Maybe it’s crazy, but I think This Is How We Do is what actually led to a huge drop off in popularity for her and thus poor momentum going into Witness. Truly one of the worst singles from a major pop star I can think of in the past 10-15 years (well, now including this too). Plus it showed radio programmers and gave the general perception that Katy Perry can indeed flop. Before that, that actually kind of seemed impossible, and I think that did indeed help her to have that reputation around her. I mean there was Thinking of You, but it was so early in and got swallowed by Hot n Cold smashing so quickly, it basically felt like it never happened at all.

The tides were shifting hard mid-PRISM. Imho, Roar was the last scheduled and expected hit and Dark Horse was a lucky fluke. Birthday and its horrendous music video also were a player in this drop off, I think. Might be the worst thing she has ever done.

The irony of Birthday underperforming has always been that Sugar by Maroon 5 smashed like a year later as basically a rewrite of that song. Which I think proves the lyrics of Birthday were the problem. A bit too corny (though again, nothing compared to the cringe of TIHWD).

Tho the lyric video for Birthday has over 300M views, so it’s not the lyrics but the video itself. We all should know that tho.

Birthday and TISHWD both sucked and underperformed accordingly. I remember being 21 years old thinking she's in trouble next album if she doesn't get back to Teenage Dream level. We all know what happened next

I know it's widely liked and as a song I agree it's very cool, but Unconditionally was the first crack on the foundation. Other than Thinking of You all her previous singles had connected well.
Birthday itself is a fine song, passable, exactly the type of radio fodder that would have turned into a hit during Teenage Dream-like smash runs. But then she dropped that horrendous video and it made sense for it to underperform.
TIHWD did alright all things considered. I have a soft spot for the video, it's fun.

Personally I like Birthday and TIHWD more than Roar, Uncle, and Dark Horse.
