No shade on Sabrina but her team started paying for Spotify autoplay on the 8th day just like they did for nonsense (alot of other acts have used autoplay). It's why her song suddenly rose on Spotify.

It's a real proper hit but her team is working hard. It's unlikely that we will see another big jump in streams and autoplay is usually used only for a few weeks. We just saw that with Too Sweet that got put on autoplay then taken off and then its  Spotify streams decreased.

thats a non sequitur cus its not like new user = a new person. its probably just an old user registering a new account for that free 1 or 3 month premium like i am doing 

Of course a new user often means a new person. In the grand scheme of things, streaming is still new and there are still people converting over to streaming. Additionally we know Spotify has been growing compared to other streaming services, so it makes sense Spotify totals would increase.

I don’t think autoplay would only last a week if the artist/label pays Spotify to keep it going. Like that Khia benton boom song which went from 3M all the way to 8M streams gaining upwards for like 5-6 weeks.

It is funny though when one Khia pays for the hack, the other Khia’s magically gaining song immediately goes down or stops gaining the very next day.

Boy Hozier really timed his ascent to number one perfectly - it was the only week no non-Taylor songs had more points than him!

And conversely Benson Boone really timed his attemoted rise wrong - on the 5/4 chart week he had the most points of any non-Taylor song!

Autoplay is the radio. Tbh these songs do get that a lot, but I think that's also cause I keep playing them. Like Boone and Swim didn't get that much for me vs Hozier, Future, Sabrina, Artemas, or Shaboozey, who I keep actively searching out. Between TikTok blowing up for many of these and them being bops it makes sense why they got big, but autoplay definitely helped.

Lose Control and Beautiful Things are slightly different, cause they got real big on Amazon.

I think they made it up and it is referring to the car as a way to refer to carmom’s who’d be perceived as only just getting music from whatever autoplays, due to them on average being less likely to be invested in particular musics or artists to go manually put on in an active fashion but just passively receiving whatever safe music is played by the autoplay. The same concept as people who just listen to whatever is on the radio back in the day but did not actively seek and get albums and listen to them. But it seems like a mean spirited term to me.

Autoplay are the songs that start playing when someone finishes a playlist or album.  In the past, Spotify would just use an algorithm to choose those songs.

However, starting in January 2023, labels could pay Spotify  to boost songs in the algorithm making them much more likely to be autoplayed. Autoplay usually starts on the 8th day after a song is released and lasts for a few weeks. 

Autoplay can have a pretty big effect but it won't make a bomb into a hit (see Madison Beers songs that had autoplay). I believe it's more impactful than playlisting.

Nothing is wrong with a song being put on autoplay. It's extremely common for big new releases.


But as chart watchers, it's something we can be cognizant off. If in the second or third week, there is a big increase of Spotify streams for a song but no similar increase in Apple Music, that's a big sign that it was put on autoplay. autoplay doesn't last long so it's important to keep in mind when forecasting future streams.

First part - yup, Khia means anything or anyone that makes you go “who?” Or “what?”

As for autoplay, it’s when the song you chose finishes up and then the very next song starts playing without your permission or input. You can try playing songs on Spotify by typing its name, (cus you can’t play from an album) skip to the last second and watch what comes up next. It 99% guaranteed it’s either the armeta song or the sabrinkhia song

Just because a song benefits from auto play doesn’t mean it’s not a genuine hit. Auto play is basically radio in the sense that it pushes a few songs with hit potential to the masses. There is a pattern of songs rising hard around week 2 and then drop hard around week 5 that can’t be ignored. While auto play is stronger than playlisting at reaching a wider audience, it can’t magically give a song 9m streams, meaning people clearly like these songs as well.
