I have some questions relating to the search function. Today, for example, I did a search for "Smashing Pumpkins" using the pop-up one within the News section, not the one in the menu at the very top of the page. I got this message: If it helps, I selected the "Search in: Subject" only. Since there was actually an earlier Smashing Pumpkins thread that I missed, I'm wondering, does the search feature I used have a default time (7 days, a month, a year, the beginning of time?), in which case, it makes sense that nothing turned up. Or are there just occasional glitches with it? This is about the 3rd or 4th time something like this has happened for me in my 4-5 months of posting here. I'm interested in starting another thread, this time on the Beastie Boys. I did a search and got this result twice: What does this mean? FWIW, I just tried the same searches with the search found at the very top of the page, and found a "Beastie Boys - TBD era" thread. So besides the obvious "Just use that search button, then"... is there something I'm doing wrong in the pop-up search, is it just less reliable... what's up? When I was searching for the Smashing Pumpkins thread today, I got that "thread does not exist" message. I knew it existed and stuff, and it took like 3 searches to find it. I eventually found it by setting it to just give me like 2 results. The Search function works real well sometimes, and other times it's just crap.

Okay. Seems to be just an off-and-on thing for a lot of people. Thanks for the replies.

Ummm... am I the only person having issues with the site? I get an error on the first page of the Music News section and only like 10 threads show up... and the second page is all stuff from 2004... Just me? I think the board is having a problem handling the number of hits that the music news section is getting tonight. Thread does not exist; news, 1140 Nothing turns up in music news even if I search within the last 50 days. Edit: Mega248 fixed the music news section.

I've noticed that the search function here is pretty bad, and it isn't too hard to even (unintentionally) take down the site.
Not only do searches take a ridiculous amount of timeto complete, I've had them bring down the site (unintentionally of course) for 30 seconds.
I don't know if there is anything that you can do about this as this is a freely-hosted board, but I figured that Matt should know since this is an issue.

There's no relation between the search function and that screen you get saying to try again in 30 seconds. And there's nothing I can do about it. If anything, it's the high traffic and posting volume here that causes the delay.

Yeah searching doesn't bring down the board. It's just a coincidence that you got that screen after searching.

I dont like the search because it never works for me. Like...I will be looking for Avril-Dont Tell Me on the pop charts-I have actually tried searching for variations of that title (and there are not many-I tried with quotes, I tried with spaces, etc...) and no matter what I did no topic would come up. So then I would go back and on the second page its sitting there :eyebrow: (that was just an example btw)

Yeah it's because sometimes when you have over 59 posts on your board, it takes a little extra work.

That may be part of it, but I really feel that it has to do with the way the search function is programmed. vBulletin and Ikonboard (2 forums systems that I use) have absolutely no problem with pulling up upscure things, and they do it quickly.
Those two boards search through posts as a whole and can sort y relevancy or date, whereas this board simply uses a post as a string of words that aren't really connected.
There are HUGE boards out there that the search function works reliably and efficiently, and I am a firm believer that this software that Proboards uses (looks like a modified version of YaBB) is to blame, not the quantity of posts.

Why the heck does this function never work? I was looking for my "catchphrases" topic from last year and everything I try, it comes up with absolutely nothing!

I normally wouldn't make a big deal out of this in this forum, but did you really miss the existing topic four lines down?

Is anybody else having issues with the board search? I've been using it for years and never had a problem with it. Now all of a sudden it just doesn't work, it's weird? Was something changed to where it only searches the first post in a thread or something? If I do a search for 90 days for "lyfe" it won't pull up this thread. But If I do 365 days, it does. It happened with the dr dre thread too. Did something change? No biggie, just curious, because I swear it used to be a lot easier to search for a thread.

I just created a board last night dedicated to archiving music chart data. ( aceticarchives.proboards84.com/index.cgi) At the bottom of the pages on that board, there is a search bar where you can search for info listed anywhere on the board. Is there a similar function here? It would make things a lot easier to find, since I'm extracting most of the information from this board.

You can just use Google to get the exact same results.

But those aren't limited to this site. Sometimes the heading isn't exactly the same each time and the results are mixed.

Hey guys, could you please look into the search function at the dance sub-board? It hasn't been working for about two weeks. I tried doing a search for 5-6 sub-boards and they all work. It seems to be just the Dance sub-board (I tried both ways). This is the error I receive:
Pulse Music Board :: Search Results Content-Type: text/html
Pulse Music Board :: An Error Has Occurred An Error Has Occurred Thread does not exist; dance, 1166658320
Thanks.

So that's why a couple of my recent searches weren't working...I had all the individual format forums checked and also got that error.

Right, so this isn't related to this thread at all except they both involved a Pulse search, but I'm too lazy to go back further and find a more appropriate one.
When I use the search function, I tend to search subject only, so I uncheck "message." In the past that has worked fine, but now, when I uncheck message, it searches the message anyway. Is this a Proboards bug or a Pulse one? I know everyone's been upgrading and messing with code lately, but I'm not sure who would have been dealing with this feature.

I noticed that too when searching for some very specific threads yesterday and today. I also noticed that when I try to search within a thread, I actually get results for the forum in which that thread is. Maybe it's related to the upgrade.
