IMO, Toby Keith doesn't need to be on the Pop chart, there are thousands of country stations you can listen to him on I didn't even bother to read anything else you typed, because this struck me right away. Are you going to tell me there are not thousands of Urban stations you can listen to rap on?

If pop means popular, where are Toby Keith and Josh Groban on the CHR/Pop chart? To expand on this good question, if pop means popular, what genre of music is Britney Spears and *Nsync?

God... I hope not. [Bubblegum] pop is just as bad as some of the rap that's being slapped together and thrown out there right now. I can handle some of XXX-Tina's song (mainly, the non-"dirrty" ones) and Stacie's More to Life; but to have Britney, the boy bands, and Britney clones come back, I think I'd just about puke up my left lung. I don't listen to pop radio, but if these people came back, they'd not only be on the radio - but on TV, etc, etc.
I'm happy to see some more Adult Contemporary leaning artists (Michelle B., Matchbox Twenty, Sarah M., etc.) becoming successful. I'd like to see more rock and alternative become successful, too. And, I think that's the way radio has been leaning toward recently. But... anything cept this bubblegum pop and bubblegum "hip-hop."

Another quick note...
Not that I lived back then, but it seems, back in the 60s, the Top 40 / Pop format seemed more open to all sorts of genres. You could find stuff from the likes of girl groups, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Patsy Cline, Motown, etc. etc. etc. all on the same format. Now country has been taken out of the format completely. And most pop stations chase after the trends, and once a trend has been burnt out, they case after the next new thing. Whatever happened to the wide variety of songs and genres available on one station?

Bubblegum probably won't come back into full swing for atleast 3 more years. I think we're going into the adult pop phase of radio right now.

I wouldn't mind pop music making a comeback again. Most of the rap songs are beginning to sound the same. Every record label seems to want to have their own "Nelly". There are very few good rap songs anymore. But Rock is much better than Rap right now. I think Pop Music will slowly make it's way back again.

Ignoring JCMF's post on pop music, I'd say pop music is making a comeback. With Rhythmic songs decreasing in abundance on CHR/Pop and Hot AC songs moving in to replace them, but not entirely, that leaves room for other kinds of music. Slowly but surely, it seems that pop is coming back to its only real place. These times of changeovers from one phase to another are the best because they offer so much mix and variety! :)
