wished that part was the chorus.

Post Malone is the best part of this song, his section reminds me a little bit of something by the 1975 (probably intentional).
