Those Spotify charts are very interesting. And the fact that even the average #200 song is up significantly during the last quarter means the uptick is not just random and due to a few heavily streamed songs at the top. I've been thinking for a while now that such an across the board and sudden surge for all songs cannot be random and people just suddenly deciding to stream all songs a lot more. Maybe Spotify changed the way they calculate and and/or present their numbers, such as they have found a way to better count more streams, or that they are adding streams back in that they used to filter out?

I love this song! And the much underrated "Bittersuite"! It has a mesmerizing club vibe to it. I'd love a 12 minute version lol

Well this was a busier week than usual including a new number one. After four weeks, I Had Some Help goes to #1 although not because it saw a gain as it was down 3.31%. It was actually a close race between it and MILLION DOLLAR BABY which was down 9.87% and a less than 200K difference in streams between the two songs. Not Like Us falls to #3 with it's biggest drop to date of 25.86% Then we had BIRDS OF A FEATHER which continues it's virality off of the album release as it breaks into the Top 5 with a 15.62% gain. Compare this to the lead single LUNCH which fell to #9 with a 21.9% drop. This leads us to the big story of the week and what could've been our new #1 had streaming not been so strong lately, Houdini by Eminem with a 18.3M debut as he gears up for his next album. A Bar Song (Tipsy) had a disappointing fall of 8.55% despite Shaboozey dropping his debut album. And Pink Skies stayed put in streams and was even up a bit by 3.7%.
CHIHIRO falls out of the Top 10 with a 18.35 decrease from last week. Despite that, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT still managed to get 78M in its third week with only a 12.44% drop. That said, The Tortured Poets Department is also still having strong stability as with only 15 songs, it still notched 62M streams in its 7th week with a 11.76% decline in streams at least for the charting songs. This will also be the final week I track the total streams for The Tortured Poets Departments either for the daily charts or the weekly charts. There are no longer enough songs in the Top 100 to justify tracking them and so from here on, I'll only be tracking the top songs. The Thin Grey Line was down by 18.42% while Tell Ur Girlfriend surprisingly fell by 20.88% despite Lay Bankz' album dropping.
The only other debut to note of was Tinashe's Nasty which has been viral for a few weeks now. Eminem's Without Me also re-entered the charts off the back of Houdini dropping. We also saw BAND4BAND's continued rise as it's looking to challenge Sprinter for being Central Cee's biggest hit to date. It was also a very good week for Chappell Roan as three of her songs saw solid boosts and Pink Pony Club likely to debut on next week's chart.
Notable Gains: BAND4BAND - 58.81% one of wun - 45.03% HOT TO GO! - 29.2% Red Wine Supernova - 24.47% Si No Quieres No - 20.22% Good Luck, Babe! - 20.01% Stargazing - 19.48% BIRDS OF A FEATHER - 15.62% Yeah Glo! - 11.69% Kill Bill - 9.77%

It's probably just autoplay.

It's affecting all streams across the board though, total streams being up from like 105 million 1st quarter to 135 million 2nd quarter. Autoplay of a few hit songs would not explain that alone.

It's probably just autoplay. Did autoplay not exist before 2nd quarter 2024? It's affecting all streams across the board though, total streams being up from like 105 million 1st quarter to 135 million 2nd quarter. Autoplay of a few hit songs would not explain that alone. I have no strong evidence for this, so take it with a grain of salt, but my assumption is that it's not just a few hit songs that are getting autoplay, but maybe all of them. Obviously some get it more than others like "Espresso" and "MILLION DOLLAR BABY", but I also get the feeling most of the other songs in the top 200 has at least some autoplay push to them. This isn't to say these songs' success are inorganic or that they wouldn't still be successful without autoplay, but I do feel like whatever Spotify did with the autoplay algorithm recently has inflated the streaming numbers of these songs.

I think this is probably correct. I don't have direct evidence either, but I find that Spotify's algorithm tends to push the same few dozen songs to me constantly. They have definitely oriented their autoplay recommendations around repetitiveness rather than new music discovery. It would make sense that highly popular songs would rank higher in their algorithm. I'm sure labels have agreements to get their songs higher in the algorithm, but I don't think it's this tiny handful of songs that some people here seem to think. It's probably thousands of tracks at any given time that are getting pushed. Spotify has basically adopted the worst tendencies of radio -- shrinking the number of songs they play and just replaying the same ones over and over again that they've decided are good enough to keep you listening.

Such a shame for Em, because Houdini felt like a #1 song last week (and the SPS numbers proved it), but it's still a win for him - highest-peaking song in the US since The Monster (2013). Eminem and Beyonce are the only '90s artists' that can casually debut in the top 3 (or even top 10 lol) without the help of current artists, also a fact: they're now the only artists with multiple top 3 hits from the last 3 decades.

I am really hoping this album gives Eminem a #1 somewhere, if not Houdini ... he would then also be the first rapper as well to get a #1 in 3 different decades I believe?
A bummer if only they had done an airplay deal for the first week it could have clinched #1 but still a great success

Tbh I have never heard the full Eminem song and never seen anyone outside of Pulse talk about it lol. But no shade to it, that's just the segmented market of 2024.
Honestly by my social media and the like I'd have guessed the #1 song was Espresso lmao. I do hope our song of the summer is something that truly impacts culture a la Despacito. As an international listener I can't help but feel that if the US allows Morgan Wallen to rule all summer again it's gonna be another unremarkable year where the #1 doesn't feel as big as, say, California Gurls which just screams summer.
To be fair to Wallen I believe As It Was was also technically a song of the summer? Talk about slow ass charts.

^ and the fact that Butter was for 2021...(blocking G4U again) we really need a SUMMER song at #1 again, like California Gurls, Despacito, I Gotta Feeling and Call Me Maybe, so it'd be great to see Espresso at #1 (on both SOTS and Hot 100), but I doubt it. AT LEAST, IHSH is a better song than Last Night, and sounds more summery. I am really hoping this album gives Eminem a #1 somewhere, if not Houdini ... he would then also be the first rapper as well to get a #1 in 3 different decades I believe?Kanye did it first: Slow Jamz (2004) Gold Digger (2005) Stronger (2007) E.T. (2011) Carnival (2024)

Either way, both IHSH and NLU feel like big contenders for that title this summer.

That cultural touchstone summer song you're seeking doesn't exist and probably won't for a while. Streaming platforms have grown immensely since COVID and that fragments audiences as well as traditional genres. Some genres have suffered (hip-hop, EDM) while others have rode this fragmentation well (synthpop, country, etc.)
For what it's worth, "I Had Some Help" is arguably the best SOTS contender this decade. Shouldn't that mean something or are you still alienated by the genre?

Not insinuating anything lol. We're saying the same thing. It's been a minute since a song overcame the fragmented market and truly reasonated with general audiences in a similar way to Despacito, Old Town Road, etc.. last year's SOTS was Last Night and I just don't think it made a mark on pop culture the way these huge summer hits used to do. The fact that I Had Some Help is our best contender is exactly my point because so far, it's killing it on the charts but still doesn't feel like a song that's dominating the conversation.
