3/6/2024 By Andrew Unterberger
In this week's The Contenders, Beyoncé looks to hold off a host of challengers for the top spot on next week's Hot 100.
The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming Billboard Hot 100 dated March 16), Beyoncé’s country smash aims for a third week at No. 1, but will have its hands full fending off still-growing hits from Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign, Teddy Swims and more.
Beyoncé, “Texas Hold ‘Em” (Parkwood/Columbia/Columbia Nashville): “Texas Hold ‘Em” squeezed out a Hot 100 victory on the river last week, just holding off a hard-charging “Carnival.” It remains a strong seller, hanging at No. 2 on this week’s Digital Song Sales chart and still notching two variants in the top 10 of the current real-time iTunes chart. And it is bounding onto radio playlists nationwide – and format-wide, as it now adds Adult Alternative to Pop, R&B, Country and other radio airplay charts it is currently populating – as it leaps 43-23 on this week’s all-format Radio Songs listing.
Where “Hold ‘Em” is increasingly vulnerable, however, is on streaming. After spending the prior week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Streaming Songs listing, it slides to No. 3 this week – and on the daily charts for both Spotify and Apple Music, it’s now slipped out of the top five. If it stabilizes in the last few days of the week, its advantage in sales and rapidly growing gains on radio may still be enough to keep it a frontrunner for the Hot 100’s top spot, but if those streams continue receding, the Queen may have a shorter reign on the chart than it was looking to be just a week ago.
¥$: Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign feat. Playboi Carti & Rich the Kid, “Carnival” (YZY): Streaming consistency may be an issue for Beyoncé, but it is certainly not a problem that the “Carnival” quartet has had since the song’s debut as part of Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign’s collaborative Vultures album a little over three weeks ago. The song takes over the top spot on Streaming Songs this week, while holding strong atop both Spotify’s and Apple Music’s daily charts, appearing to be only growing stronger there in its fourth week. It also reappears on Digital Song Sales this week, returning to the No. 19 spot after falling off entirely the week before.
The question for “Carnival” may still be one of radio. Following the recent backlash against Kanye’s latest controversies — including wearing a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt and making repeated antisemitic comments (which he has since issued a public apology for in Hebrew) — as well as his departure from the major label system, support on the airwaves has been minimal for the hit single so far. Slowly but surely, however, it is growing there: top 40, rhythmic and mainstream R&B/hip-hop radio have all started taking “Carnival” for a spin – numbers that remain relatively small, but in a close race, could still be enough to make the difference.
Teddy Swims, “Lose Control” (SWIMS Int./Warner): Teddy Swims’ breakthrough hit is still hanging around the top five, dropping 3-5 this week but ranking in the top six on all three component charts: Digital Song Sales (No. 3), Streaming Songs and Radio Songs (No. 6 on each). It’s still climbing in airplay, and should get an extra boost in sales and streams this week from a slew of new variants released on Friday (March 1) — including instrumental, a cappella, sped up, slowed down and remixed versions – which are currently dotting the real-time iTunes chart, as the song’s original version (discounted to 69 cents for sale) holds atop the listing.
Benson Boone, “Beautiful Things” (Night Street/Warner): If Swims doesn’t get Warner its first No. 1 of the new year, his labelmate Benson Boone still might: Boone resumes pole position on Digital Song Sales this week, while hanging in the top five on Streaming Songs, where it’s lived for all six weeks of its release. And radio is officially coming for the song: It’s not moving quite as fast as “Texas Hold Em,” but it jumps 49-36 in its second week on Radio Songs, while lifting to No. 16 on Pop Airplay – an impressive top 40 embrace for a single that undergoes a dramatic mid-song transformation.
Jack Harlow, “Lovin on Me” (Generation Now/Atlantic): Don’t forget about Jack! His six-week No. 1 “Lovin on Me” remains a very real contender on the Hot 100 in its upcoming 17th week. On the current chart, it holds at No. 3 this frame, while spending its seventh week at No. 1 on Radio Songs and remaining top 10 on both Digital Song Sales and Streaming Songs. It’s hard to say what could still give it a boost on the Hot 100 this late in its life – though the song has still yet to receive the official remix treatment — but regardless, it remains a steady-enough performer on the chart that if its competition should ever pull up just a bit short, it could seize the crown once again with minimal effort.

Teddy Swims' Lose Control is a solid power ballad that is destined to become a longevous radio staple throughout 2024 imo. I feel like this would eventually reach #1 organically, so it saddened me when I found out in this thread that Warner is likely manipulating its ascent to the top of the charts through fraudulent sales. Regardless of whether this is the case, Lose Control will have lasting success, so it doesn't really matter. Pop, HAC and especially AC will eat this up and it should get Alternative support, as evidenced by its already considerable success on AAA. Even Rhythmic has kinda picked it up (#24 this week).
Also, wanted to ask about Taylor's Is It Over Now. A couple days back it seemed to have stalled in the mid-50M range on radio but it suddenly started rapidly gaining AI once radio started dropping Cruel Summer. Is radio simply replacing its airtime of Cruel Summer with Is It Over Now or is there another reason behind this sudden jump?

It’s a common pattern there that once a song is close to the top there will be a big push by pop radio programmers and the label to hit #1 there. Happened a few times this year.

Regardless of feelings about Carnival/Ye, what Warner Records is doing with Teddy Swims song is far more of a concern if it goes #1.
It's straight up openly making fake numbers. It is crazy if Billboard/Luminate doesn't throw those sales out and that they're even attempting this knowing the bad PR it could get when publicly exposed.

Regardless of how organic of a rise those 2 songs had, it would be delusional to think thousands of people are paying money for the instrumental and acappella versions of them. The labels are clearly buying them, and why wouldn’t they? If a few extra bands can get you a no.1 single, you do it.

I wonder if this will be similar to Gooba a few years back. Ye/6ix9ine are obviously not sympathetic figures, but both look possibly to be robbed. Hopefully Ye goes on a rant and reveals insider knowledge like 6ix9ine did. (Ironically 6ix9ine followed up being robbed with Gooba with Trollz, one of the fakest number ones ever haha)

The fact that French Montanna got so heavily filtered for obvious sales fraud makes me think something similiar will happen with Teddy this week. Which would definitely be a shame because it's a much better song that I'd rather see go Number 1.

Nobody's actually posted evidence of sales having been faked, just supposition based on the proximity of each mix to each other (which at this point has deviated while being strong across the board). If you’re thinking someone with 20K followers on social media, no fanbase, and 0 hits before this can send 7 versions of a song to top 20 on iTunes simultaneously you’re pretty much the type of person who argues anything for the sake of arguing

So when in history has an artist with no hits prior, no large fanbase, no buying campaign, and not even acknowledging the versions being released just casually charted the same song 8 times on iTunes in high positions?

So when in history has an artist with no hits prior, no large fanbase, no buying campaign, and not even acknowledging the versions being released just casually charted the same song 8 times on iTunes in high positions? Like I said, it is suspicious, I'm just saying what you said about him having no fanbase or social media presence is wrong.

with basically 0 airplay. Nothing unusual to be fair.. vitality always moves songs up the charts faster than airplay latches on. With how pop this song is it will probably latch on to radio for a long long time when it eventually does

Like I said, it is suspicious, I'm just saying what you said about him having no fanbase or social media presence is wrong. Instagram & TikTok followers are nice I guess but I focused on Twitter because that’s mainly the social media site where fanbases engage in buying parties/campaigns and spread awareness. They aren’t doing that on Instagram and TikTok. For Beyonce, BTS, Taylor, etc when they went #1 with mass buying you could easily find thousands of interactions to buy versions amongst their fanbase. He has 20k followers (and no fan pages) which indicates no real Twitter following for a sales campaign. This fanbase of his wasn’t there when the album sold 7,000 pure first week and then left the Sales chart after 1 week and never returned. So it’s a bit odd they’re in unison to buy Lose Control (Strings Version).

I'd note that SNTY has had a similar pattern of having several versions on iTunes with several versions charting consecutively. It's usually on Wednesdays, which why I thought I'd check, and Sundays for the past several weeks.
Today it's numbers: 27, 30, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 60, 63.
Totally organic! I don't even get the point of doing this 2 or 3 times a week for several weeks.

The funniest part is that, given this is happening against Kanye, you know billboard will not remove or dig into those fraudulent sales, if not they’ll buff sales for their formula just so they can block Kanye.

Even though it will probably not make any impact on the Billboard Hot 100, Laufey's Goddess is beautiful. Another new song that stood out is Norah Jones' Paradise. Her new project should get some Grammy love.
