"Good Luck, Babe" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? How the hell did we get here?

Lol time is showing Post Malone didn't take Hip-Hop serious and it was more of a 'young wild phase' for him, so I'm not even surprised at this pivot.
He honestly just reminds me of a Kid Rock-lite. I can just see the long term pivot into some Country-Rock artist adored by conservative middle aged white people and we forget there was ever a time he was an artist marketed to the Hip-Hop & Pop audience.

I love Post and think he's much more talented than Rock (and more likable too), but I get this comparison (unfortunately, haha)

That is a bit much lol. I highly doubt Babe will be as remembered and iconic and important to music as Smells like teen spirit. I think "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is pretty overrated in its influence, and even so I have to agree here as what influence are people expecting "Babe" to have? Honestly, "Good Luck, Babe" absolutely feels like something that will be looked back at as a defining cultural moment. If you don't see it yet, you will.

Honestly, "Good Luck, Babe" absolutely feels like something that will be looked back at as a defining cultural moment. If you don't see it yet, you will. Not gonna lie could you go in a little on this? To me it feels pretty of the moment - there's definitely a throwback element to it to late 2000s/early 2010s popped, but it feels more like a synthesis of that and the nu-disco stuff we've been getting since Blinding Lights and Don't Start Now then something brand new. Then again, I suppose nothing is ever entirely new, and who knows, maybe that'll be the sound of pop for a bit. Personally I doubt it, it feels more like country adjacent stuff will creep in (in a way more like Please Please Please than Texas Hold Em, if that makes sense), but I digress. Like, to me it feels like a really good pop song but not much more than that. Well, aside from being Chappel Roan's coming out party - that should be big, I think she'll stick around.

Maybe itβs because Iβm biased but GLB feels like a very big cultural moment for queer pop (in a word that is increasingly hostile to queer and trans identity) and the fact that Roanβs rise from an indie artist to superstar has been insanely fast. The accolades. The viral performances and outfits. Sheβs got so much going for her!
β¦or maybe Iβm wrong, which is also a total possibility! Itβs just pop music :) it might just be a fun summer with a great song and nothing more. But then again people were saying it was a bad idea to release Please Please Please/it would flop just a few weeks ago sooooo

It was immediately huge upon release in queer circles and is only getting bigger almost three months out from release. It is having a big moment in queer zeitgeist and I do think it will leave a legacy. That said, a Nirvana comparison when the song hasn't yet hit the Top 10 & is the artist's first Hot 100 hit is incredibly lofty. that's all

I can see why a suggestion comparing GLB! to that would seem very far fetched, but when you look at it as: GLB could be to Gen Z queer culture as SLTS was to Gen X weirdos. The benefit SLTS had was having the support of outlets like MTV and magazines, all of which had credibility and a strong following among peers. Today, there arenβt a lot of equivalent channels and outlets to funnel the message of βthis song is importantβ through, so you have things like social media and tiktok, none of which rate high on credibility. But Gen X also quickly went on to dominate what would be the foundation of pop culture and music shortly afterward, which only helped to raise the sense of importance behind something like SLTS. Itβs a bold statement to make but itβs not completely unrealistic.

They saw the video and loved the song and it ushered in a completely new sound. Of course bands like GnR and Metallica didn't go anywhere in 92 but many of the hair metal bands disappeared from MTV

Yeah Nirvana and the other Seattle bands ushered out "hair bands" and ushered in grunge music, as well as the 'quite verse-loud chorus' dynamic. In terms of the culture itself, Nirvana/grunge also brought certain fashion with it (i.e. plaid, etc), and the feeling that people who aren't popular/cheerleaders/etc have other people like them. I think "SLTS" is a bit overstated in its influence because ultimately grunge was a trend that only lasted a few years, but it did have influence and is generally recognized as a turning point in pop culture. To that end, "Good Luck Babe" has a lot of work ahead of it to be seen on that level. I was just wondering what about it people see as being on the level of ushering out one trend and bringing in a new one both in music and the cultural landscape to already be mentioned with "SLTS." It would need to speak for a large group of people who haven't felt heard (which is perhaps possible) and also usher out one sound and bring in a new trend of music to even be in a conversation with "SLTS."

In 97 when the spice girls hit, it helped usher in the return of that sort of pop music that had been missing from the charts since the early 90s. Hanson, backstreet boys, nsync, Britney and Christina all followed and became huge. BB of course charted first back in 95 but struggled initially in the US

Thatβs a pretty limited view of what an influential or βimportantβ song needs to do in order to be considered as such. A song just needs to be representative or symbolic even of a people or culture in a larger-scale way. Itβs more likely that GLB wonβt be that at all but to set up these arbitrary boxes that need to be checked off just because the example being compared to did it like that is strange to me.

I don't know what this is specifically directed at since you didn't quote anything, but I can say the initial post that sparked this conversation said: If a post compares "GLB" to "SLTS" and "SLTS" only, then of course the impact "SLTS" had is going to be used as the measure. If other songs had been named along with "SLTS," then other things would be looked at.

I love "GLB" and obviously Chappell is having a huge moment right now. We're witnessing the rise of a promising new pop star in real time, which is always exciting. But what am I missing here? "GLB" is just a straight-forward pop song and nothing about it is even off-trend. It's not pushing any sounds that are going to shift the pop landscape and it's not a song that even makes a bold statement. I think people are conflating her meteoric rise and her potential to be a pop culture shifter with the song itself and those are not the same thing.

Same. It's a good song but it hardly reinvented the wheel. Is it the visual, her flamboyant style? We've seen that before too.

Also the album that "Nevermind" by Nirvana knocked out of number one was famously Michael Jackson's long-in-the-making, uber-expensive "Dangerous." It was a passing-of-the-torch moment on the charts comparable to when "I Want To Hold Your Hand" knocked "There! I've Said It Again" by old-fashioned crooner Bobby Vinton from number one on the Hot 100 in 1964.

I've Said It Again" by old-fashioned crooner Bobby Vinton from number one on the Hot 100 in 1964. Yeah I've heard people talk about that symbolism before, but I've never quite understood it because Dangerous of course had a lot of hits (with most of them coming after the album fell from #1), Michael Jackson himself would have more hits on future albums, and R&B/pop music remained relevant even during the time grunge was big. The only genre grunge really replaced was 'hair band' rock, but even then that groundwork had already started with alternative acts like Red Hot Chili Peppers and R.E.M. having hits before Nirvana blew up. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the culmination/tipping point.

While I donβt feel the need to compare it to other songs, especially in commercial terms, I actually do think GLB is reinventing the wheel! The song is more overtly gay than most hit pop songs from the past few years while sheβs serving Kate Bush vocals. I truly cannot think of another hit song from the past 5-10 years that sounds anything like it.

Oh sorry, it was in response to your post a couple above this one. I just meant the specifics you put on it. That it would have to basically put an end to a popular genre while also starting a new one. Yeah, SLTS can maybe be credited with that but itβs hardly a requirement of a generation-defining song. At the end of the day, most of us likely arenβt the ones doing the defining of that when all is said and done. Iβm not gen Z and while Iβm queer, Iβm still fairly far removed from the target audience of GLB, so itβs also not me who will have any influence over whether a song speaks enough to the people who basically take ownership of it. Iβm simply saying that itβs not an impossibly far fetched suggestion to make.

A song thatβs openly about queer/lesbian romance smashing on mainstream pop radio is (literally) not straight-forward and quite bold.

Well a girl with a bunch of Grammys and sales has a song about the same subject that's higher on mainstream pop radio right now, and it's more explicit and in your face about it.

A song thatβs openly about queer/lesbian romance smashing on mainstream pop radio is (literally) not straight-forward and quite bold. It's an easily digestible song with synth-pop production that could fit on any number of recent albums. The lyrics are inoffensive and incredibly universal to anybody that's had a breakup. Not to mention, "LUNCH" is right there, lol. And as if Lil Nas X and Sam Smith haven't shown that queer pop can be incredibly successful and mainstream over the last few years (and theirs was far more inflammatory). I think you guys are overblowing this albeit great song. Bold? Smells Like Teen Spirit? Reinventing the wheel? Defining cultural moment? I dunno, just not seeing it. Chappell has the potential to be a pop culture shifter, this song is just her first hit IMO. The same way "Just Dance" was for Lady Gaga, but wasn't the song that moved the needle.

Its gap in streams was still large enough to beat Not Like Us which shot back up to #2 with a 21.12% increase thanks to Kendrick Lamar's concert event last week. This pushed back Espresso to #3 which had a 9.42% drop in streams. I Had Some Help stablized at #4 with only a 0.32% decrease in streams. Then reaching a new peak of #7 is Good Luck, Babe! which was up 28.11%. And in our highest debut of the week, Post Malone and Blake Shelton's collab debuted with 8.8M. Not as big as I Had Some Help but still a respectable debut. None of the albums from last week had good holds this week. Don Toliver had drops for BANDIT and BROTHER STONE by 32.06% and 37.66% respectively. Meanwhile the Thin Grey Line had a fall of 43.71%, and The Man He Sees in Me absolutely collapsed with a drop of 52.89%.Also, Pink Skies falls out of the Top 10 with a 28.62% decrease. Meanwhile, Chappell Roan continues her momentum with now 7 songs charting and several of her songs reaching new peaks in chart position and in streams. DEVIL IS A LIE also broke into the Top 10 as Tommy Richman avoids being a one hit wonder. WHISKEY WHISKEY also rose off of its debut last week and the boy is mine continued its momentum. We also saw debuts for Lorde's remix of Charli XCX's Girl, so confusing. Finally, it was interesting to see Chappell do better than both the new albums from Peso Pluma and Gracie Abrams. At the very least Gracie's song with Taylor Swift debuted at #27 with 5.8M. Peso Pluma's highest song was a pathetically low 3.234M, only enough to hit #117. The 2020's hasn't really had a Nirvana/Lorde moment, where something so different hits the scene and sweeps all the old tired stuff away. And honestly, with how homogeneous streaming is, I don't think we'll ever get another one of those. In the past radio controlled everything, nowadays people just listen to what they want and pop music is now a bit of everything. We've had country songs, 80's inspired synthpop, r&b, hip-hop, folk, trap music, edm, regional mexican music, drum n' bass, pop-punk tracks all hitting the Hot 100 in the past 4 years, compared to when something like Royals came out and basically electropop was the only thing ruling the charts for the 5 years leading up to that point.
When it comes to Chappell, I like her but I don't really see the Gaga comparisons. I honestly don't think we'll ever see someone like her again, her rise and how ubiquitous she was is still crazy to think about, Taylor Swift is huge but I think her current success pales in comparison to Gaga in 2009/2010, just an otherworldly artist. You had to be there.

I'm not even a Swift stan, and I can acknowledge someone saying her current success pales in comparison to Gaga at any point is ludicrous.
I also wonder what people are contending "Smells Like Teen Spirit" swept away apart from hair bands.
