It's wild to think about how many weeks a song like Birds of a Feather could have topped the chart last year. I really thought the weeks of a top 5 with 300+ points were just going to be a one-and-done.

I feel like as long as the song makes a spot on a year-end list (which Exes will) itβs a hit. Me and u need to calm down both ended 40ish and are not esp considered hits If the best the rest of Sabrinas album can scrounge up is a 34 peak it will most def be a disappointment

I agree a 34 peak would be kind of disappointing; I think the goal should be top 20 and hopefully another top 10.

Charts aren't that necessary for a song to be considered a "hit". Let's not forget songs like 'lovely' and 'Sweater Weather' exist lol

Ugh, here we are again getting into the useless topic of what makes a song a "hit." Some will say songs that never even had enough points to enter the Hot 100 were hits, while others will use more stringent criteria, such as songs that peaked within the top #2, spent multiple weeks in the top 10, at least 20 weeks on the chart, and around #40 or higher on the year-end ranking (all conditions for which both ME! and You Need To Calm Down satisfy), yet still say somehow those songs were not "real hits." There is no criteria that will satisfy everyone for every song.

We can't compare Taylor and Tate McRae. exes is one of Tate's biggest hits, and Taylor has AT LEAST 20 songs that are bigger than ME! and YNTCM, not saying exes is a bigger hit than those two, it's more a matter of perspective. Also, it's much easier for Taylor to get a #1 hit, than for Tate to score a top 20 song.

Iβm curious as to why my comment has allowed so many people to directly insult me when I am insulting nobody. Not just the people directly insulting me but all the people giving thumbs up to it. I never said anything about any of you people. This is very disturbing to me. Like this guyβs comment right here, what on earth possessed you to try to βNot Like Usβ me? For what? Being upset at a song getting cheesed to the top with radio? That is not a license for you to insult me.

It also didn't have longevity at radio and there has been no single #3. So I won't debate hit or not but I'm sure they had hoped for better

I can't find any insults here I'm interested in seeing how quickly 'the boy is mine' can (re)gain momentum once the video drops tomorrow, also at how Sabrina's new song will do (and if Charli can debut at least some songs on US Spotify)

Regarding a "hit" I believe Billboard considers it, just to make it easy, a song that peaked in the top 40 on the Hot 100. I know that was how they judged their "one hit wonder"

^Not quite sure that's the case. Here Billboard ranked Drake's 328 Hot 100 "Hits" when the article was published:

Just from a few publications this is what I see :
According to Billboard magazine, a U.S. one-hit wonder is an artist who makes the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 but doesn't make it again.
However, in The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders, music journalist Wayne Jancik defines a one-hit wonder as an act that only once makes it onto the national, pop, or Top 40 record chart.
USA Today also considers a song a one-hit wonder if it's the only single by a band to make the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart

Honestly if your metric about what's a hit is comparing anyone to Taylor Swift it's just not even fair or accurate. Especially for Tate McRae who's hardly established in any meaningful way as a consistent hitmaker.

haven't looked at the charts in a minute but love to see Birds of a Feather having a moment!! Such a pleasant surprise to see it rising back to #2 in Spotify a few weeks after it dropped.

Me and u need to calm down both ended 40ish and are not esp considered hits If the best the rest of Sabrinas album can scrounge up is a 34 peak it will most def be a disappointment As long as one of those tracks manage to stay on the chart for at least 20 weeks (or gets close to that) with at least a Top 40 peak securing a spot on a Year End list, itβs a hit in my book. I mostly agree with you, but I've noticed that there are some people who measure their standard of a hit against that artist's biggest hit. For example, the Sabrina Carpenter songs released before Espresso (I forgot the names but there were a couple which did well) were considered successes, but now after Espresso if she has hits that size ever again those people will say it's disappointing and call it a flop. There's just some people who will now expect her to get constant Espresso-sized hits now that she got one. She won't be celebrated anymore for getting to #23 or whatever. She's really going to need at least low top 10's from now on I think. Maybe she could get away with a song that misses the top 10 if it stays top 20 for 4 months or something like that. But otherwise there will be talk of her flopping and her career being over. Look at what happened with Post Malone for example. He was getting White Iverson-sized hits recently and being called a flop and his career declared over. It's wild. But that's just how some people think and it will cause arguments forever unfortunately. If that song was big enough to make him famous, why would a hit of a similar size later on end his career?

It seems like the US Spotify streams are going down a bit from those crazy numbers a few weeks ago, albeit with a higher baseline for the top songs compared to 2022/23!

It seems like the US Spotify streams are going down a bit from those crazy numbers a few weeks ago, albeit with a higher baseline for the top songs compared to 2022/23! I didn't post it before but the numbers from a few weeks ago, weren't just high they were the highest week averages since Spotify Charts were published and had the highest cutoff point of all time While we have dipped since, we are still at both a high average and a high cutoff point. Not to mention, we're still at a high cutoff point for 1M streams, we still have 23 songs doing over 1M streams in a day, 8 of which are doing 2M or more! Just for a bit of context, the same date last year there were only FOUR songs doing over 1M streams and 0 songs doing more than 2M.
