Capitol is giving a push?! Did they do that for "Smile"?

Listened a few more times and it has no redeeming features at all.
I’d honestly rather have Teenage Dream and Last Friday Night in power rotation on radio for the rest of summer than this.
There was some dance track Zane Lowe played during her interview that sounds decent enough?

I’m not understanding how people think this is TikTok ready. There is nothing worth going viral about this track, especially amongst younger TikTok users.

New peak of #4 on iTunes! It should be top 2 #1 by the end of the stay. Happy this is resonating outside of toxic stan culture.

Well I’m glad I didn’t abruptly give my review while sitting on the toilet last night with headphones on. I was grossly disappointed. In the territory of Perfect Illusion and Give Me All Ur Lovin.
Revisited this a 2nd time today on the way to work, and it’s not as bad as ya’ll making it out to be. It’s very Born This Way in that the cheesy lyrical content, which is horrid on paper, just seems to smoothly breeze by in a catchy way.
I love the 2nd verse. Katy has a great redub technique that blends her tone so well. Very much reminiscent of the Teenage Dream singles.
Happy to see this at #2 on iTunes. Hopefully #1 soon. They dropped the ball on playlisting once again tho. But it looks like a radio deal is in place, so we’ll see!!
I’m definitely more excited about it than I was last night. Haven’t listened to any of the album snippets yet, and apparently they’re great, so I’m happy.

#saltiness I wonder what's behind that review, because it sounds like it came straight from stan twitter, but much less creative. If you don't like the song/album it's totally legit, but there's a line you don't cross if you write a professional critic review, otherwise, you are no different from a typical toxic stan on tw.

She's never been a critic darling. Not sure what that review proves that wasn't already known.

Listened a few more times and it has no redeeming features at all.I’d honestly rather have Teenage Dream and Last Friday Night in power rotation on radio for the rest of summer than this. There was some dance track Zane Lowe played during her interview that sounds decent enough? That's how I feel. None of the lyrics stand out except the main hookline, which is weak. I expected a really strong instrumental based on the snippets and the headphone ad. However, there is nothing hear to focus on. Just a ever present synth over stagnant drums. No distinction between the verses and pre-chorus. The chorus adds some strong bass and more synths, but that's the highest elevation it goes to. The second verse has nothing unique to it out of very rarely used background vocals, and the pre-chorus has a very tiny addition to the instrument. At 2:15, we should be getting a big swell into an electric guitar with powerful background vocals. Instead, the instrumental remains the same and there are very queit "ahhh"s. Then that awkward and cringey talking lyric comes in, and it ends You come away from the song feeling nothing but boredom. No hatred, no love, just plain old bored. Is it a bad song? No. Is it a good song? No. It's just.. noise. There is no reason to return to it. She hasn't had an album in years and this is the best she could come up with? A child could have written these lyrics in a day, and the production could be done by someone who has just started to learn how to produce. Even vocally, she goes nowhere. There is an anthemic vibe to the chorus, but not strong enough. No ad-libs for the most part, no vocoder, no real harmonies, nothing. Again, just boring Granted, they flopped, but she should have led with When I'm Gone or Electric. Even I Think I'm Ready. Those were more like old Katy and actually good. This isn't even TikTok friendly, as there is nothing about it that would make it go viral or make anyone want to dance to it Sorry for being such a debby downer, I'm just SO dissapointed. As Spree said, a good comparison to the dissapointment is Perfect Illusion (or a more recent one, Yes And?).

Oh gosh don’t remind me of the second degree embarrassment burns I had felt while listening to GMAYL 🙁 I agree with another poster here, after listening to atleast four times, this has not got a single redeeming quality in it. Usually with Katy, I am all in for the visuals but she even ruined that with having Trasha in it.

This just feels really dated, like relistening to Smile and even though it's not a great album there's plenty of tracks that showcase Katy moving in a different direction; Never Really Over, Harleys In Hawaii, Cry About It Later are some of the best tracks of her career and feel like an evolution of Katy, still pop but more... depth I guess. They felt like an evolution of her sound, she just needed a whole album of that and unfortunately Smile is also full of duds. And this album looks no different, I understand she tried to evolve with Witness and it failed commercially so she's attempting to return to form, however I really don't see this doing anything either so her going back to Luke and trying to recapture the magic of Teenage Dream is gonna look even more desperate when the album fails.

This song is so painfully mediocre, I can’t believe she sacrificed her morality for it. I was honestly rooting for her but it’s bad move after bad move.

This song is so out of touch. I’m sorry, Katy, we were all rooting for you. I genuinely can’t believe Katy thought this would work in 2024. A female empowerment song, lazily written and dated sounding, produced by an accused rapist and written by 4 men.
The reviewers deserve to be brutal. If she wants to keep her career, she needs to bring more. I was disappointed the last era, but I still believe she has so much more to offer than this.
It’s fine if she wants to be a campy, pop girl whose music appeals to moms (that’s a fine market), but there has to be more depth she can give than this.
I’m going to hold out hope for the rest of the album. I am happy for those who are enjoying this track. From what I’m seeing here, and in my own group of friends, this is not connecting.

This is exactly what she and pop radio needs - brainless pop with minimum meaning(remember what happened when Katy went political). It sounds great on radio! Hopefully will smash for her!

This is exactly what she and pop radio needs - brainless pop with minimum meaning(remember what happened when Katy went political). It sounds great on radio! Hopefully will smash for her! Pop radio is literally embracing the opposite of brainless female pop right now. Of course this is going to do just fine, it has a radio deal, a big name and the sound is palatable, but it doesn't hold a candle to "Espresso", "Good Luck, Babe", "Fortnight", "LUNCH", or anything Charli XCX has done (which, while not charting on pop right now, is a movement). It doesn't bring the same messaging that Beyonce (her last two albums) and other woman (see: Miley Cyrus "Flowers", Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, Victoria Monet) have brought to the feminist movement the last year, in a time woman want and have created louder voices to stand up against the oppression taking place (there is a reason its a BRAT summer, yeah?) If Katy wants to be remembered as a former top pop girl who drops brainless pop, then sure, this works. I don't personally think Katy wants that though. I think she really thought she was doing something here.

Grown on me a bit more, it works quite nice when out on a sunny breezy day walking.
Although the playlist support on streaming services is quite shocking. Definitely not going to do well on streaming unless it goes viral on TikTok or starts getting added to some of the big playlists like TTH. Youtube views lower than I expected and she needed that to help the streaming.
Releasing at the same time as Eminem's album is also hurting it quite a bit.
Wouldn't be surprised to see this do worse than "Never Really Over", which is quite the opposite of what Katy/her team were probably expecting given the hype/budget and such.

Is it the best song ever? No. Is it as bad as everyone says it is? Also no. Yes, it's generic but it's also very inoffensive.

I knew Luke was involved with the album, but it was shocking to find he was involved with this song in particular. The absolute nerve of that d**khead. And Katy! What were you thinking girl?! It's like Witness all over again with the negativity and it was all SO easily avoidable. Get "Gorgeous" or "Lifetimes" the hell out STAT and let's move past "Woman's World". Swiftly!
And OMG at this bit in that Pitchfork review 🤣:

I think people are more like baffled how this has been happening to someone of her caliber, who have been in charge of this car crash we are witnessing.
I mean even Michael Jackson and Whitney high on all their drugs didn't destroy their eras like this.

Actually, after hearing this in the car, It's growing on me alot more. Very easy to sing along to, and the production slaps a lil more.

Faded 2000s/2010s pop star who's only recent relevance is a hosting gig on a talent show?
