Fantasia is in the August issue of Essence.
ESSENCE . CULTURE . ENTERTAINMENT Fantasia’s Second Act Her story of struggle and survival lights up the small screen By Rebecca Louie
Credit: Israel Synder As a teen, Fantasia Barrino seemed destined to become another statistic—a wayward youth succumbing to her circumstances, which included being a ninth-grade dropout, a functional illiterate, a victim of child molestation, and a mom at age 16. But instead, as the world looked on, Barrino became a superstar with first-name-only recognition. In 2004, on the finale night of American Idol , 65 million votes were cast, more than President Bush received in the federal election that year. Fantasia received more than half of those votes. Her straight-from-the-streets soul spawned platinum record sales, four Grammy nods, one Billboard Music Award and one NAACP award.
Despite her success, Barrino, who grew up in High Point, North Carolina, refuses to forget those early struggles. In fact, she’s hoping others can learn from her mistakes. “I want to use my story as a testimony,” she says. “I want to tell people you don’t have to be perfect to be what you want to be. You want to be a lawyer or a banker? Pick yourself up and go get it.” This month Lifetime Television premieres Life Is Not a Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story, based on her gritty New York Times best-selling autobiography. The film, directed by choreographer and actress Debbie Allen, stars the singer as herself and includes: Loretta Devine (Crash), Viola Davis (Get Rich or Die Tryin’), Kadeem Hardison (Biker Boyz) and Jamia Simone Nash (My Wife and Kids) as the young Fantasia.

Got this from myjais QUOTE Midi Mafia Blasts Summer Hits for Lloyd Banks, Fantasia and More Midi Mafia Blasts Summer Hits for Lloyd Banks and Fantasia -- more production following in 2006 with Deemi, Sam Scarfo, and more. New York, NY (PRWEB) June 22, 2006 -- As one of the most sought-after production teams in the industry today, Midi Mafia is taking their hit-making abilities to the next level in the Summer of 2006. Their new Lloyd Banks song, "Make You Move," will be feature on Banks' upcoming Rotten Apple LP, and they are in the studio putting the final touches on Fantasia's sophomore album. Other upcoming work includes tracks for Sam Scarfo, Penelope Jones, Flipsyde and their own artist, Deemi. After the phenomenal success of their 2003 hit "21 Questions" on 50 Cent's debut album, Get Rich Or Die Tryin, the team of Bruce Waynne and Dirty Swift went on to create for the likes of Lil Mo, Nelly, Young Buck, Talib Kweli, Miri Ben-Ari and Mack 10. They are continually proving that their diverse production stylings bring the best to Hip Hop, R&B and Pop music. Midi Mafia has also taken the world of video games by storm, with original scoring for SCEA's NBA '06, MLB '06 and NBA '07. While the Midi Mafia movement is under way, creating breaking songs for various new artists with major labels, Bruce Waynne and Dirty Swift have embarked upon their own label situation, Family Ties Entertainment. They recently signed their first artist, Deemi, in association with Dangerous LLC, to a formidable distribution and marketing deal with Atlantic Records. Deemi's song "Hoodz Princess" was featured on talkshow diva Wendy Williams' 2005 compilation project, Wendy Brings The Heat Vol I. Deemi's first single will drop this Fall, and her solo debut, Soundtrack Of My Life, will be released early 2007. www.prweb.com/releases/2006/6/prweb401979.htm

Got this from myjais from .net Artist: Midi Mafia Interviewer: Brandon Greene SoundSlam: What's new with the Mafia? Swift: Man we've been busy, we have an R&B from Brooklyn artist named Deeni on Atlantic. We just finished her album, and were working on putting out her single. We just did five records on Fantasia's album. We did Lloyd Banks, we got Sam Scarfo on Def Jam's album coming, and we just did NBA 07. SoundSlam: What do you look for in artist that you produce for? Swift: Sometimes with signed artists it might just be a check. Sometimes with big name artists you don't really get to interact with them. You send them the track, they drop their vocals, and it's a wrap. We have the most fun with those artists you don't know what to expect from. Like Fantasia, working with an artist that is creative, talented and open to suggestions is always the best thing, and if an artist is knowledgeable about the recording process that is good too. soundslam.com/articles/print_page.p...type=interviews

got this from tasia4eva06 She can tell her triumphant tale best Idol' star Barrino's story is so compelling, personal that it is fitting she is cast to act in it Back when Fantasia Barrino was contending on American Idol, she gave a performance of Summertime that was not simply music but drama. It made people take notice of her in a way that they hadn't before, and put her firmly on the road to the title. I have a feeling that there's at least one similar moment in The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale, the movie premiering Aug. 19 on Lifetime. Barrino plays herself in it, and there's a church scene that -- even in a brief, edited form shown to TV critics on Friday -- is as dramatic and nakedly emotional as her turn on Idol was. Barrino, who loves horror movies, wants to act more. And she appears to have the goods. ``I think she's excellent, and I'll tell you why,'' said Viola Davis, a Tony award-winning actress who plays Barrino's mother in the movie. ``Because she's honest. She doesn't put anything on.... Then you have to come with honesty yourself.... You can't have a false moment. ``It doesn't happen a lot,'' Davis said after a Fantasia Barrino Story press conference. ``So many actors are into their vanity. They're so aware of the camera, they're terrified of experiencing certain emotions. (Barrino) didn't have that.'' Like her print autobiography, the movie forces Barrino to revisit not only her Idol triumph (some clips of which are included in The Fantasia Barrino Story) but a rough life before, including pregnancy at 16, a poor education and incidents of violence. She was excited when Lifetime bought the movie rights to the book. She was terrified, though, at the idea of playing herself. ``I said, `Who's going to play me, and what's she going to look like?' They came to me and said, `Well, they want you to play yourself.' I said, `Nooooooo. I don't act, I sing.' '' But she was persuaded that playing herself would help the movie, and thereby help spread her message of hope and perseverance. She recalled how, before that Summertime performance, she did not expect to win Idol. (``When Ryan Seacrest called my name, I jumped,'' she said. ``I broke my shoes!'') She wasn't even confident that she could make the top two. ``When you hear the word `idol,' people think you have to be a certain way. You have to be a perfect person, clean. You have to be a role model,'' she said. ``When I went, I was the only one (of the finalists) that had dropped out of school and had a child at a young age.'' The contestants were not allowed to go on the Internet and see what viewers said about them. But Barrino would hear from relatives who did -- and a lot of it wasn't very nice. She decided that, with Summertime, she would do it in a way that told viewers ``I still am somebody.'' The performance, she said, made people think less about her past and more about her future, that ``I'm trying to better myself for me and my child.'' Still, acting was not easy at first. She spent two weeks going over the script with director Debbie Allen before production started. When scenes brought up hard memories of her past, or when she felt intimidated by the experienced actors around her, Allen and the cast would urge her on. As Allen, Davis and Loretta Devine (who plays Fantasia's grandmother) talked about their star, you saw how fond they were of her. Barrino tightly held Allen's hand throughout the press conference. For Devine, that fondness predated their meeting. ``I never vote on American Idol,'' Devine said. ``Reality shows are taking all of our (acting) jobs away. But I remember calling over and over (to vote for Barrino). It became a personal thing for me that she won. I wanted her so badly to win. ``I've been doing this forever,'' added Devine, whose resume includes Crash and Grey's Anatomy. ``And when I got a chance to meet her, I was so moved. There is something in her that is so unique.... She has an incredible effect on people.'' www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/news/15045835...annel=ohio_news

Got this from Loco Idol winner Fantasia just wanted to clean my slate FOR FANTASIA BARRINO, sometimes a kiss is just a kiss — even if the kisser is Jamie Foxx. He just asked if he could kiss me, Barrino said of the smooch seenround the tabloids. But I have a friend. Barrino started tearing up on stage after watching clips from her Lifetime movie The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life is Not a Fairy Tale, which airs next month. She was in Pasadena promoting the film at the TV critics summer press tour. She says she never thought she could win the competition because of her background. I think to be an Idol, you should be a perfect person, but I was trying to clean my slate, Barrino says. I dropped out of school and had a child at a young age. She says her friends told her that people were knocking her on the Internet, saying I wasnt good for kids. Then she went on stage one night and belted out a stunning rendition of Summertime. Thank God people gave me a chance and looked through my faults, she says. I wanted to better myself for me and my child. www.insidebayarea.com/bayarealiving/ci_4056640

got this from snowbiz Fantasia balked at playing herself Associated Press PASADENA, Calif. - Fantasia Barrino had to be persuaded to play herself in a new television movie about the hardscrabble life of the "American Idol" winner. "Life Is Not a Fairy Tale," airing Aug. 19 on Lifetime, is inspired by the R&B singer's autobiography about dropping out of high school and becoming an unwed mother at 17. "I didn't think it was going to be tough going back playing myself, but it was because I had to relive those moments," Barrino told the Television Critics Association's summer meeting on Friday. "At the end, I began to cry and I said, `I went through all those things, but I know why I share my life.' I'm thankful that I was able to do it." A rape scene was particularly unnerving for Barrino, who initially told director Debbie Allen she wasn't going to do it. "She talked to me, and she helped me out a lot," Barrino said. "The good part about it is her son played the part. "He was so warm and funny. I said, `If you touch me, I'm going to punch you.' He goes, `I'm going to punch you back.' So it made it a whole lot easier for me." Barrino was the third season winner of "Idol" and released her debut album "Free Yourself" in 2004. www.bradenton.com/mld/bradenton/ent...nt/15047891.htm

Got this from matrella The Summer TV Tour: James Woods, Fantasia and A Wayans Brother It takes a lot for us hardened TV critics to be moved. But just about everyone in the room was touched by American Idol s Fantasia Barrino as she quietly talked about what it was like playing herself in Lifetime's upcoming movie, The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not A Fairy Tale. As clips of the film rolled, tears streamed down Fantasia's cherubic face. "I didn't think it was going to be tough going back and playing myself," she said quietly. "But it was because I had to relive those moments." One of those moments included getting raped as a teenager and becoming a mom at 16. But Fantasia doesn't regret putting her life story on the small screen because she hopes her tough upbringing will inspire others. "I went through all those things, but I knew I wanted to share my life," she said. The film is scheduled to air Aug. 19 at 9 p.m. www.palmbeachpost.com/blogs/content...ummer_tv_t.html

got this from myjais Ellen Gray in Hollywood Daily News TV critic BIG GIRLS DO CRY I'm not sure yet if this press tour's going to be remembered as the Trail of Tears, but so far we've seen Dan Rather, Shannon Doherty and now Fantasia Barrino cry. Call me a sap, but the clips for Lifetime's "The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale" had me tearing up a little, too, so when the lights came up just now and Fantasia herself was crying -- and director Debbie Allen patting her face -- it seemed totally understandable. OK, I'm a sap. www.pnionline.com/dnblog/ellengray/

got this from jiggy
TV Press Tour: Fantasia's tough new verse
02:55 PM CDT on Sunday, July 16, 2006
By ED BARK / The Dallas Morning News
A clip from her autobiographical movie is more than enough to bring Fantasia Barrino to tears while she squeezes director Debbie Allen's hand for support.
One scene shows her slapping an abusive boyfriend and then telling him, "That's what you get."
"That's what you get," he retorts, knocking her hard off a wall.
It's not an act, at least not in the usual sense. The 2004 American Idol champ is playing herself in Lifetime's The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale, which depicts her hard-knocks rise from unmarried teenage mother to national singing celebrity. It's based on last year's book of the same name.
"I went through different emotions," she said Friday after Ms. Allen dabbed at her face. "I didn't think it was going to be tough going back to play myself, but it was."
Lifetime will premiere the film Aug. 19. And since business is business, Ms. Barrino's second CD is due in stores "right before the movie drops," she said after an interview session.
Its tentative title is Young Girl, Old Soul.
"Get ready to rock," she said, " 'cause I'm acting cra-a-azed."
Her first CD, Free Yourself, had respectable sales and got four Grammy nominations. But Idol judge Simon Cowell recently said Ms. Barrino must make better song selections to catch up with Kelly Clarkson, who's arguably the hottest pop singer in the land. In his view, they're otherwise equally talented.
"I wouldn't say he's wrong," Ms. Barrino, 22, said, noting that her inaugural CD was rushed into production while she simultaneously toured with Idol's top 10 finishers.
"I didn't have enough time to give my input on what I wanted to do," she said. "It was like every song I was getting was about how I'm hurting and how I'm in pain. But now I have the opportunity to test the music I like. So that's what I want to do with this album. I want to do different types of music."
Her daughter, Zion, who turns 5 next month, already is showing signs of being a material girl.
"She's bad. She's starting to realize that Mommy has money. So she wakes up and says, 'I want to go shopping.' She loves clothes. But you've got to be wise with your money because you never know what might happen."
Her co-stars in the Lifetime movie include Loretta Devine as Ms. Barrino's grandma, Addie Collins; Viola Davis as her mother, Diane; and Kadeem Hardison as her father, JoJo.
The accomplished Ms. Devine, whose long list of credits includes Crash and Grey's Anatomy, is no fan of reality shows because they're "taking all our jobs." But she made an exception to phone in an American Idol vote for Ms. Barrino, whose Cinderella story inspired her.
"I think you're going to be amazed at the natural talent this child has" as an actor, Ms. Devine said.
The filmmakers purchased "very expensive" rights to about five minutes of American Idol clips, Ms. Allen said. Mercifully then, there'll be no Simon Cowell or Paula Abdul impersonators to react to the real-life Ms. Barrino's performances.
"I didn't even think I was going to make it to the top two," she said. "I wasn't the perfect person that they thought an American Idol should be. ... But they looked past my faults and they gave me a chance."

got this from myjais Fantasia's Life Is No Fairy Tale July 16, 2006 FANTASIA BARRINO's "American Idol" win took the 22-year-old North Carolinian's life from one of poverty to one of international success. Still, when asked to write her life story, which has been turned into a Lifetime Television movie, it was titled Life is Not a Fairy Tale, by way of revealing the hardships she had endured. Before the Grammy®-nominated singer won the hearts of the American public, she had little to look forward to. Her low self-esteem led her to drop out of school in her teens, she was raped and she later became a single mom at age 16 in a loveless relationship. But it was the birth of her daughter ZION that finally made her rethink her choices. So when the opportunity to audition for "American Idol" came along, she found the courage to go to the tryouts. "In spite of all of that I did in my past, now is my future," she recalls thinking during her days on "Idol." "I was trying to better myself for me and my child." Because of her less-than-squeaky-clean past, Fantasia felt that, despite the praise she received from the judges, she wouldn't win. She believed that an "Idol" had to be a perfect person. An "Idol" had to have a clean slate to be a role model. "I would tell my mom, 'I'm not going to win this, but I'm going to stay in it, and I'm going to fight to the end. And as far as I go, it's okay,'" she remembers. "So when RYAN SEACREST called my name, I jumped. I broke my shoes, my jewelry. Everything broke off from me, and I couldn't say anything.' I thank God that the people allowed me a chance." Those days are behind her, but even so, when she was asked to play herself in the TV movie based on the book, she initially turned it down. "Just going back to some of those times was tough," she comments. "The rape scene was really tough. I called DEBBIE ALLEN [who directed the film] and I said, 'I can't do it.' She talked to me, and she helped me out a lot. And the good part about it is her son played the part. And he came in, and he was so warm and funny. And I said, 'All right. If you touch me, I'm going to punch you.' He goes, 'I'm going to punch you back.' So it made it a whole lot easier for me." These days things are looking up for Fantasia. Her new album will drop in August around the same time as the Lifetime movie, and she says it is more a reflection of her true self than the first one. "With my first album, I was on the road on the 'Idol' tour, so I didn't have time to give my input as to what I wanted to do. The producers that I worked with always heard I was going through so many things, so every song I was getting was a song [that implied that] I was hurting, I was in pain. But this year, I have the opportunity to give my input. Being on 'Idol' showed me that I can do different types of music, so that is what I want to do on this album." "The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life is Not a Fairy Tale" airs in a special three-night premiere: Saturday, August 19 at 9 p.m.; Sunday, August 20 at 8 p.m. and Monday, August 21 at 9 p.m. on Lifetime Television. et.tv.yahoo.com/tv/15224/

The RCA Music Group apparently has decided the "American Idol" contestants are not finished with their competition. Nov. 14 has been set as the release date for debut albums of "AI5" winner Taylor Hicks, runner-up Katharine McPhee and the newest signing in the 19 Recordings fold, Kellie Pickler. The only one left out of the equation is Chris Daughtry, who has inked with 19 Recordings/RCA Records. His album, slated for the fourth quarter, has no firm release date. But before the pre-Thanksgiving rush of tyro Idols, there will be an onslaught of releases from "AI" vets. Clay Aiken's third album is due Sept. 19, Ruben Studdard's third CD bows Sept. 26 and Fantasia's soph effort is due Oct. 17. Joining the fray is the contestant who famously dropped out, Mario Vazquez from "AI4." His album, pushed back from the summer, is pegged for a Sept. 12 release date. www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=upsell_article&articleID=VR1117946947&categoryID=16&cs=1

got this from snow
Reading about the upcoming CD release dates for various American Idol alumni, I can't help but envision a batch of baby sea turtles hatching on the beach, then scrambling toward the ocean to avoid being devoured by a cadre of gulls, raccoons, and other predators. Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks (pictured, at right), runner-up Katharine McPhee (at left), and sixth-place finisher Kellie Pickler all have discs hitting stores Nov. 14, preceded by season 3 champ Fantasia Barrino (Oct. 17), season 2 victor Ruben Studdard (Sept. 26), season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken (Sept. 19), and season 4 dropout Mario Vazquez (Sept. 12). Sure, each of the seven has fans, but bottom line: Not all of 'em are gonna make it.
I'm going out on a limb and predicting the biggest sales for Fantasia (with Mr. Hicks close on her heels). Not only did her debut disc, Free Yourself, sell a very solid 1.7 million copies and launch a couple of killer singles in the title track and ''Truth Is,'' but it's a safe bet she'll be less under the thumb of the Idol machine for her followup. (Remember: Kelly Clarkson didn't hit her stride till her sophomore disc, either.) With collaborators like Aretha Franklin, Kanye West, Missy Elliot, and Ne-Yo already lined up, 'Tasia may well have the R&B version of Breakaway on her hands -- especially considering she's got one of the best instruments in the business. (Doubters, get converted by clicking here...that is, if you can handle it.)
As for the inevitable Idol flops, my money's on McPhee and Vazquez. The former isn't winning over any new fans with her illness-related absence from the current American Idol tour, and, well, readers of this blog know I've never been a fan of her voice, so why start now? Vazquez, meanwhile, already has his first single, ''Gallery,'' at radio (click here to listen), and as far as I'm concerned, it's a whiny mess. What happened to the funky dude whose vocals delighted on ''I Love Music'' and ''Do I Do''? (And what, no jaunty cap?)
Anyway, that's my take, but I know there's got to be some differing opinions in the PopWatch crowd -- and among Claymates as well (quick! alert Mr. Aiken's yahoogroup immediately!). So tell me, which Idol grads do you think will top the charts, and which will be relegated to the bargain bin? More importantly, why on earth do all these artists' respective labels think it's a good idea to release them on top of one another? And finally, should Clay trim those wayward locks of his, or is the shaggy k.d. lang look on the brink of a comeback?

I'm starting to think they went with the "Young Girl Old Soul" title - it keeps showing up. Also there's some rumor that Adam Levine is on it, but I think that's wrong. I also still wonder if Kanye's going to be on it. He was rumored to be on the last one too. He'd apparently done a remix of "I Believe" that was fire (which of course will never see the light of day). She's supposed to be on Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday.
