I mean if their audience is slamming the song I can understand why country radio won't play it. Just like Urban wouldn't play an R&B infused hiphop song by Morgan Wallen that 98% of it's audience dislikes. Whether that means country audiences are racist and sexist assholes is a different discussion (but I do see way more country girlies doing their thing than, say, 15 years ago when Taylor and Carrie had to carry the entire genre on their backs). It doesn't mean that country audiences are racist and sexist. I would consider Texas Hold 'Em country, yes, but it doesn't really sound like what is played on mainstream country radio. For better or for worse, country stations are quite rigid and don't really stray much from their formula. The situation is similar to much of Zach Bryan's work (who is, of course, white and male). I would consider Bryan's music more "Americana" and country radio largely isn't playing him either.

The song is Ye's fifth leader and Ty Dolla $ign's second, as well as the first each for featured acts Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti.
Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) and Ty Dolla $ign’s “Carnival,” featuring Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti, rises to No. 1, from No. 2, on the Billboard Hot 100. The song marks Ye’s fifth leader and Ty Dolla $ign’s second, as well as the first each for Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti. Meanwhile, Ye extends his span of career Hot 100 No. 1s to over 20 years, becoming the first rap artist to achieve the feat. Ye is also the first rapper ever to have topped the Hot 100 in three distinct decades (the 2000s, ‘10s and ‘20s). The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated March 16, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, March 12. For all chart news, you can follow billboard and billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.
“Carnival,” which becomes the 1,165th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s 65-year history, drew 33.7 million streams (up 4%) and 3.9 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 85%) and sold 3,000 downloads (up 15%) in the March 1-7 tracking week, according to Luminate.
The single adds a third week atop the Streaming Songs chart and jumps 19-13 for a new high on Digital Song Sales.
The track was released Feb. 10 on Ye and Ty Dolla $ign’s collaborative album Vultures 1, on the former’s YZY label. The set, Ye’s first following a string of hate speech and antisemitic remarks, debuted at No. 1 on the Feb. 24-dated Billboard 200 chart and led for two weeks; it holds at No. 3 in its fourth week on the list.
Here’s a deeper look at the song’s ascent to the Hot 100’s summit.
Ye’s fifth No. 1, Ty Dolla $ign’s second Ye adds his fifth Hot 100 leader, as “Carnival” follows Katy Perry’s “E.T.,” on which he’s featured (five weeks at No. 1, beginning in April 2011); “Stronger” (one week, September 2007); “Gold Digger,” featuring Jamie Foxx (10 weeks, beginning in September 2005); and Twista’s “Slow Jamz,” featuring Ye and Foxx (one week, February 2004). Ye completes his quickest run to No. 1 on the Hot 100 – four weeks – passing the seven-week flight of “E.T.” Ty Dolla $ign previously topped the Hot 100 for a week in June 2018 as featured on Post Malone’s “Psycho.” Ye No. 1 after nearly 13 years Ye ends the longest break between Hot 100 No. 1s (12 years and 10 months) since Brenda Lee went a record 63 years, one month and two weeks between “I Want to Be Wanted” in 1960 and her Yuletide standard “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” this past December. Among non-holiday hits, Ye wraps the longest gap between No. 1s since Coldplay waited 13 years, three months and two weeks between “Viva La Vida” in 2008 and “My Universe,” with BTS, in 2021. Ye No. 1 in the 2000s, ‘10s & ‘20s Ye has now led the Hot 100 in the 2000s, ‘10s and ‘20s, becoming the only male to earn the honor. Overall, he joins Beyoncé, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga for the feat over the three decades. (Carey gained inclusion thanks to commands each holiday season since 2019 with her 1994 classic carol “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”) Ye is also the first rapper ever to have topped the Hot 100 in any three distinct decades. Ye’s 20-year span of No. 1s From the first week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for “Slow Jamz” through, now, the coronation of “Carnival,” Ye spans 20 years and one month of appearing atop the chart, as he becomes the first rapper to reach the 20-year milestone. Longest Spans of Hot 100 No. 1s: Brenda Lee – 63 years, five months, three weeks (July 18, 1960-Jan. 6, 2024) Mariah Carey – 33 years, four months, three weeks (Aug. 4, 1990-Dec. 30, 2023) Cher – 28 years, five months (Nov. 6, 1971-April 3, 1999) Elton John – 24 years, 11 months, one week (Feb. 3, 1973-Jan. 10, 1998) Beach Boys – 24 years, four months (July 4, 1964-Nov. 5, 1988) Michael Jackson – 22 years, 10 months, three weeks (Oct. 14, 1972-Sept. 2, 1995) Stevie Wonder – 22 years, six months (Aug. 10, 1963-Feb. 8, 1986) Rod Stewart – 22 years, four months (Oct. 2, 1971-Feb. 5, 1994) Beyoncé – 20 years, eight months (July 12, 2003-March 9, 2024) Ye – 20 years, one month (Feb. 21, 2004-March 16, 2024) Notably, “Carnival” dethrones Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” atop the Hot 100 – marking the first tradeoff at No. 1 ever among artists with over 20-year spans of leaders, excluding holiday music. (In the only other such instances, Carey, with “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and Lee, with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” swapped spots at the apex twice over the latest holidays.) No. 1 R&B/hip-hop, rap “Carnival” concurrently logs a second week week atop both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same multimetric methodology as the Hot 100. (Hot Rap Songs marks its 35th anniversary, having begun with the chart dated March 11, 1989.) ‘Lose Control’ leads rest of top 10 Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” rebounds to its No. 2 Hot 100 high, from No. 5. It also jumps 3-1 for a second week atop Digital Song Sales (26,000, up 230%, sparked by a cappella and instrumental mixes released March 1 and a “Live at the Ryman” version, with Freak Freely, released March 5, while 11 versions of the song were discounted to a 69-cent sale price during the tracking week). Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100, following six nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1, as it notches an eighth week atop the Radio Songs chart (76.5 million, down 4%). Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” is steady at No. 4 on the Hot 100, after hitting No. 3. Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” falls to No. 5 after two weeks atop the Hot 100. It leads the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart for a fourth week. Tate McRae’s “Greedy” rises 8-6 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 3. Zach Bryan’s “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves, keeps at No. 7 on the Hot 100, after it led for a week upon its debut last September. It tops the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs charts for a 28th week each. SZA’s “Snooze” bumps 9-8 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2, as it rules the multimetric Hot R&B Songs chart for a 31st week – surpassing her own “Kill Bill” for the longest command by a woman dating to the tally’s 2012 start. Doja Cat’s “Agora Hills” returns to the Hot 100’s top 10, lifting 12-9, after hitting No. 7. Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” holds at No. 10, following four nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning in October. Again, for all chart news, you can follow billboard and billboardcharts on Billboard’s social accounts, and all charts (dated March 16), including the Hot 100 in its entirety, will refresh on Billboard.com tomorrow (March 12). Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published.

Weak argument. I'll give you that Texas Hold 'Em maybe isn't being played by country radio (by and large, yet, it's still early in its chart run) because it doesn't fit in with the general sound there, but you are cherry-picking examples with this one Beyonce song and the one white male artist Zach Bryan you mention. OVERALL, I'm sure that there are countless other women and artists of color that do make music that fits in with the sound there but still aren't played, and it's clear that the vast majority of artists who are played are white men. It's been a well-known long-standing policy among country radio programmers that no more than 15% or airtime can be devoted to female songs, and while there's no official quotas for it, even less time devoted to artists of color. Whether this is the choice of radio programmers themselves or what they're doing because it's what country audiences prefer, this is quite literally racist and sexist.

The tomato salad quote was both unofficial and years ago and women have been dramatically increasing on radio since. Also, show any proof for your racism claims? Kane Brown has been killing it on airplay with mid music for years

Kane Brown has been killing it on airplay with mid music for years Here it is for you. Hard and fast, solid data from recent years (the first article on gender, the second on race): radioink.com/2024/01/04/country-radio-falls-under-more-gender-scrutiny-for-2023-charts/"The Women Of Country based their findings on data from Billboard’s 2023 Country Airplay Chart. The results showed 88.5% of the artists to top the chart were solo male artists, with only 5.75% being solo female acts. The remaining 5.75% is a gender split, with Kane and Katelyn Brown’s “Thank God.” "Dr. Watson and Diehm found that despite broader data inclusion in the Hot Country Songs chart, female artists’ songs have averaged only about 15% of charting tracks in recent years." www.tennessean.com/story/entertainment/2021/03/23/country-music-racial-disparity-study-black-artists/4714774001/"BIPOC artists received a 2.3% share of country radio airplay in the last 19 years. Nearly 96% of that share went to BIPOC men, with women receiving less than 3%." "Country radio played 11,484 songs from 2002-2020. Roughly 1% of those songs — or a total of 133 — were by Black artists." Again, you are cherry-picking by pointing out ONE of the select few artists of color who might be succeeding. And no, women do not seem to have been dramatically increasing on radio in recent years. The article on gender highlights 2023 data (at least the 88.5% statistic I quoted), obviously the most recent year available. The article on race is maybe slightly out of date, measuring the years 2002 up until 2020, but I highly doubt things have changed much in the four years since. Thus, though things might be improving a tiny bit, it is downright delusional to assert that there are somehow still no problems of sexism or racism at country radio.

Thus, though things might be improving a tiny bit, it is downright delusional to assert that there are somehow still no problems of sexism or racism at country radio. I respectfully disagree regarding the "racist" claims. The problem with pointing out that only "roughly 1% of songs ... were by black artists" is that it doesn't consider how many black artists are actually trying to make a career in country music. I would guess that for every black person who goes to Nashville looking to make it big in country music, there are probably hundreds of white people that do the same who also return home empty handed and without a career. I just don't think that many black people are interested in country music, certainly not in urban areas especially. If there are 99.5% of songs by white artists and 0.5% of songs by black artists and the black artists are being played 1% then that is actually higher than the statistics would predict. I'm very certain that there are far more white people trying to make it in country music than any other demographic but the numbers I used here are just a guess; I'm open to receiving more information. If the industry was truly as racist as you depict, then how does Kane Brown score multiple #1 country airplay hits in a row? Going further back, how does a black man like Charley Pride score 52 top 10s (including 29 #1's) from 1967-1983 if the industry is so racist? Yes those are specific "cherry picked" examples but we shouldn't have any examples if all of country music is racist. I'm sure there are a few people here and there who look at skin color when deciding who to play and not to play but the entire industry as a whole? I don't see that. The gender gap is a bit odd to me because women used to be far more represented. Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Loretta Lynn, Tanya Tucker, Tammy Wynette... all with huge careers in decades past but recently there hasn't been nearly as much success from women. Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert have dropped off lately (at least in terms of chart success) but no one really has risen to replace them. Are all current country programmers sexist or is market research showing that most country listeners just prefer male artists?

Also, wanted to ask about Taylor's Is It Over Now. A couple days back it seemed to have stalled in the mid-50M range on radio but it suddenly started rapidly gaining AI once radio started dropping Cruel Summer. Is radio simply replacing its airtime of Cruel Summer with Is It Over Now or is there another reason behind this sudden jump? Is it over now got big updates to allow it to top pop radio . It’s a common pattern there that once a song is close to the top there will be a big push by pop radio programmers and the label to hit #1 there. Happened a few times this year. Interesting, thank you! Didn't know that Pop radio had such a pattern for songs near the chart's summit. I had noticed a couple songs getting sudden updates after stalling but near the top lately but hadn't realized it was actually a thing there. Actually, I remember people commenting on Taylor's LWYMMD's sudden rise to Pop's top and its sudden collapse right after. And now that I think about it, several 2010s songs had similar sudden rises atop Pop only to drastically drop afterwards. So this must have been a thing for a long time. As for this week's charts it seems that whether Warner employed fraudulent tactics for Teddy's Lose Control or not, it wasn't enough. I feel like the song will still top the Hot 100 eventually as it keeps growing on radio. Though I feel he will face competition from the similar-sounding Beautiful Things by Benson Boone, which is currently outpacing it on streaming. As for Kanye topping the chart, it seems that Carnival has become a true streaming juggernaut but, for obvious reasons, radio won't touch it. So it'll be interesting to see what kind of longevity it will have. Finally, Ariana's new album is doing solid numbers on streaming and We Can't Be Friends has emerged as the clear second single off the album. Hoping radio supports it and it enjoys stability on streaming. I'd love to see this top the Hot 100!

WCBF is projected to hit #1 this week and looks like it will be a multi week one. So it might prevent Benson from ever hitting one. But in the end , longevity matters more than peaks

Related to the discussion reposting the top of the country airplay chart TW LW 2W WOC TITLE PEAK 1 4 - 25 I Can Feel It, Kane Brown 1 Yes, because the #1 this week just happens to be by a person of color, BOOM, racism doesn't exist!! Again, cHeRRy PicKEd!!!!! What don't you guys understand about that? How many other country #1's in the last year were by a person of color? Or how many other songs in the entire 60-position chart of this week are there? (right away I don't recognize any besides Beyonce). You're not as smart as you think you are by showing that.

Are all current country programmers sexist or is market research showing that most country listeners just prefer male artists? To your first point about how many black or artists of color are actually trying to make it in country music: that is an interesting question, and I've wondered that, and I wasn't able to find any exact statistics as to the proportion of black artists who succeed vs. those who actually try, but I'd imagine it could very well be more than a 1% share (they make up 14% of the general U.S. population; and then of course there are many other minorities that make up a much larger percentage of the total as well, though don't know how much of them actually try either). It could be the case as well that if many African Americans aren't interested in country music, it might be because the industry itself is so inhospitable to them and isn't marketed to them.
And just because you can find a few cherry-picked examples of black artists succeeding, doesn't mean that racism doesn't exist. You do not need the complete absence of any examples to the contrary for racism, or any form of prejudice, to exist. You can always look for and will find exceptions, but you have to look at the numbers as a whole.
I highly doubt the claim itself though, that "not that many black people are interested in country music." The genre itself has a long history of African American roots and contributions. These article provide further insight into the matter:
