Radio had their pick of 29 other songs they could've honed in on if it was merely a case of 'radio wanted to play Taylor!'. They chose 'Down Bad'. Streaming? This was back in the first few weeks where the whole album was holding up well. 'Down Bad' was one of the non-singles resonating the most? How is that not hit potential? Or are you just projecting your own feelings and biases onto a greater public? 'Cause people can speak for themselves.

So first of all, I need this to go top 10. After that, I’m obviously supportive of anything and I do love Down Bad. But the real Stan in me would love nothing more than to see a third single push for GAS, WAOLOM, SLL, or SHS. Let’s just kick rocks because we can, why not?? And I think something more left of obvious has more potential to actually hit big.

Since others are championing their favorite TTPD album tracks for a third single, I’ll toss mine into the ring — the title track with an 80’s, a-Ha “Take On Me”-inspired video.

Or are you just projecting your own feelings and biases onto a greater public? 'Cause people can speak for themselves. Huh? They did hone in on several other songs. This, DB, My Boy, Florida, and I think at least one other were all cracking the top 50 upon album release, were they not? All the songs doing best on streaming initially. It was very obvious they just wanted to play the hell out of new Taylor. It would have happened with literally any songs doing well on this album when it launched. As I said, unprecedented momentum. It’s a damn shame she wasted it on a non-mainstream album tbh. This era might’ve had 5 radio smashes if it was another traditional pop album with how hungry CHR was for her.

The several tracks to make top 50 did so because the label allowed the whole album to be played on radio during its initial release. Of all the songs to make top 50 on pop at that time, 'Down Bad' wasn't one of them. That initial burst of album activity died down after a couple of weeks, then 'Down Bad' started its run up the top 50. If it was merely that 'radio just wanted to play new Taylor', again - they had their pick of literally anything else. They could've stuck with one of the songs that already made top 50. They could've stuck with the one that specifically made top 40. They dropped all of those and then they picked something else - that being 'Down Bad'.
No amount of revisionist history or wishful thinking can diminish its chart potential just because you don't (or don't want to) get it.

My favorite song off TTPD is Florida!!!! But I love them all. Down Bad would be a great single, but for now ICDIWABH is still doing its thing. Not easy nowadays to hang on the Hot 100. This song is still hanging in there, and when it drops off the chart to RC, they can go with another song.

I think Guilty As Sin as the next choice, or move on to reputation in a December or so.
Poets wasn't made to be this commercial juggernaut - obviously this isn't true on the sales side. This go around we don't have an Anti Hero or Karma waiting on the bench.
I think it was smart to not make another commercially pop album because she was at risk of being overexposed.

If they do a third single, I expect a feature remix with a proper push.
Down Bad (feat. SZA) still kinda sounds good to me.

Homegirl has to be tired. I hope she does nothing but relax before the last leg and then enjoys her holidays. This album did what it needed to do. Let this song run it's course, drop the rest of the TVs in 2025. Have a brand new era ready for 2026.
*edit* although I would like some remixes of this. Like there's no way she releases her most uptempo number in ages and doesn't give us some club mixes right?

I think she could personally and professionally benefit from like a 2-year break, but I doubt that's ever happening. It seems as if she is happiest when she's most productive. Personally these TVs could've been done in 3 years tops for me. lol But of course people had to make them unusually successful so now they've turned into minirature eras. *sigh*

This is starting to burn on me, ngl. I won't skip it if I'm listening to TTPD in full, but if it comes on autoplay, I'm more inclined to skip. My favorite song off TTPD is Florida!!!! This song is still hanging in there, and when it drops off the chart to RC, they can go with another song. I was in Pensacola recently which is 30 min from Destin and I kept singing this song to myself the whole time! Honestly the run from So Long London through Who's Afraid of Little Old Me? is such a strong stretch of amazing music and songwriting. I bet she has physicals of The Anthology waiting to help this album cruise past 6 or 7 million.

"Down Bad" could be a good single, but I wonder how a radio edit would sound taking out the "fuck it if I can't have him" part. That is the key part of the hook, imo, and I worry that I radio edit wouldn't do the song justice.

I've noticed that TTPD and Midnights she made official clean versions with changed lyrics throughout, although I'm not positive if she did this before with Folklore and Evermore.

Makes sense. I didn't realize that an official clean version existed. I've noticed that TTPD and Midnights she made official clean versions with changed lyrics throughout, although I'm not positive if she did this before with Folklore and Evermore. She has done that before Midnights/TTPD. I know this because my sister listens to the clean versions because she has a very young daughter. In “Betty”, the clean version she sings “would you tell me to go to hell” instead of “would you tell me to go f myself”. I would recommend the clean version of “Ivy” actually. I prefer it over the one with swears. The words chosen are more descriptive without changing the meaning of the song. I hate the clean version of “Down Bad” though. While the substituted words fit sonically, they change the meaning of the song. They don’t convey the emotions that the song is supposed to convey. So idk how “Down Bad” would fare on the radio although it’s definitely the most radio-friendly song left on the album.

I actually have the explicit replaced with the clean one in my evermore playlist. I do think the clean version neuters this song a bit and feel the same about Down Bad.
