hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=342851&title=SMILE%2521-IT%25E2%2580%2599S-THE-TOP-20Tuesday, October 1, 2024 SMILE! IT’S THE TOP 20Sabrina Carpenter's Short N' Sweet (Island) will return to #1 in its sixth week. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga's experimental, jazz-leaning Harlequin (Interscope), a companion to The Joker, will be the top new entry this week. Arriving ahead of the movie, in which Gaga stars as Harley Quinn, the album is on track for a Top 20 debut. Physical copies this week are available only from Gaga’s website while the widespread physical release will be 10/11. Additionally, the release of live tracks not yet on the album and a Kimmel appearance tonight may lift the set above its projected 26k.

I mean, who really cares about that Gaga project? The real test will be when she drops the LG7 lead, hopefully solo, because she will never get rid of the story that she can only score a hit with her collabs

Not sure if that's good or bad for GaGa as I haven't kept up on her numbers. Looks like Katy fell out the top 20, wondering how steep her drop will be for week two. Solid for the rest of the girls (Sabrina,Taylor, Chappell, and Billie)!

Disaster??? It was a passion project that was just thrown out there. The movie release etc could help it increase. And even if it doesn't, it still isn't a disaster. It was most likely cheap filler to produce and still is making money. This sort of sound is not what her core fans want or enjoy or will rush out and buy. I am not even a major Gaga fan but it is still far from a disaster. If anything, it is pretty impressive to be it is even doing that much with the limited promo and none of the physicals even being included in this.

Yeah, 26k/top 20 debut for something so niche isn’t a disaster. Some of our favs probably wouldn’t even debut in the top 100 with something like it.

#2 in sales from just her website ain’t bad.

Since it's just a side project, I think 26K is respectable. As others have said, the real test will be when she releases her next studio album.

I do wonder how much of a difference the physicals would have made had they been ready. On one hand, she had the element of surprise working in her favour, but that meant no physicals in stores. On the other hand, had there been notice, it’s possible the streaming numbers would be lower as people may have been less likely to check it out knowing it wasn’t a pop-adjacent album.

Was hoping Billy Strings to challenge top 20 from pure sales.
Meanwhile Luke Bryan didn't debut top 20. Oh he is so washed.

Try again, troll. A surprise-drop jazz side project tied to an unreleased movie, did only 30% less than one of the most promoted studio albums of the year from her primary popstar peer.

and I wondered how 3 hours went by without a Katy vs Gaga comparison, really thought it would be the first post of the thread.

that seems very low considering she had cd + 2 vinyls. maybe many of them are not shipped yet?

26k isn't bad when you consider this is a side project full of no pop singles, that also acts as a soundtrack to a film that's been critically-panned. It was also announced like 2 days before release. Gaga has a #1 worldwide smash right now and she has a real album on the way, so whatever.

I think those who preordered the album will receive it this week, as those were scheduled to ship on release. It seems like for now the next shipment of the album is October 7 according to her website. Physicals aren't available anywhere else besides her website so all of the pure sales this week are iTunes + D2C physicals. I feel like this kind of album would do decently in stores too so I wonder how much she would have had with that as well.

I still think this is a commercial misfire. All the arguments about it being a passion jazz project are cool and all but matter little in terms of the commercial side. It matters little for her next album. This is so niche I bet a huge portion of the target audience for LG7 did not even bother with it. I'm kinda impressed it's matching the SPS of 143 though.
Nice to see Billie finally above TTPD. It's been close for weeks now and Billie's team just can't be bothered to promote whatsoever (and sadly that BOAF video is one of the worst things they've ever cooked).

Think of it this way: if Gaga wasn’t involved in these side projects and things unrelated to her pop music career, she wouldn’t be seen as a versatile artist, which itself is a label that helps sustain her in the longrun. Once the pop hit days are over (and she’s likely mostly at that point now if we’re being honest), she can rely on other avenues to continue doing what she does. Unless I’m misunderstanding you, you’re basically that because she’s doing side projects that won’t pull comparible numbers to what pop projects would, she’s misfiring commercially. So she should continue focusing on her pop career, aka, put all of her eggs in one basket. Even commercially, I believe these side projects benefit her image for the long term. Continually going after instant chart success can only sustain an act for so long.

I understand your point and I do think this is hard sell and not everyone can do these genre shifts and keep the sales good. Even examples like Taylor and Beyoncé never moved into a genre as uncommercial as "jazz covers of older songs for DC film". So yeah I do understand it can still be beneficial for her in spite of the low numbers.
I feel like she might have one more big pop success era in her? Chromatica could have been bigger if she hadn't abandoned it due to the pandemic. She hasn't even neeeded massive CHR numbers to make wins out of "Shallow", "Always Remember Us This Way", "Die With a Smile" and "Rain On Me".

I think GG's numbers are great for a side project. She is an artist and super talented. Her next full GG album will sell big!

Taylor and Beyonce are always the exception but perhaps became the exception because they stepped away from convention, either in their music or delivery. There’s always a risk involved and it doesn’t always work, but stepping outside of the norm is what keeps all of them interesting and helps extend their careers.

#2 in sales from just her website ain’t bad. Okay? Let's discuss how this album is bringing in more revenue than the girls with hundreds of thousands of streams. Harley Quinn WON.

So why is the 2011 'Rio S/T' topping iTunes? That's pretty random.

So why is the 2011 'Rio S/T' topping iTunes? That's pretty random. The only reason I can see is that several songs from Sérgio Mendes either as performer or writer are included in the soundtrack. He passed away a few weeks ago.
Anyway, the current #1 is now Cutouts by The Smile, which was supposed to be released on Friday. Further down at #4 is Jelly Roll's new album which was supposed to be released in two Fridays. Curiously, the latter only has 3 songs to stream and appears at #97 at Apple Music.

Re: the pre-orders on the current chart, I noticed after Post released that the 'Pre-Order' chart hasn't been updating. Only albums that were previously available for pre-Orders have been showing up in that list - so no Linkin Park, The Cure, Jelly Roll, etc. Maybe with the diminished album sales on iTunes, they decided to add Pre-Orders to the main chart?
