Let me just say as well that this new Beyoncé song is looking to spend a healthy amount of weeks at no.1 until maybe Taylor swift releases something? Currently, it seems almost every radio format is embracing it, it’s no.1 on all digital and streaming format and there is no song out now that is looking to challenge it… I was thinking Ariana when she releases in early March but her latest song is proving that she may no longer have the same streaming sustainability as her previous work. Ariana will probably never gonna top TUN era, but yes, and? just proves that people don't care about the song - even radio stations ignore it, Timberlake's song is more interesting to them. She'll be fine if the material is there, that 2nd single needs to be fire and I hope she promotes much more. Beyonce at #1 with a country song is impressive, but I think it'd be more impressive 2-3 years ago, when it was so rare for a country song to reach the top 10, let alone #1. Also, I get why people don't find this spectacular, because this will be a #1 by Beyonce (one of the greatest and most successful musicians of all time) and not by Mickey Guyton (a black female country singer). When you're at that level of success, genres don't play a big role anymore, if Taylor wants she can score a rock, jazz, edm, rap #1, it doesn't even have to be a genre, she can record her laugh for 2 minutes and it'll debut at #1.

Beyoncé going no.1 with a country song is definitely a feat no water how some of you try to twist it. Black women specifically have been ostracized from country music for years. Even with her lemonade release (daddy lessons), the country Grammy voting committee rejected her submission as they deemed the song not country enough, even though it clearly was just based on the sound and instrumentality. Sure, the Super Bowl ad and Beyoncé being the global star that she is helps with the song doing well but at the end of the day this song as a lead was still risky given her audience and the also the gate keepers of country music (white men). She would be the first black woman to top the charts with a country song even though black people were the originators of that genre. I also think sometimes we forget that Beyoncé came out in the 90s and in 2024 is still making chart toppers and I honestly don’t see her fading anytime soon. This new album is even more anticipated than the previous one and that’s crazy to me. Black people are the originators of every single music genre that has ever existed. I don't get why country is being singled out for that. The same applies to house, dubstep, rock, jazz, disco, drum & bass, garage, etc, it's not a unique thing to country music.

Katajjaq (Inuit Throat Singing)? There’s obviously strong black influence on lots of music but this is some hotep hyperbole (big plug for Tanya Tagaq, her katajjaq music is amazing!!)

It’s being pointed out because that is the concept of the Renaissance trilogy. Each act is showcasing and reclaiming a genre that originated from black people but isn’t recognized as such today. Act 3 will likely be a rock album.

LOL everyone resorts to racism when people try to state their opinions. Beyonce going #1 with this song is not historic in any way shape or form - to me. - She has been #1 before- She is one of the biggest artists in music history- The song was massively promoted in the biggest way and seen by over 100 million people during the Super Bowl-The song, while country or not, still "feels" like Beyonce, and she has dabbled in country music a bit previously. -Many of her fans will buy it regardless, same for any super fan - they support their favorite artists and she has one of the biggest, most loyal fan bases. -Many people are curious about it because of all the promotion it received, etc. Let's see how it is doing in 5 weeks as well. Not just the initial 1-2 week of hype behind it.
It has nothing to do with racism or anything else. I love Beyonce, I even love the song. Doesn't make it historic and doesn't make me, or anyone else racist or anything else you want to call it. Stop resorting to that - it is embarrassing. I am not being racist or anything of the sort. I stated logical and reasonable facts beyond my reasoning for why the song hitting #1 was not historic. We can be mature and have discussions here without people attacking others for their personal opinions.
Thanks for your tempered and well thought-out response, however I still disagree.
Especially per the points I bolded. Yes she has been #1 before and is one of the biggest artists in history, however her ability to reach the top 10 and have major hits has been remarkably mixed, especially since the 2010s, and not just with her more heavily R&B/Hip-Hop-leaning fare, but with her more pop-promoted singles as well. She has had #1s and other top 10 credits in this time, but before Break My Soul, often only when tacked on to remixes of already existing hits (Perfect, Mi Gente, Savage, etc.). Formation was also performed during the Super Bowl and seen by over 100 million people, but still only barely reached the top 10 eventually (yes, there are caveats to this because it wasn't immediately available to most streamers and outlets, but still). So no, her fans will not automatically eat up anything she puts out, and they seem to be consuming this song because they really like it, and no matter who she is, because this will still be the very first country song to reach #1 on the Hot 100 by a black woman, a genre besides Daddy Lessons she has never touched before, it's very hard to argue it isn't at least a little historic.
